Smokey pay some respect to Broadway's biggest theatre star. She'll turn out a better performance than Bette and who knows what the sales will be - but if the first few months of Follies are any indication, and if Donna can keep the show treading water, then perhaps with Bernadette (who is one of the few theatre stars with genuine name recognition outside a small group of dedicated theatre fans) it will be just fine. It is a slow time of year though.
"You can't overrate Bernadette Peters. She is such a genius. There's a moment in "Too Many Mornings" and Bernadette doing 'I wore green the last time' - It's a voice that is just already given up - it is so sorrowful. Tragic. You can see from that moment the show is going to be headed into such dark territory and it hinges on this tiny throwaway moment of the voice." - Ben Brantley (2022)
"Bernadette's whole, stunning performance [as Rose in Gypsy] galvanized the actors capable of letting loose with her. Bernadette's Rose did take its rightful place, but too late, and unseen by too many who should have seen it" Arthur Laurents (2009)
"Sondheim's own favorite star performances? [Bernadette] Peters in ''Sunday in the Park,'' Lansbury in ''Sweeney Todd'' and ''obviously, Ethel was thrilling in 'Gypsy.'' Nytimes, 2000
I've heard Zaks has made some choices to add the additional songs from the Hello, Dolly! movie to this new production of Mame. I think it's a great choice, personally. Bernadette won't be Mame though, she's too subdued. Definitely the Vera type.
Bette's Turban said: "Could it be Dreamgirls will come into the Shubert?"
Even if Bernadette only manages to keep the show open 3 months (and considering she was able to keep Night Music running for 6 months, I think 3 months is easily doable with a show like Hello, Dolly!), that would leave Dreamgirls with virtually no time to load in, tech, and preview in time for the eligibility cut off for this season's Tonys. So if they really want to get in as part of the 2017-2018 season I would not put money on seeing Dreamgirls in the Shubert anytime soon.

Beetljuice has its tryout in the fall, though. So that timeline wouldn’t really work. Unless they got a limited engagement of a play in there before Beetljuice could start.
Moulin Rouge seems most likely, but on the other hand a fall opening conflicts with Karen’s appearance in Fun Home
edit: oh and I guess dreamgirls could work too, but then Casey would have to be opening The Prom and Dreamgirls Simultaneously. It will be interesting to see what show has its eye on the theatre.

Moulin Rogue in spring, dark in the fall? It’s way too big of a house for a play, and a musical the right size for the theatre wouldn’t be interested in a short fall run.
Also, there’s no reason to believe this, but maybe because Moulin Rogue wasn’t confirmed when Olivo took on the production of Fun Home, she’ll drop that production? Or she’ll do it in the interim.
"The Spectacle has, indeed, an emotional attraction of its own, but, of all the parts, it is the least artistic, and connected least with the art of poetry. For the power of Tragedy, we may be sure, is felt even apart from representation and actors. Besides, the production of spectacular effects depends more on the art of the stage machinist than on that of the poet."
