This is not life changing theatre, and never once does it ever try to take itself seriously - I think this is ultimately what makes the show a success. It leans into the camp and spectacle while allowing the two leading ladies to shine and do what they do best - make big jokes and sing big notes on a big Broadway set!
This is the most fun to be had on Broadway right now. It’s smart, silly, and FUN. And that’s just what I needed tonight."
I’m not typically a fan of movies turned into musicals, but this one is a riot. They’ve put together a ridiculous and ridiculously fun evening. The songs are revolutionary, but I laugh and laughed and managed to forget most of my anxieties. That’s saying something!
Saw the show today and laughed quite a bit but honestly for me the book is a lot better than the music.
I’m assuming the show is now frozen?
for those that seem to enjoy the wedding was sponsored by Skittles. Taste the rainbow. if you aren’t paying attention it is said very quickly and can be missed.
"I hope your Fanny is bigger than my Peter."
Mary Martin to Ezio Pinza opening night of Fanny.
Super funny. Good adaptation of the film with smart changes to make it work on stage.
I did another 3 show day today. I can't recommend doing that, especially if one of those shows is all the way down in the East Village & starts 20 minutes late. Any plans I had to grab a bite between shows were dashed. But I had very good fajitas after DBH a couple blocks away at a place called Sombrero. I thought Big Gay Jamboree was very good as well, despite starting late. The kids sitting beside me got day of tickets for $30. They hadn't heard of it, were just walking by, & thought "oh we can see a show!" For people like that I'm so happy at how well done & polished it is vs how some off-Bwy stuff can be.
Sorry for going on about that in the wrong thread.
I wish the score had a bit more of a consistently unique sound to it. That was the same issue I had with Mean Girls.
During Curtain Call, we get this crazy discoteque instrumental beat that sounds SO distinct and fun. As soon as it started playing I wished it was what the entire score sounded like.
The basic contemporary musical theatre-sounding song lineup in the show is definitely a fun listen, but … there isn’t really much of anything else to say about it? Fun the same way there are a couple fun songs in (again) Mean Girls, Beetlejuice, Doubtfire, Devil Wears Prada, but they don’t really do anything with the artistic medium that hasn’t already been done on 100 other similar projects.
Today's photo spread by Matthew Murphy certainly doesn't look appealing. And he's a darn good photographer. That, coupled with so many posts here that just comment on the "sponsor," sure ain't selling me on this. What's up with that ensemble? Looks the dancers from LEMPICKA weren't out of work for too long. I'm surprised more people on here haven't seen this given it opens on Thursday. Where's WhizzerMarvin when you need him? I guess I'll just have to get the scoop from the critics. Sigh.
Not to be rude but if a 5 seconds joke about a sponsered wedding is the thing that turns you off of a musical, you must be so fun at parties.
The musical is a lot of FUN. Meghan Hilty and Jennifer Simard are stellar on it, and Christopher Sieber as Ernest is really good at being the punching bag. Michelle Williams is the one who seems a bit unconfortable in the role as stated by previous posts, the show would benefit hugely with broadway star with a big stage presence in her place.
I don't agree with the comments about the songs being forgettable, they are great in my opinion, but i've listening to them since I first got an audio from Chicago so maybe is my familiarity with them speaking louder.
Anyway, if you want a fun night out with beautiful sets, a handsome and talented cast and good tunes, I recommend this show imenselly. I hope it opens to great reviews, sponsored by Grindr! PRR.

I’m no shill, just a 68-year-old former worker on Bway who gets his Bway fix twice a year now. This show was easily our 2nd place favorite of the 7 shows we saw last week (just behind the scrumptious MAYBE HAPPY ENDING). It shouldn’t work but somehow it does, landing joke after joke and gag after gag, giving you a complete party onstage for 2 1/2 hours. A brilliant addition to musical theater literature this ain’t. What it is is a campy shticky schlocky hoot and a holler that knows its target and lands it all night long.

It’s been mostly raves here with great grosses for a show that hasn’t even done a full 8 show week. My guess is because it’s not a bad show, we’re not seeing a lot of chatter here that usually accompanies train wrecks.
Anyone happen to know why Chris Herzberger suddenly exited his position as SVP of Universal Theatricals prior to the broadway transfer of Death Becomes Her?

Agreed...it's like, why do we have to hate everything entertaining? What are we supposed to be talking about here? How much we hate it and wondering how soon it will fail?
Is it The Light in the Piazza in terms of musicality and advancement of theater as a sophisticated art form? No. However, it is undeniably entertaining, and it knows EXACTLY what kind of show it is and embraces it wholeheartedly. It's one of a scant few shows I've seen that have been as successful at balancing numerous elements that could have gone so very wrong. Yet, it manages to work consistently. It does so without signaling any death knell for "true musical originality" or getting lumped into the mass of entries in the "We Shouldn't Have Adapated this Movie" category of bar trivia.
It will play terrifically on tour and, while on Broadway, will provide an exciting arena for stunt-casting recording artists who want to dip their toe into musical theater if/when Michelle Williams departs.
My wife has expressed interest in seeing this on our next visit (like in 5 month) because she liked Megan Hilty in Smash. That said, neither one of us liked the movie at all...in fact, I watched it a couple of months ago and really thought it was lousy.
What is the probability that someone who really disliked the movie would like this show, particularly given the sense i have that the music is mediocre.

Not very high. I loved the movie as a kid and still get a good laugh when I catch it on TV now and again. But this was a failed attempt at translation.
Despite the talent on stage, this show is just a bore. Both divas have their moments, usually in the book scenes, but the music is immediately forgettable. I think the show would have benefited being a straight play, especially with these two leads involved. So much wasted talent.
Maybe because I splurged on orchestra seats for this so was surrounded by others really into it, but at this past Saturday night's packed house it really felt like everyone was going wild for it. The jokes comes so fast & furious. Even Michelle Williams wasn't terrible. She just has trouble walking in the shoes they put her in, especially on the stairs that don't have a railing. How is that even legal? I guess building codes don't apply to stage sets?
But I guess if you think it won't be for you, just go see something else. There's plenty of other shows to see. Elf is playing right across the street. Maybe you will enjoy that.
