She definitely does. She wouldn't be able to sing the role on Broadway 8 times a week, but she would definitely be able to do it on screen. Her singing in La La Land is NOT a good representation of her voice. Her voice is actually a bit similar in tone to Bernadette Peters.
As for Tom Hooper doing another musical, Les Mis received 3 Oscars, so I'm pretty sure that he would be more than able to direct another musical. He was able to test out what works and what doesn't on Les Mis. I'm sure that he realized that there needed to be some pre-recorded portions of the score. Some moments of live singing were effective, while some were horrendous. The Last Five Years is an example of a film that was extremely successful in mixing live singing and pre-recorded singing. I'm sure that he's also learned to back the f*cking camera up. I don't need to see the performer's vocal chords flapping in the wind.
Also, I can't imagine that a film would cause them to not release this cast album, so I wouldn't freak out too much.
Why would a movie "ruin" the trascendental experience you had watching the show? There's zero logic to that argument. I don't think the godawful A CHORUS LINE movie "ruined" the experience of those who saw the original Broadway production, nor did the poorly received NINE movie erased people's memory of the two gorgeous productions and cast recordings that preceded it.
A SUNDAY IN THE PARK WITH GEORGE film could be truly magnificent and Jake Gyllenhaal was born to play the part. I doubt any studio would shell out money for it, but I didn't think there would ever be a movie of THE LAST 5 YEARS.

its not going to ruin my experience, it going to ruin the show by not doing it justice...but agree to disagree
I think a Sunday film has the potential to be breathtaking. Yes, it's a quintessentially theatrical experience, but in the right hands, those closing-act numbers on screen could be unbelievably done.

Ahh, see, there's the rub. Please make sure to keep Rob Marshall faaaaaar away from this, if it ever does happen.
I remain a skeptic, but If they do the film, I really hope they make it a FILM rather than just keep the show basically intact, because it would not really work. I'd like to see a film that uses the scenes set in the 80s and interweaves them throughout George's story in the 1800s, so that it is about both George's creative processes at the same time rather than ONE story then ANOTHER story, which works flawlessly onstage but is always deadly in cinema.
Could the hold-up be because someone will not sign the release form? Stephen Sondheim? That's the only explanation I can come up with.
Sondheim likes his checks. I highly doubt he would hold up a recording of a revival that he was happy with.
The only way this would be shelved is because somebody involved was not happy with the results. And I doubt that is the case. Most delays are In someway fiscal- meaning either it's taken longer than expected to complete in post production, or the record label is strategizing the best time to release it for optimal sales.
A movie sale wouldn't have any bearing on the release of this recording.
It's a shame PS Classics is on hiatus and wasn't available to record this.

That doesn't make sense. There's no world in which a Broadway cast album would cannibalize sales for a movie musical.
Not the movie musical itself, but the soundtrack of that movie. Soundtrack/merch of properties bring a lot of money in and are a key strategy for ultimate profit.
If I saw 2 of the below, I'd most likely only buy one of them:
- SITPWG with Jake Gylenhaal 2017 Broadway Revival Cast Recording
- SITPWG with Jake Gylenhaal 2019 Movie Soundtrack
If this recording doesn't get released it surely would be the biggest casting recording non-release scandal of our time. Have they simply run out of money to pay for its production and distribution?

If that was the case - (running out of money) couldn't they just do a digital release?
It was produced by Warner Bros. I doubt it's a money issue.
Uh oh, scandal is brewing now. A OBCR without a release date hasn't been released before its imagined release date!
I think the release date is coming this week. I have a feeling it'll be September 22nd.
granted, it probably would be one of the cast recordings scandals behind something like Lestat not being released after being recorded or Shuffle Along not being recorded. i think it will be released but this wait with no info is a little obnoxious since they said it would be released "summer" which technically does end on the 21st.
It is 100% coming, but last I heard we were looking at ~October as Sondheim was overseeing post-production and wanted to make sure it is up to his standards. Not a money issue (the show did very well for a limited run)

This is encouraging, especially the Sondheim part. He's been busy with his recent NYC revivals and Follies in London, so it would make sense if the delay is due to his schedule.

I can see him being extra picky with this one's quality since it stands to sell very well and be a representation of the show for the future.

This is an excellent point. I can see this being accurate, especially with Jake's name attached to it. I will say, this company performed the definitive version of the Sunday act one finale, in my opinion. The vocals were simply overwhelming.
As long as its coming before 2018 - I am good!
Just watched interview with Jake on CBS. At the end of interview, he said that the cast recording will be out at the end of this THIS month!!!
