Well, I was one-half correct.
Congrats!

They’re aiming for the lowest viewership in history, I see…
YES! Thanks to the manic oversaturated WICKED press tour, I’ve come around and truly have fallen in love with her and blown away with everything she’s about. She’s owned up to her over-sharing social media ranting and in the future to just keeping things within her personal circle, I’m excited to see her holding court at the Tony Awards.

The last number of years have been a bore truly I don’t know that I’d even watch this year. After decades
AND the fifth ceremony in a row with an awesome woman of color as host!
Apparently they’ve already been floating Erivo hosting next year, too.
I mean, I guess?
Being a host necessitates a bit of big energy showmanship. I never really get any that energy from her. Would much rather have it been Ariana Grande, if we had to choose. Or Jonathan Bailey.

lol, by getting one of the stars of the biggest movie of the year? Ok. Wicked has grossed over $727 million worldwide and is a genuine smash. She's going to generate the Tonys biggest viewership since the days of NPH and Hugh Jackman.

It does seem a little like an odd fit because I don't get Award Show Host energy from her, but she is buzzy right now, so she's a good get for them.

Yes, because all those kids obsessed with Wicked are going to tune in to see Operation Mincemeat duke it out with Dead Outlaw just because Cynthia Erivo is hosting.
Of course musical theatre fans are going to watch. They were always going to watch, even if Kirk Cameron and J.D. Vance were co-hosting. But thinking the star or a movie musical, smash hit or not, is going to suddenly bring in new viewers is not realistic. Huge difference between "musical theatre star" and "star".

I would assume her involvement will guarantee an appearance from Ariana Grande, as well.

She was supposedly asked to cohost but declined. I’m with you on her making an appearance though.

Uh, yes. Any competent ad campaign for this WILL get those kids to watch because of Erivo. I don't know if you've been paying attention, but she long ago transitioned from "musical theater star" to a bona fide star. She is absolutely everywhere and her name means something now. I have no idea how she will actually do as host. We will find out on June 8. But to suggest this isn't one of THE biggest gets CBS could have possibly secured is ridiculous. I guarantee all involved are quite happy right now.
I've come back around on Erivo after the Great Comet debacle but I do wish it was both her and Ariana Grande. I'll bet they tried to get both.

Absolutely! I find her endlessly charming and fascinating to listen to. Whenever I see a new long-form interview with her on YouTube, I get excited, make some tea, and settle in.

I also guarantee they're quite happy right now. And that on June 9th when another year of poor ratings come in, they're going to still not be able to comprehend what they did wrong. I'm going to watch the Tony Awards. You're going to watch the Tony Awards. At least 90% of this board are going to watch the Tony Awards. We're irrelevant in terms of marketing the Tonys as are most fans who adored the Wicked film, because they were either going to watch anyway or still aren't going to. Cynthia attracts no other crowd besides the aforementioned. That's not to say she can't be good at it or that she shouldn't attract a larger crowd--but it's time to leave the bubble of "she's a global phenomenon" and realize "no, she's a phenomenon to us, but not to random viewer in North Dakota".
If she and Ariana do a Wicked medley... we would lose it.

Can you imagine, especially during a season when Idina could be nominated, plus Kristin making a promo appearance of the "coming to Broadway next season" variety? haha. Quartet, anyone?

With Redwood happening, I’d sooner expect a Cynthia/Idina moment. I’d love a Elphaba opening with all of the past versions ultimately leading to Erivo. With Versailles coming next year and Kristin surely a presenter, it could be another moment with all four women.
She's a Tony-award winning actress and two-time Oscar nominee who is the star of one of the biggest movies of the year and the most financially successful stage-to-screen adaptation of all time. She's an actual star now. Like...what are ya'll talking about??
Maybe she'll be great. Maybe she won't. Maybe lots of people will watch. Maybe they won't. But to this that this is a *bad* choice is...truly bonkers.
They'll definitely get an uptick in viewers this year with Erivo hosting and Grande (likely) making an appearance.
