They'll definitely get an uptick in viewers this year with Erivo hosting and Grande (likely) making an appearance.

And a new trailer for Wicked: For Good.
And a new trailer for Wicked: For Good.
This makes a perfect moment for Ariana and Cynthia to share the stage to introduce the trailer.

Maybe she'll be great. Maybe she won't. Maybe lots of people will watch. Maybe they won't. But to this that this is a *bad* choice is...truly bonkers."
Sure. Will make sure to check back on June 9th.

What should we check back on, exactly? It's the Tonys—no one really cares about them, aside from theater enthusiasts, and that hasn't changed in over a decade. Award ceremonies have lost their popularity, and network television is on its way out. Even Hugh Jackman couldn't save that sinking ship. As viewers, all we should care about is whether the ceremony is enjoyable!

Absolutely! I find her endlessly charming and fascinating to listen to. Whenever I see a new long-form interview with her on YouTube, I get excited, make some tea, and settle in."
We must be kindred spirits because I feel the same way. Except when I setttle in I pour myself a Vokda and Tonic with a twist of lime. :)

Nope. Won't make a dent. As we've continued to see year, after year, after year, it makes not one iota of difference who hosts. The people who were always going to watch will be watching --- and everyone else won't care.
It's cool, although I don't get high-energy, humorous hosting vibes from her. She always strikes me as having a very serious way about her.
But if she hosts and sings from Wicked that will be a win.
Granted, high energy and humorous are not her default settings, but she can definitely do it. She was a great Delores Van Cartier in Sister Act in the UK tour and she is nothing if not sincere.
One thing is for certain, it won't be De Bose level of cringe.
Every Tony Awards host will be doomed to fail until they hire new writers
Fully here for this, and it will absolutely bring in more viewers. This is a particularly star-studded year in general - look at that Hollywood a-list roster in plays. The comment about tuning in to watch Mincemeat and Outlaw duke it out made me laugh, but hopefully some people - especially young and still-discovering people - come for Cynthia and fall in love with the rest of it too.

Although she is undoubtedly talented in the roles she plays, I find her own personality to offer little of interest - and I’ve certainly not detected any humour. So I’ll be interested to see how she does when hosting.
Also, having followed her career for a long time, I previously found her (on social media, anyway) to often be abrasive and self-important. So I’m sceptical of this post-Wicked public persona.

Yeah, I hate to admit it but the Tony show during the writer’s strike was for me the one I enjoyed most over the past number of years.

This is a great choice on paper. And thankfully talentless DeBose is finally gone. Hopefully they can write Erivo a good opening number. But I do wish it was someone funny. Erivo is so self serious I can't imagine her being funny, but maybe she'll surprise us or they'll play to her other strengths.
So drinking game on how many costume changes she will have ?

Yes, she comes off as quite insufferable. The only way she will redeem herself is making jokes based on her and Ariana Grande's Wicked interviews that were so bad they became memes.

The fact that we had the same host the year pre-strike, during the strike, and post strike and during the strike was objectively her best hosting performance is pretty freaking damning.
I think people are really putting a lot more importance on the role of host for the Tonys than it merits. This is not an awards show that lives and dies by who's hosting.

Agreed.

Also Agree. Not her biggest fan but will still watch. I am not a Trevor Noah fan but I have watched the Grammy's. Viewership for the Grammy's dropped this year by 9%.
It's just a commercial for those already in love with musical theater. Looking forward to it.
It makes me imagine a scenario where Erivo does no musical numbers, has no schtick and cracks zero jokes. She's glamorous, dignified and serious, almost solemn, for the entire show. And the needle moves zero percent one way or another, neither gaining nor losing viewers for it.
At that point, what happens? If you suddenly don't have to be funny and gregarious to host the award show, does that ruin the show for the people at home? Or does it make everyone say "oh my god, all these years we were working our butts off for nothing?"
