For those complaining about how much speculation is in this thread -- you're on a Broadway message board, this is how we have fun while procrastinating at work, leave us be!

She's been cast as a Bond girl in the next James Bond film and will be spending the next 15 months rehearsing her big line "Why are you in my bedroom, Mr. Bond?"
She will be representing the US in the next Winter Olympics in Ice Dancing's new companion sport, "Ice Singing".
Not widely known but as a struggling actress to make ends meet, she used to do hits for the Gambino crime family. She was caught and pled out to get 10 years parole. She violated it and now has to serve her sentence starting in January.
I've heard others but these seem to be the most plausible."
I AM CACKLING.
They/them.

I took that to be hyperbole. Maybe I was wrong. But I have a hard time picturing anyone literally hyperventilating over this.
For those of us who lived through BWW when Wicked opened, it's not hard to picture at all. We're in a post-Sanjaya America where Donald Trump has been elected President. Nothing is off the table.
NOTHING.

6) She could be a part of an upcoming Live TV musical event, possibly. Jesus Christ Superstar is the only one left, unless I'm forgetting something. They might be rehearsing come fall.
7) Re: Joshua Henry, workshop this fall, Jessie being in Steven Spielberg's next movie - it's possible that they moved Carousel workshop to LA/San Francisco and she couldn't get out of her Waitress contract.

Jesus Christ Superstar isn't until next Easter, but A Christmas Story airs on December 17. Maya Rudolph has been announced as Ralphie's mother, but the rest of the cast, including Ralphie's teacher, hasn't.
3) She is our Eliza Doolittle (potentially great choice)
What does "our" Eliza mean? We OWN her? She BELONGS to us? Precisely which creepy people constitute the "us" that defines "our"? It sounds very kidnappy and culty. I'd rather not be a part of it. Agreed? I AM NOT INVOLVED.
4) She's going back to Frozen (horrible choice)
"Horrible" choice?!?! A lead role of a guaranteed smash hit with the deepest pockets on Broadway that will most likely be 99.9% critic-proof? Yeah, that's every actor's nightmare. Job security and some financial stability is SO overrated. Icky-poo. A supporting role in another Broadway revival of a Rodgers & Hammerstein classic that's being workshopped for a new conceptualized production that most likely can only hope to run two years and struggle to recoup is favorable because it's artistically more admirable, musical theatre fans might have more respect for you (for whatever reason) and Audra won a Tony for the role once, so that makes it totally better.
Thumbs-up to everyone cast in Frozen. Your choice in accepting the roles gets my support and you've fairly earned my jealousy. Well done!
Horrible choice, my ass...

If she left for Frozen, I can't say that it's a good choice. In Carousel, she was a serious award contender and a Tony can do wonders for an already pretty healthy acting career. The actual longevity of the show doesn't matter, so long as the show doesn't close until that actor decides to leave. Frozen may be a smash, but what does it matter if she only plans on staying with the show for a year. Carousel will do well. It might not be a massive Hamilton/Bette Midler level of success, but it's a beloved show that will do well at the box office and will probably do well at the awards too. I can't say that Fozen will do too well with critics or awards. Therefore, it probably wouldn't be a fantastic career move.
Also, Frozen sucks. No disrespect to the performers, they're doing their best, but the show is garbage. The film was garbage too. It's just a very weak score and story, especially compared with the likes of Beauty and the Beast, The Lion King, and even Aladdin.
Firstly, if she was replacing in FROZEN, the announcement wouldn't have gone down like this. Disney would have coordinated with Rudin to allow Levy to finish the run in Denver, and then there would have been a press release announcing that another actress would be taking over the role for Broadway.
Secondly, Disney pays for sh*t so, nobody would be going to the Mouse it was a matter of making money.
In other response - hard to imagine she would be leaving CAROUSEL to do a small supporting role in A CHRISTMAS STORY. The only role she is right for in that anyway is the Mom and that casting has been announced.
I like the plausibility of a Netflix series like Damien Chazelle's or the Cinderella story of her coming in with MY FAIR LADY. What a trip that would be to have been cast (at one time or another) in three of the biggest roles of the season - along with playing the lead in one of the biggest shows of last.
At any rate, the short, sudden announcement probably was made because whatever OTHER project she might be doing is going to be announcing very soon. So, I think if we hold tight we will know something shortly.
Or she's pregnant.

I love how ya'll are going on and on about how she lost her big shot at winning a Tony award, while the rehearsals and possible developmental labs haven't even started yet and nobody (besides the people directly involved with the decision to cast her) has even seen her as Carrie and has no idea what she would've done with the role. Yes she is a very talented actor, but do we really have anything to base this "lost opportunity for a Tony" drama on? Don't get me wrong, I am upset that she has withdrawn from the revival, but stop making preconceived notions of what would or would not have been. :)
Has no one considered the possibility that the announcement is bullsh!t and she was fired? Because that seems more likely than the creepy speculation about her being pregnant.
The only scenario that makes any sense about her getting "fired" from CAROUSEL would be if they couldn't come to terms with her contract (i.e. she asked for more money than they were willing to pay) but I doubt she would have been announced in the first place unless those terms were (more or less) in place.
And what is creepy about having a baby? Or not wanting to officially announce the pregnancy until the second trimester? If it were true, she couldn't do the production at any rate, and they would have to announce a replacement almost immediately - perhaps before she was ready to announce her personal news.
As a pure matter of speculation, I don't find that a crazy scenario for an actress.

Uh well FWIW a source (who knew about Lauren Ambrose months ago) says that Betsy Wolfe was never actually contracted for Carousel, and she dropped out because of "too many conflicts with a TV show she's going to star in."
^ I don't know if your contact is actually legitimate or not, but a new television show is also what I heard (it was, in fact, unexpected). TV is never a sure thing but considering the difference in pay, she would be a fool to pass on a small screen opportunity...
