Rathnait, how do you get to go backstage at CURTAINS?
(only cause I'm seeing the show on Wednesday :) )

At Curtains, you whisper a code to the garbage can next to the stagedoor and it opens for you. It changes every week so you might have to ask Rath if it has changed yet, but last weeks was Demonk.

anna, yeah when we were taken on the stage of the august wilson my friend was practically hyperventalating (she's probably reading this, but its true, don't deny it!) I thought it was really cool as well.

Yeah, I'm not allowed to grant that kind of information, C.

everytime i go backstage at a show, famous people are there too. it seems if you are famous at all, you get to go meet the performers in their dressing rooms.

A couple spring breaks ago I was at the stage door of Hairspray and mentioned to Stephen DeRosa that I'd seen him perform in the tour of the show in Tucson and really enjoyed his performance. He then asked if I wanted to go backstage and tour the set etc. It was so nice of him; I got to see the outside of the star dressing room which is signed by all the great stars that used it. It was a really neat experience and Mr. DeRosa was really nice.

Cheers,

Christopher

I went backstage at Wicked. I'd been waiting at the door for Jennifer Laura Thompson before the show, and this stagehand kept coming in and out. Then he asked my mom and me why we were waiting, said she wouldn't be there for a half hour or so, and invited us back stage.

He showed us a bunch of the props and costumes they keep in the wings, described how a lot of the set changes worked, and let us walk out on stage, where we ran into Carole Shelley . . . which was really sweet. It was such a great experience. :)

I too will do anything to go backstage at certain shows. I'll be up in NYC this summer for a good chunk of time and I would adore to go backstage. As an aspiring actress, it would be a dream come true to stand on a Broadway stage!

Yup, several times. Usually at the request of one of the actors in the production, though I am also backstage whenever I am collecting for the BC/EFA fundraisers and have to pick up the materials.

Never at a Broadway theatre, but I got to hang out backstage at the Altar Boyz tour in San Francisco cause my good friend assisted the first ASM last summer. It was still totally awesome to get to see everything and hang out with the stage managers before the show.

I feel a little jaded. I don't find backstage, in terms of seeing how things work, all that exciting, mostly because as someone who has worked in theatre behind the scenes (design, tech directing, now writing) there's just no allure to being back there. Backstage reminds me of lots of work and very long hours. Having said that, I cannot lie. Broadway is Broadway and not the local community playhouse. I would love to go backstage to meet some of my favorite performers.

i got to go backstage at Dirty Rotten Scoundrels because i won a bidding war during BC/EFA money raising season. the show had JUST opened. John Lithgow wasnt getting as many bidders as he wouldve liked for his 3'x4' self drawn portrait of himself (hes also an artist/cartoonist). so he decided to up the anti to invite the winner to his dressing room to not only meet and greet "with a bottle of champagne!" but he would also draw a 3'x4' characature of the winner! My mom bid 700 dollars for me t have that wonderful experience! I got to take a bow on the stage, as the winner. The stage manager snatched me up, and gave me a backstage tour while John and the rest of the cast was changing. While i was checking everything out, Norbert Leo Butz was walking down the stairs, and he recognized me as the winner, and we had a few moments to chat. He said he had to leave to greet the stage door people. Finally John was ready, and I went up there and met his wife in his HUGE dressing room (aparently its the biggest in new york city). He talked to me about my college plans and such for an hour while fashioning the portrait, and my mom chatted with his wife. He was so kind and sweet. I told him how its my dream to be on broadway and he was kind enough to say "well one day maybe this will be your dressing room"! the portrait was finished and we said our goodbyes and he gave me a big bear hug!! i went down the stairs, and the stage manager told me to go out the stage door. the most incredible part was everyone cheered for me because they saw me carrying the huge poster sized portraits and recognized me as the winner. it was like a taste of being a broadway star haha. but even after over an HOUR Norbert was STILL out there... it had begun to rain, and norbert asked me if i was planning to walk to my hotel with the portraits in teh rain, and i said ya and then he offered me a ride in his car that picked him up. i politely told him it was only a couple blocks away, but damn i shouldve taken the ride! OH well. at least my portraits didnt get ruined! (it was getting them back on the plane ride home that was the trouble :) ). haha.

it was such an amazing experience i will never forget. DEFINITELY worth 700 bucks! haha.

I wrote to Michael Cavanaugh from Movin Out a few times and when I saw the show he was sick and I wrote him and asked him if he'd be back by the end of the week and he was able to, so I went back to see the show. I went to the stagedoor and said my name and he said my email addy name and then brought me and my mom backstage and then onto the stage. It was very cool and at the Richard Rogers there isn't much room in the back sides but the stage was pretty awesome. I even got a pic with Michael with the seats behind us. :)

A few friends and I got taken backstage by the doorman at Hairspray. We were just chatting with him while we were waiting; we told him we saw a few celebrities there that night and he asked us if we'd like to see his photos of all the celebrities he'd met while working there. So he brought us inside and showed us his photo album, then he asked if we'd like to see the stage! He showed us some of the sets and let us look inside the star dressing room (it was late so all the actors/crew were gone).

I also worked selling programs at one of the RENT tours when it came through my city. The merch manager knew I was a huge fan of the show, so one day between shows he took me back to see the stage. I knocked the door knocker like Mimi does before "Light My Candle," LOL.

Once when I saw Movin' Out i was talking to Scott Wise outside the theater before the show and I told him how Elizabeth Parkinson was my idol and i saw the show twice when she was on maternity leave, and he took me backstage and onstage where she was warming up to meet her. It was amazing! It would have been more amazing if i wasn't freaking out and could actually speak....

While waiting on the Spamalot rush line one frozen morning, a stage manager came out and asked me and my friend if we needed to use the bathroom. That got us not only backstage, but onstage as well, and a nice little tour of both.

I got to go backstage at Wicked. But that was because I won an auction. It cost me a pretty penny. It was still a cool experience, though. I got to watch a rehearsal where they were being taught the new "Dancing Through Life" choreography, see all the sets/wigs/costumes, and watch them paint Shoshana Bean green before the show. I wasn't supposed to, but I touched every prop, set or costume I could see.

i went backstage at the wedding singer a few times during its run because i came to know a few people in the cast. got the full tour of the place, even learned about some secrets about the theater, and realized first hand that the hirschfeld has possibly the smallest band pit ever. another time one of the cast members was nice enough to bring me and my lil sister back, it was her first broadway show too.

I was very fortunate to have gone backstage on different shows and concerts including cast parties (premier and closing). I thank the wonderful cast members some of which are dear friends and some of which recognized my name due to my support to the production. The parties are the best since I learned fun things that happened before, during, and after a performance. Cameron Mackintosh and Claude Michel are not divas at all. Nic Hytner was also very cordial.

A couple of the Chorus Line girls took me backstage because they remembered me from letters I had sent them and because I had made them gifts. They couldn't have been nicer. I got to take pictures in the "One" hats and onstage, and I talked to one of them for about 20 minutes in the quick change area, and she showed me around. It was soo nice of them and I'm basically never going to forget it.
