Best Marquee on Broadway

I vote Hairspray! I love the hairspray bottle spraying every few minutes! What an effect! Whats yours?

I say hairspray too! The POTO one is nice too, with the black street poles on top of the marquee. It is a nice way for people to enter into that spacific musical.

saddle show sidechick i was there yesterday and it wasnt spraying and i was there aug 29th and sept 2nd and sept 12th and it wasnt spraying...maybe when im on 52nd street it just stops i dont know

This isn't the actual marquee at the theater, but somewhere in the city there is a huge Hairspray sign on a building, anc each letter lights up individually. I think I have a picture of it.

Hairspray all the way. It's the sure sign that spectacle does overtake substance in this day and age. How do you think the shows been open so long?

Not sure if this thread is really about the best marquee, or the best show logo. Best marquee, though, without a doubt, is the Walter Kerr Theatre, with all of those moving colored lights. The pen and ink marquee at the Al Hirschfeld is cool, but the dipping the pen into the brain thing has always creeped me out a little.

I think Mistress is inside that can and fell alseep or somethin'. For all you new people, Mistress was this cool chick with multi-colored hair that left us for some reason, but she is always here in spirit!

The 45th side of the Imperial has a hideous marquee. I MEAN HIDEOUS. BILLY ELLIOT didn't look too bad on it since it was a white background, but the NICE WORK one looks terrible. The LES MIS one was really nice. That whole facade on 45th needs a facelift. So dull.

Why don't they use the 46th St entrance? The architecture of the Imperial has always puzzled me. Such a narrow lobby.

See, the Kerr to me is so unique, that I can't actually tell if I love or hate it. I just hold it kind of outside the realm of judgment; it's just the crazy Kerr marquee.

I personally love the Friedman's decor. MTC really made it look just beautiful; modern yet not brash. Dignified, sleek and cool.

And the Broadway, I kind of love the marquee itself, but no show I've seen there in a long time has fit it well. Maybe COLOR PURPLE was the last one to look good on it? I love the design of the marquee in general, but it is a bitch to design around.

As for individual shows right now, I think PIPPIN is making damn fine lemonade out of the Music Box's new video-marquee lemon. Patina's flyby every minute or so is utterly delightful, and hopefully other video billboards will make use of that kind of whimsy (looking at you, Aladdin.) MACBETH is a suitably creepy-as-all-get-out marquee, with Alan Cumming just mesmerizingly scary up there. Also the artwork for BREAKFAST AT TIFFANY'S is far and away the best part of that show. Talk about peaking too soon; the show peaks before you go inside the building!

I like a classy, well designed marquee. I thought Chaplin was great. They put the picture/logo on the top marquee and the words Chapin on the actual marquee. Same goes for Book of Mormon. I like that the logo is at the top - the doorbell - and the actual words are below. Very classy and well designed.

The Marquis is the worst. The new one just looks ugly. The silver and blue is just really...garish? And the older one is just fugly.
