I came across this website with pictures of a 7th grade production of Thoroughly Modern Millie. I thought the rights to do this show were not allowed. I also think this was done before it closed. How did the theater get the rights to do the show...it doesn't even look like a professional company! The costumes are just wrong. Here is the pic link:
Millie Production Photos
They may have done it illegally. It happens all the time. It looks like a ****ty amateur production anyway so I don't think anyone will care.

But how did they get the Broadway sets and costumes?
Oh Amy,
You truly are a GENIUS!
Lol, the blonde Millie is really...ugh. It looks like a guy in drag in some pics. Geez, how did they find the pipes for someone to sing Gimme Gimme? Lol...
I don't know if it is true in this particular case, but I remember hearing at one point that if it's an educational theatre production, then rights are not always necessary. Again...this is a random statement I heard a very long time ago, so it's validity is not terribly accurate.

No microphones! Take that, Futon Sosster!
schools have to get the rights--at least mine did. They either used a vocal score book or possibly even the CD--and sang along with it!

And that's EXACTLY why there was a musician's strike last year.
I think the blonde IS a guy in drag. And Mrs. Meers looks like a gypsy. And Jimmy's so SHORT!
hahahah those pictures made me laugh. Two things are funny with it....one: a blonde millie? two: the (im guessing) bun foo and chin hoo are not asian. haha but what ever. I dont think middle schoolers shouldnt do TMM.
"It looks like every other school production of a musical."-undiscovered
i must protest that...my high school's shows were always far more involved than that (head mics, $40,000 sets, professional lighting designers) so its not really all just the crappy ones
Good point jonart, we're very big on theater at my high school
head mics, all our sets from Baystreet Theater, Baystreet Light designer, professional costumes. But of course this sad excuse is a middle school.
our theater director's husband does all the sets for Baystreet, so we're lucky there lol

even my towns middle school shows looked like that (then again they were performed in the high school theater)

Move over Juliana's Journal! Can you imagine the dirt this Millie could give us if we picked the lock on her diary!? Updated On: 7/19/04 at 08:06 PM
I love this. You just know that those kids were having a blast. I think that they look adorable. Bravo, kids !
Oh - be as cynical as you want. I wish I had seen it. It looked like those kids had a good time. Just like the one on B'way, I think I would have liked Mrs. Meers and her two assistants the best.
All I can say is, what a disgrace. They didn't even try. And I'm with jonart and aspiringguy: My high school was (and still is) dedicated to producing the highest quality shows possible. We would be laughed off the stage for doing something like this sad excuse for TMM.

Thank all of you for cheking out my Millie blog. As you can see by the pictures, I am Millie in the first national middle school tour. I'm so toootally excited! The audition was tough. After 6th period Croation World History, Mr. Pecklars called me and Nancy Fuglee down to his office for our final call backs. Luckly the cafeteria had cleared (Shepards's Pie..yuummm!) and we sang our final call back songs. Ms. Ugly, oh I mean Nancy, sang an aria from "La Bohem"..what a stupid choice! I mean, the show CLOSED a year ago..HELLOO! I sang a song that no one ever does and is very hard to find called "Shy" from..umm..."Rent"..i think.
Well, of course, Mr. Pecklars said I was the best right in front of Nancy Ugly (she wore lip gloss..what a slut!). Nancy cried and I knew my dream of becoming a star was just beginning.
I had a costume fitting and, as you can see from the pictures, we are using the costume designer from the Broadway production. It's all high class and verrry expen$ive! I met Jimmy today...what a hunk! We talked and learned that we share lots of thing in common: original cast recordings, Barbara Streisand, Bravo. It's gonna be cool...I'm gonna make him love me!
We start rehearsals on Thursday and open on Saturday at the rec center for wayward and middle class kids! I hope to put a smile on their face!
I'll write more as soon as I can! Luvs and kissies!!! XXOOOO

This looked like the quality of my middle school show. You realize once the rights are released every middle and high school is going to do this show.
i saw an elementary school version of wicked almost 2 months ago in NJ. had similar costumes and during scene changes they played the C.R. how odd? i guess b/c they listed the Bway company they thought it was legal? it didnt seem like it though...

From the Giving Credit Where It's Due Department: Your composition made me LOL Mr. Tuttle.
Millie had fencing in it?
I'm just curious if this was an Equity production or not.
