non-actress big-voiced Montego nobody Glover

What does Glover being a nobody have anything to do with this?

"If this is going to be a Christian nation that doesn't help the poor, either we have to pretend that Jesus was just as selfish as we are, or we've got to acknowledge that He commanded us to love the poor and serve the needy without condition and then admit that we just don't want to do it." -Stephen Colbert

CZJ has missed too many voter viewing performances this season. 9 I believe. There is much talk that she might have ruined her chance at a Tony this season. She is certainly deserving.

Montego Glover is going to be the win here, and I for one could not be happier. I have worked with this incredible woman and can honestly say that she is a star. I look forward to seeing her win her Tony on Sunday!

I have worked with this incredible woman and can honestly say that she is a star.

Montego Glover is not a star. Whatever you may think of her talents, she most certainly isn't a star.

The only star in that category is Catherine Zeta-Jones. Stars sell tickets. No one is buying a ticket to "that new Montego Glover musical."

This season is truly pathetic. It makes me sad that my three favorite performances in the actress category this season seem to have no chance at winning...I've been expecting CZJ to win for a while now even though I wasn't a huge fan of her in Night Music, but Montego Glover is the last person I would have predicted to win the Tony Award for Best Actress.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, I don't care how nice Glover is or that she's paid her dues. The award for Best Actress should go to the Best Actress. Get the politics out of the equation. Although who am I kidding? This is the Tonys, there are always politics involved.

Even with the "unscientific statistics", what would you all think if it ended up another tie? There hasn't been a tie for a little over 40 years, so I don't know. I have heard a lot of things about these two actresses and don't know what to think, but I haven't seen these shows. I am asking for opinions. haha.

"Montego Glover is not a star. Whatever you may think of her talents, she most certainly isn't a star."

The Times disagrees with you, adamgreer. A star is a hell of a lot more than someone who sells tickets.

Ms. Glover may not be a movie star, but she has become a Broadway star in 'Memphis.'

In the words of Terrence McNally, "I love writing, I love rehearsing, and I hate everything else about the theater."

Tonya Pinkins: Then we had a "Lot's Wife" last June that was my personal favorite. I'm still trying to get them to let me sing it at some performance where we get to sing an excerpt that's gone.
Tony Kushner: You can sing it at my funeral.

CZJ is a Hollywood star, and I agree with you, Hollywood stars sell tix. Montego is a Broadway Star.
I think they were both fantastic in their roles and they both deserve to win.
Yet, it is true that Montego worked alot harder for this role, and has been involved with the development of Memphis for years.
The Oscar-winner was probably lounging at her multi million dollar home with her grandfather...I mean, her husband, when she received a call from Sondheim and decided to make her Broadway debut.
Again, I am a fan of both, and we are supposed to judge the performance and not the details I just mentioned. Good luck to both ladies!

Montego Glover winning the award would be atrocious...

But hey, if Idina Menzel can win for WICKED, anything is possible.

I'd be happy is the Tony went to either Kate Baldwin, Christiane Noll, Sherie Rene Scott, or Catherine Zeta-Jones. Montego Glover's performance doesn't even come close.

And while my favorite female performance of the year is either Sherie Rene Scott or Catherine Zeta-Jones, the most technically perfect, flawless, shimmering performance was from Kate Baldwin.

Idina's performance and Montego's performance shouldn't even be mentioned in the same breath. Did Idina deserve the Tony? No. Tonya Pinkins did for her performance in CAROLINE, OR CHANGE (which for the record remains the single best stage performance I have ever seen).

But Idina was a HELL of a lot better in WICKED than Glover is in MEMPHIS. It's just too bad Idina's performance has gotten a bad rap mainly because of the crazy WICKED fangirls who still think it was the best thing since sliced bread.

I was gonna say, while Idina Menzel was hardly the best actress of the women in that category (one of the strongest years for lead actress in a musical in recent memory, you could make an argument for all nominees), she at least could act, not as well as the other women in the category, true, but she acted. I just think it's absurd that voters think that just because it's a musical category, they can completely forget about the acting part of the category Lead ACTRESS in a Musical. Though I get what Munk is saying, Idina Menzel was picked over the real genius actresses of the category: Tonya Pinkins, Donna Murphy, and to an extend Kristin Chenoweth; in the same way, this year Glover will probably be picked over people who could act circles around her, namely Catherine Zeta-Jones, Sherrie Rene Scott and Kate Baldwin.

"There hasn't been a tie for a little over 40 years"

Actually, there was a tie for Best Orchestrations last year. As uncommon as it is, it could happen. Catherine Zeta Jones and Montego Glover tied for the Drama Desk award.

Some of you are just too much. Montego Glover with two Broadway credits to her name is NOT a star. Where do you come up with these things? Even if she wins the Tony, I doubt she will become this big star that will be in demand for new shows. No one in that category elicited more star quality than CZJ. Sherie is a wonderful on stage personality and has a very special presence as well. Montego cannot compare to them. I thought at times she faded into the background, and plus it doesn't help that Kimball has the bigger and somewhat flashier role.

I think the blow of Idina Menzel's win in 2004 was softened a bit by the fact that Wicked lost Best Musical a few minutes later. If Glover AND Memphis win on Sunday, I will be disappointed. If Glover wins, but then Fela! takes Best Musical, that will help a litte . . only a little.

It DOES help, though, that he was cringe-inducingly horrendous. Glover was at least tolerable. She couldn't act but she wasn't making a complete idiot of herself like Kimball was at the performance I saw.

I agree with you about Baldwin's performance, munkustrap. Although I missed Christiane in Ragtime and havnt seen Sherie in Everyday Rapture yet, I feel that Kate Baldwin really does deserve the Tony over CZJ and Montego Glover. Glover and CZJ did nice jobs (I really dont agree with the bashing Glover is recieving on these threads, she gave a perfectly fine, serviceable performance, as did Zeta Jones), but Baldwin truly sparkled when I saw Finian's. Out of these three actresses, I feel she gave the most deserving performance. A shame her shot at the award is so low.

I'll take the wind and soar.

Although it appears damn near impossible, my fingers are still crossed for a surprise Kate Baldwin victory.

While, like others, I really don't think Glover deserves it, a tie with CZJ would be a nice way to soften the blow. Not to mention, it would be exciting!

I'm also pulling for Kate Baldwin although I know she has no chance. She and Finian's were magical and I can't stop listening to that album and her solo CD. Love her, and I too will keep my fingers crossed for and underdog victory.

Glover winning wont kill me... "Memphis" winning will make me lose all faith in the Broadway musical !

I am just thankful to have seen such great plays this year !

Would love to see Molina win... Denzel and Davis as well.

Henderson or Redmayne...

Amd would absolutely love it if Hill pulled an upset for "Superior Donuts" !

The only shame will be if Gina Gershon doesn't win.
