yeah, disparaging extremely talented women as the butt of thoughtless, petty jokes typically doesn’t land.

wicked_beast4 if you have been following me at all I’ve been a huge supporter of Betsy throughout this entire thing. I’m by no means denouncing her talents and I don’t know where you are getting that from....

I think Jorge meant to say Wiesslers must have been desperate to have offered Betsy more money to keep her, since it's very unlike them to do that.
Jorge - with the chain of messages before yours, it really sounds like you implied that Carousel folks must have been really desperate to have hired Lindsay Mendez. That's why people are less than happy.

Yes, exactly this. Thank you for your level-headedness, Valentina3.

I thought it was pretty clear that the company line is the “concert engagements” story but the truth is they announced without finalizing her contract.
A friend reminded me about this the other day and now I'm curious whether you guys think Betsy would have at least been nominated for a Tony had she been cast as Carrie in Carousel. I know it's all subjective and all but it seems like the announcenement before finalizing her contract was unfortunate for Betsy (presuming she could have gotten a Tony nomination out of this role.) I recall in the fall people thought she was pregnant or that something else was happening as the reasons for her departure.
I feel she diplomatically chose to remove herself from this revival when she saw how it was being modified and altered. A somewhat “creative differences” so to speak. Many creatives do this (myself included) even after agreeing to a project that starts going into a direction not of one’s liking. Better to just leave the production than be miserable compromising one’s ideals.
It seems pretty clear she backed out to stay in Waitress and perform with Jason Mraz, which is basically the chance to perform to a sold out audience every night. His run coincided with a huge development lab for Carousel, which likely ended up with a mutual decision made on her behalf on on behalf of the producers. I doubt there were “creative differences” but you never know.
Regardless of why she wasn't able to continue with the production, this had to have been a very tough spring for Betsy, watching the actress who replaced her win pretty much every award possible for the role. (And on the flip side, what an amazing opportunity for Lindsay Mendez to win all the awards for a role that came as a surprise.) And the whole FROZEN thing on top of that doesn't help.
I’ll never forget seeing Lindsay’s Mendez and Betsy Wolfe perfrom Meadowlark together. My only were they incredible singing together, but they seemed like such dear friends. It must be so hard when the business and the roles get in the way of friendship.

Huh? Who are you to assume any of this affected their friendship? This happens countless times in their industry (your friend goes to an audition with you and they get cast and you don’t even get a callback).
I heard Betsy leaked that she was in it before it was announced, which forced them to make the announcement. Scott Rudin wasn’t too happy about that, and started to get a little hard on her, contractually... ultimately she decided to leave the project when she realized it wasn’t worth the headache when she could just do Waitress.
She would have won the Tony. But I don’t think she made the wrong choice. I’m happy for Lindsey too. Betsy will have her moment.
I've been hearing from a couple of seemingly reliable sources that it was none of the of the above, and that the reason for Carousel was also part of/ a similar reason for Frozen...make of that what you will. I also like to give the reminder that show PR will always spin positive or use some external reason. No show will want negative press, so they're certainly not going to give it.
