The last new musical she did was Shrek, almost 15 years ago. I'd have to imagine only doing revivals is a deliberate decision on her part."
I don’t blame her. It takes so long for new musicals to develop and even then it’s no sure thing it will work or come to NYC.
Remember the Sweet Charity she did Off Broadway that was rumored to transfer ?

Not exactly true. She's attached to multiple (at least 5-6) new projects and has participated in their early developmental stages. All of them remain "works in progress".

I thought it was cute, if not an elevation of thin material, at Encores, with a very good cast. I'll be interested to see how it is with more rehearsal time and if much work is done on the adaptation between now and then. The rumor on here ahead of Encores was that Baranski was attached as the Queen at but had to drop out. Wonder if they go back to her and try to make that work? She'd certainly be a boost to the box office.
Of note, Bruce Coughlin will be orchestrating. He wasn't involved at Encores but did do the 96 revival...so we can assume it won't have a 20+ piece orchestra like at City Center.

A shame the Sutton-led Sweet Charity never transferred.

So true. I still talk about that closet scene. She had me in stitches. That was Burnett-worthy.

Happy for those who are happy about this but I thought she wasn't really great at city center. The voice is not doing well these days and she's singing lower keys than Carol Burnett. I don't get this but good for everyone involved.

She had Covid during rehearsals and her voice was likely still recovering while she was doing the show. She'll probably sound better this time around.

That's an interesting way to put it. I thought she was the one who needed to put affairs in order?

Saw it at City Center, we love it! Bummed it’s only going to be on till the end of November. We will be back in mid January.

I thought she sounded good on all numbers except SHY at City Center. Felt like it sat right in her break. Maybe they'll find a better key or arrangement for her to really boom it out in a way that lands.
I hope Michael Urie and David Patrick Kelly move with it. They were the real MVPs for me.
Wonder if this will remain "concert-style" with the band on stage, or if it will be a more traditionally theatrical design.

I think Foster's voice lends itself better to revivals and doesn't sound as contemporary. Seeing her in The Wild Party it just didn't quite fit.

She was truly hilarious in that scene, but I thought the rest of that production was an extremely mixed bag and particularly lacking choreography with oomph and style. I’m not surprised it never transferred.

I think that SWEET CHARITY had a Leigh Silverman problem, not a Sutton problem. Makes you wonder how it could have fared with a different former collaborator like Kathleen Marshall, Casey Nicholaw, or Rob Ashford directing.
It also had a baffling "no brass in the orchestra" problem.

Hoping for Jelly too - I adored that production. With the same cast, pretty please broadway gods???"
Me too. I did hear that Barry & Fran expressed interest and are in talks with creatives for next year so maybe we will see it in '25

This should go well, considering that most of this seasons shows will most likely be closed by the time this opens.

Is it on Disney+? I can’t find it.

No. Appears to only be rentable: https://www.justwatch.com/us/movie/once-upon-a-mattress
There's also a 1972 made-for-TV version with Burnett on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-FqTnsLoReo

You seem to be talking in code. I can venture a guess but may I please have one more hint.
This transfer has been rumored for a while and even received a mention in The NY Times not too long ago. I will bet a dollar that Harriet Harris will do the transfer. I think a richer set design and some cutting would enhance the production.

Thought the show was fabulous and considering Sutton had Covid for half the week's rehearsal process, it was a miracle. I want more Amy Pallladino updates- her comedy made it all more relevant and funny. These new orchestrations are better than the ones used at Encores, so songs will be more fun and jazzier. This team has given us the gifts of Oliver and Into The Woods and this show has the same wit. Shout out for the physical comedy swim dance bit, and bed/pea sequence, and Girl Named Fred additions-so funny. The delicious chemistry between Urie, Foster and Harris are what it's all about. One of the most fun things to witness onstage is watching actors have fun with each other and play spontaneously. Urie and Foster have that in spades. Can't wait to see it again in August!!!! Sutton is a national treasure. So few can do what she does with such ease.

DramaTeach: I loved Nikki Renee Daniels in it (and basically in everything she does), so I hope she transfers.
