Re: Jonathan Bailey and Ariana Grande in SITPWG?

For me, Ms. Grande isn't a loss here; Mr. Bailey was and remains the only draw, and I feel certain that they'll be able to find a suitable replacement for Dot if they choose to do so. However, I pray to the theatre gods that it won't be Cynthia Erivo.

I would love to see Eva Noblezada take on Sondheim for the first time. She and Bailey could be a pretty exciting pairing.

Please keep Ben Platt away from this.

Well I didn't want to get into it, but he's a Satanist. Every full moon he sacrifices 4 puppies to the Dark Lord and smears their blood on his paino. This should help you understand the score for Wicked a little bit more. Tazber's: Reply to Is Stephen Schwartz a Practicing Christian

Re: Jonathan Bailey and Ariana Grande in SITPWG?

I always wondered whether Jonathan Bailey & Ariana Grande were simply talking about Sondheim during filming of Wicked and then the idea to have this revival was born? Or was the pairing Marianne Elliott's idea?

This sounds like the perfect opportunity for P!nk and her daughter!

Bailey is still tagged on the musical’s Instagram profile.

I wonder who they’ll get as Louis the Baker.

Not to be cynical, but I would have eaten hay if this project would have actually happened with the two announced actors. I just feel a little foolish for spending $8500 on my orchestra ticket. I did not get it through the box office, so I am a little concerned.

Re: Jonathan Bailey and Ariana Grande in SITPWG?

I have no doubts this production will go ahead next summer as planned. Marianne, Empire Street and Jonathan Bailey were in development with this production for a year before Ariana became attached.

I keep seeing posts and articles referring to it as a West End production. I guess some people call all theatre in London “West End”, but it’s not, the Barbican is a state-funded arts venue in East London. They do crowd pleasing commercial shows as a hire venue but they also programme a lot of “challenging” productions. For example some of the productions I’ve seen in that auditorium include a 6-hour radical interpretation of three Shakespeare plays mashed together performed entirely in Dutch, an avant garde performance piece about the replica Chinese art market and the nature of the Real, and a Royal Shakespeare Company transfer.

This production was rumoured to have been developed with a Broadway transfer in mind and for that they’ll need names, but not for a run at the Barbican. I’m not even sure the Barbican could handle a celebrity has huge as Ariana Grande, they could barely handle David Tennant.

Must be a huge relief to everyone involved that AG made the decision to leave before tickets went on sale.

I kind of wonder how David Tennant would be as a hypothetical George (not that it'd ever happen)... vocally, he's very much like Elaine Stritch, or even "the thinking man's Pierce Brosnan." He sings with great snarling intensity and passion but very little melodic quality, but he's great at brief little tuneful snatches that don't need much sustain, and falling in and out of sprechstimme smoothly. You'd need a role with lots of character and an odd vocal range with as much sprechstimme as standard tonal singing, and George is kind of that.

My guess is that if he ever did it, it'd be one of those performances where if you saw it, you're blown away, but it doesn't at all translate to a cast recording, and people would argue him as a best/worst George for fifty years to come.

Re: Jonathan Bailey and Ariana Grande in SITPWG?

Tennant would be brilliant, but he's sort of aged out of it.

I want to see Micaela Diamond opposite Bailey.

Anyway, am I mistaken, or did people sign up for subscriptions to get early access to this? Are they refunding people who were only interested in Grande if that's the case?

A lot of people did, but I don't think they ever said this show was one eligible for early access

No replacement-casting speculation in this thread can top the announcement on another site that LAINIE KAZAN has been selected to replace Ari.

I know I'll be dismissed as a Lea fan and I don't think she'll ever uproot her young kids from NYC, but I would buy plane tix to London and a whole subscription for Lea and JGroff as leads.
