Another non-Jewish actor cast in a Jewish role. This may not make the headlines that the Funny Girl tour did but, especially in light of current events this is a misstep. Yes, other Jamies in the past haven't been Jewish but having Nick (when he doesn't call out) shout Shiksa on stage every night is a choice.
Maybe they should replace Nick Jonas with Ben Platt that would go down well here :p.
"You can't overrate Bernadette Peters. She is such a genius. There's a moment in "Too Many Mornings" and Bernadette doing 'I wore green the last time' - It's a voice that is just already given up - it is so sorrowful. Tragic. You can see from that moment the show is going to be headed into such dark territory and it hinges on this tiny throwaway moment of the voice." - Ben Brantley (2022)
"Bernadette's whole, stunning performance [as Rose in Gypsy] galvanized the actors capable of letting loose with her. Bernadette's Rose did take its rightful place, but too late, and unseen by too many who should have seen it" Arthur Laurents (2009)
"Sondheim's own favorite star performances? [Bernadette] Peters in ''Sunday in the Park,'' Lansbury in ''Sweeney Todd'' and ''obviously, Ethel was thrilling in 'Gypsy.'' Nytimes, 2000
thank you Jordan for the reminder to go back & listen to Jonathan/Samantha Barks on YouTube. I never got to see the original, but I did see Adam & Betsy in 2013 and it was so so special. I agree that this music could fit Nick's voice a lot better than Les Mis did. And Adrienne singing Still Hurting?? COME ON. This 2025 Best Actress in a Musical race has truly turned into one for the history books.
Warren will be fantastic. Jonas? Not so much. Big fan of his music, but I can’t imagine his voice on this score. I also echo taking some issue with him not being of the Jewish culture, since that’s a big part of Jamie’s character, plot, and material.

Josh Henry did a (one night?) concert. During The Schmuel Song the audience started laughing at his horrendous Yiddish accent and even he broke character and started laughing. We all understood this was a one time thing to hear those two amazing performers sing and act that show.
also the show is gonna make Jamie, a successful overnight sexy white male novelist look just so completely unlikable cause he’s telling a black actress to try harder in a racist entertainment industry with cards stacked against her.
dont know what the discourse is on twitter and dont care to, but this is the same story we have seen before:
OF COURSE Nick Jonas can/should play a Jewish character. But when other minorities are played by the "wrong" actor, the world implodes for some people. Its just a glaring double standard. Lets get rid of all of the drama, and let actors act, chips falling where they may.
whether Jonas can do that remains to be seen but happy to see him try.

I dunno, sounds like micro aggressions now.
Maybe that’s an angle they’re going for?
Maybe Jason is changing some lyrics?"
It's not a micro aggression. It's an aggression, regardless of race, full stop. And that's the point. Jamie is being awful to her in that moment, as couples sometimes are. This isn't some random coworker or stranger asking Cathy if she could maybe try harder; it's her husband cutting her in the way only those closest to us can.
I was about to ask if all nuance was dead, but this isn't even nuanced. It's willful ignorance
All the gay men who play straight romantic leads in musicals yet that's never mentioned. Yet if someone non Jewish plays Jewish and all hell breaks out. This world is ridiculous.
Namo i love u but we get it already....you don't like Madonna
