I’m going back on Tuesday matinee to see if they’ve done any clean up

Posted: 3/13/20 at 12:42pmI've been listening to the audio b**tleg of the first preview from last night and the tuba solo in the finale is completely unnecessary.

I was surprised that the show was only 95 minutes. The evening just FLU by!!!

Posted: 3/13/20 at 2:11pmDude, act one was 95 minutes. I can’t believe you left before act two.

I still don't get why the sun had Trump's face in it. What was the symbolism? And I thought the rap number was totally out of left field, although Carmen Cusack is a surprisingly good beatboxer.

Part I was great. I can't wait for Part II to start performances. Weird that it's going to transition to a straight play though. Do you think it will be eligible for both best musical AND best play?
I'm also wondering, there was a technical glitch before the finale MegaMix that was supposed to incorporate hologram performances by the "real" people. Does anyone else have reports on how that comes across?
Flying Over Sunset - Previews Thread#57
Posted: 3/13/20 at 2:57pmThe technical glitch was because the TuPac estate sent a “cease and desist” letter during intermission so they had to pull it. I hear they’re replacing him with hologram Amy Winehouse starting tonight.

This thread has been very, very funny. I hope that when this all blows over we can look back and remember this. And I hope if anyone from Flying Over Sunset actually reads this they get a laugh too. Most of all, hoping this show will be able to eventually open in the future!

I literally had tears in my eyes when at the end of the curtain call the entire cast joined hands and stepped forward to sing "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds," dedicating it to John Lennon on the occasion of his 80th birthday seven months from now.

At first, I really didn't understand why they had to incorporate the flipper dance from Mamma Mia, but once the LSD hit me it made complete sense.

They're hurting their revival potential by offering a lifetime of "free flashbacks" with every ticket. I am looking forward to reliving my favorite numbers at random times in the future though. Really a value add for the show.

I think this is a really promising show but did anyone find the encore of "Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds" a bit ... cheap? After the soul-searching, searing musical that we just saw, having the cast break out into that song seemed like someone Moulin Rouge! would do. Very disappointed and I gave my feedback to James Lapine to cut the encore.

Posted: 3/13/20 at 6:34pmOk, so I guess I was the only person who saw the real crop-duster chasing Carey Grant? As I assume others would be discussing both the logistics and safety of this particular stage-effect... Too bad, because along with the twerking and nude scene, it was the highlight for me.

I mean I knew there was buzz going into this but I didn't actually expect that one ensemble member that was dressed as Buzz Lightyear. I mean she was in every number. Even the solo numbers, just.... just standing there. I just feel like she represents something but I am a little torn on what. What did you guys interpret her character to be a symbol of?

I can't believe Patti has the stamina to do the tuba solo after rushing over from the Jacobs! Certainly racing to win two Tonys this year.

Did anyone else think Robert Sella’s drum solo during Tony/Carmen nude scene was a little self indulgent? I thought the first minute of it was very well executed, but round the six minute mark, it felt sloppy.
Also, a hairy man playing Sophia Loren? Would not have expected it to work. Brave choice. Bravo to the creative team for taking that risk!

I thought the Mylar space suits and moon boots that the ushers were wearing were quite fashionable. And the masks with past production graphics were stunning.

The scene where Cary Grant is suddenly a giant phallic-shaped rocket-ship was particularly welcome to me, it really was the heart of the show.

Maybe this explains why Buzz Lightyear was there? Not sure about the symbolism....

Not sure where your seats were, but from mid-center orchestra it was clear that wasn’t a giant rocketship or Buzz Lightyear. Rather, it was a huge inflatable Baby Trump balloon flying into the sunset. I don’t get what that has to do with....oh...oh...oh...I get it now. Some symbolic foreshadowing to November perhaps and it gives the title of the show perfect meaning. Genius! Mark my words, this thing is gonna will both the Pulitzer and Nobel Prizes.
