How about Sally Field? The writers could invent infinite variations of You Like Me, You Really Like Me. Or, if they want the whole world to watch, Meryl Streep.

That'd be great... Until she spent the first 15 minutes of the telecast doing the 'I'm such an old lady, I'm so tired' shtick. It got old in Vegas, it'll get old in Dolly. I hope she retires it.
4. No host announced before the show, with an opening number featuring a casting call for host, with "auditions" by various show biz folks that would continue throughout the show, finally announcing '"the host" at the end of the show. "
"Tony officials believe that’s impossible to top, so they’ve decided to go with a nonsinging, nondancing host."
"Tony officials might see if “La La Land” producer Marc Platt can corral Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone. Not only can they sing and dance, but they’d certainly draw viewers."
Which one is it, do they want a straight comedian or a song and dance person?
Benanti would be great. Her humor is off sometimes but I think she would nail the Tonys.
The year she walked on with the bottle of liquor was hystericsl. Even more so as I was at 54 Below the night after (or 2 nights). She was performing and walked onstage with the same bottle. I was on the floor.

They certainly wouldn't need to be in character to host. They both do some incredible stand-up work completely out of character. Hosting isn't that much of a stretch.
I would love to see Christine Baranski host. I'm not sure what her schedule is like for The Good Fight, but she's on a CBS show, and she's hilarious. I think she'd be a delight.

I would love to see Kroll and Mulaney host, so long as they're out of character. They hosted the Independent Spirit Awards this year and their opening bit was really good.
What about Kevin Kline? Sure, he hasn't hosted before, but he's currently on Broadway, he's a very well known name, and he was just in Beauty & the Beast, which was a huge success.
I don't see why it has to be a mainstream celebrity- the large majority of viewers are already big theatre fans, and would prefer a theatre celebrity like Audra or Chita (just throwing out names). Just because will ferrell or emma stone is hosting won't matter enough to make the average person tune in.
