Was Stemp maybe an Equity trade? Doesn’t Rudin use a lot of American actors for Book of Mormon on the West End?

Just find it curious you'd go from West End star to Broadway...3rd lead. I'm not jealous. I've no dog in this fight. I don't care. Just find it interesting they'd spend all the $$ to bring him over.

Dollypop: Bravo. Over the years I have come to adore you nearly as much as I love my favorite show.

He just turned 24 and he's had 1 starring role. 18 months ago, he was an unknown. It's not like he's been a huge star for years. Maybe he didn't have anything lined up for the next 6 months, maybe he liked the role, maybe he's wanted to work on Broadway and a significant supporting role in a monster hit felt like a good move, maybe they made it worth his while, maybe he's dating someone in New York. Who knows? As far as why would they spend the money... Dolly is a cash cow. If they think he's a great option for the part, the cost to bring him over is a drop in the bucket.

I want to echo Whizzer’s comment that it’s great to see Bernadette having so much fun on stage. The role probably suits her natural talents and bubbly, bright, unique personality more so than any of her recent roles (as much as I loved them). And as much as I love Follies the audience seemed to be having a lot more fun (perhaps as you’d expect).. I hope this translates to good word of mouth and a sustained run.

"You can't overrate Bernadette Peters. She is such a genius. There's a moment in "Too Many Mornings" and Bernadette doing 'I wore green the last time' - It's a voice that is just already given up - it is so sorrowful. Tragic. You can see from that moment the show is going to be headed into such dark territory and it hinges on this tiny throwaway moment of the voice." - Ben Brantley (2022) "Bernadette's whole, stunning performance [as Rose in Gypsy] galvanized the actors capable of letting loose with her. Bernadette's Rose did take its rightful place, but too late, and unseen by too many who should have seen it" Arthur Laurents (2009) "Sondheim's own favorite star performances? Thanks to qolbinau and Whizzer for the first night reports. After such roles as Sally and Rose, who had some issues, I was hoping Bernadette could really enjoy herself on stage. She’s a terrific comedic actress.

Jennifer and Kate were the only two that signed. Charlie and Molly came out and walked away. The barricade came down with the announcement that no one else was coming out so there was no sighting of Bernadette, Victor or Gavin.

Really surprised Bernadette didn't sign. She's one of the best when it comes to the stage door.

It was her first public performance, give her a break.
Why does every thread need to turn into stage door commentary?

There is a positive review on ATC that is pretty consistent with the couple of thoughts posted here. I’ll copy and paste it given it will disappear in the future but can remain archived here:

Castro posts:

“Bernadette was greeted with boisterous applause upon her entrance and the audience clearly adored her throughout the evening. She was a very funny Dolly and looked like she was having a ball finally getting a crack at this iconic role. She flubbed a few lines, but surely after a few more performances she will gain confidence. Her standout numbers were the title song of course and So Long Dearie. I am confident that her scenes with Victor Garber will improve with time but they make a charming pair. Charlie Stemp was terrific and given a solo dance spot in Dancing that was thrilling. Once again impressed with Gavin Creel whose performance is pitch perfect. I don't ever remember Dolly being as funny as it was last night especially the hat shop scene which was brilliant. I don't think anyone that saw Bette Midler or Donna Murphy as I did will be sorry that they went back to see Bernadette.“

Plus, its nice seeing excellent seats at their regular box office price again.  The only time I paid regular price to see Bette in HELLO, DOLLY! was when I purchased my first preview performance tickets when they first went on sale months before the show opened.  My same seats were double price after the show started and the Bette madness began.

Hmmm... maybe I need to buy tickets NOW in case another price gaging happens with Bernadette's run?

Yes, I believe it does have rush tickets. Playbill also has discounts through March I believe. I got a side Orch seat (row G seat 18) for $140 with the Playbill discount. They also had Mezz for $110 and $140. I'm not sure what the non-discounted prices are.

Honestly, if I were her, I would not have signed either. There were hundreds of people in Shubert Alley. She had to have been exhausted. I did not think should would sign but thought I might catch a glimpse of her on such a triumphant night.

I suspect it's largely to do with winter (e.g., she came out in the summer for Follies performances but didn't for a winter Night Music performance). Additionally, after the few line flubs that I would not describe as minor (a line was even read off stage at one point; another line she actually stopped, re-positioned herself and repeated again), I can imagine that Bernadette would have been keen to rest up as soon as possible so she can get a good night's sleep and prepare for the next performance. Bernadette seems like a very hard worker and even though I bet she absolutely loved the audience response last night (one that I doubt she has had very often in her career - certainly not post-Gypsy) I can imagine her wanting to focus on the job and task at hand.

It’s also cold and flu season. I’m sure Bernadette loves and appreciates her fans, but that’s a boatload of germs to be exposed to while having to perform 8 shows a week.

Everyone calm down. Charlie is in the show because A) he is super talented and
b) His London agent is Scott Rudins long time best friend.

I suspect Cameron Mackintosh had a big hand in this..I’m pretty sure he will credit himself with Stemps success and probably arranged with Rudin to get him the part.

Bette stopped doing the stage door early on.  I was under the impression it was a security issue?

To be fair, Charlie came out, handed out a few cookies, then left. Official Bernadette Peters in Hello, Dolly! performances thread

Loved the electricity last night. These always are so special, and it's just wonderful to share in a moment that is sheer joy, respect and excitement -- there are so few of them!

These reports are so moving, mysteriously so. Maybe it's the world we're in. Maybe it's just the thrill of knowing that this wonderful entertainment can move forward with new players.  Reading of the standing O's during the same spots Midler earned them just warms the heart.  The show's new iteration, sustained with these three women putting a new stamp on the iconic role, is just gratifying. The American musical comedy: balm indeed.
