Yes, the authors of SIX are making tons of money, but their score is nothing special. The ASL score is much better. I'm glad ASL won Best Book and Best Musical. On the other hand, the show probably upsets white Broadway audiences and white folx in general.
Several plays nominated for Revival and Best will outlive the two winners.
The Sondheim tribute was moving. With what is going on in the country today, "Children Will Listen" is a powerful reminder.

I mean, Joaquina Kalukango really did THAT, right?
Also, Ariana on Garfield's lap.
And Company with the most awards of the night. GOOD NIGHT!
Not sure we all watched the same thing… but after the last two years, it was an utter joy to see incredible talent on the screen working their butts off. I loved every performance. I loved Ariana. Paradise Square was ICONIC. I was screaming.
What a beautiful night, thank god for theatre.

I've done some research, and it appears thatTwo Gentlemen of Verona, likeA Strange Loop, won only Best Musical and Best Book. I loved several shows this year, but I doubt any of them will have the staying power of the former show's competition. (Follies)"
How Follies won 7 Tonys, including all techs + score + direction + 1 acting but not Best Musical is beside me.

So for my most recent NYC trip, we had originally booked tickets for February 2021, with our ‘catalyst show’ (basically our ‘initial reason’ for our travels, that we build our travels around. So, this time it was The Music Man, mostly because my mom and I love Sutton, lol. Our trip this past April ended up with us seeing 12 shows in 8 days, and many of them were/included Tony noms, which has all been exciting and also been a fun throw-back to 2018 when we managed to see The Band’s Visit. But, like the Tonys, getting cut off. So THANK YOU!!!!
Just want to point out that the Myles and Joaquina wins come from voters who have seen every performance in their respective categories. Seeing an understudy would have prevented a voter from voting in a performance category.
Overall, a great evening IMO. A little too long, but I think that every year. Joaquina Kalukango's performance and win were the highlights of the night for me. I really wish I would have seen Paradise Square when I was in town last month (especially over The Music Man, Plaza Suite, or Funny Girl)...

Count me among those who thought Ariana’s hosting was awkward. She’s a little too green for this. Strongest when she was singing/dancing obviously. But thinking back, I also found most of her interviews on red carpets and acceptance speeches for WSS to be rather awkward as well.
Am I the only one that found Joaquina’s performance VERY strained and pitchy? It may have been what came off on TV, but some of it caused me to wince. And agree that song is not well written. AT ALL.
Jordan Catalano said: "Sarah Paulson actually agreed to wear that. In public. On television." Her dress looked like an onion. What was she thinking?
A Strange Loop will obviously get a boost in sales. Not sure about Paradise Square. Hopefully Company gets an uptick in sales.
Overall, no one number wowed me like in previous years. There's no juggernaut this season. I don't see any of these Tony winning shows having long runs.
Watching all of the performances online now to compare them to in person
I wholeheartedly think “intermission song” was a bad choice - I really really wish they would’ve done “inner white girl”.
Just like in person, I had no idea what was going on with Girl From.. (I’ve seen the show) and if I haven’t I would just be like “what’s going on”
I still disagree that people think the opening number was chaotic in sporadic. I think it translates very well on the televised version. It’s literally just mash ups and choreography. I will say Ariana has a very..unique.. singing voice.

This is exactly why I did not care for it as an opening number.
Generic in design, so many snippets it never builds, and very theme park or cruise ship in style.
While slickly performed those at the viewing party I attended found it immediately forgettable. But if it worked for many others, I'm happy to remain in the minority.
Based on the comments here I don’t think you’re in the minority lol. I think the lyrics are very catchy and I loved the inclusion of lesser know shows like Bring It On (where Ariana made her debut). I’ve been saying “this is your round of applause” all morning.
Side note - I was not at all satisfied with the “tribute” to understudies and swings. That felt like a last minute addition even it wasn’t. They should’ve recorded all of the nominees saying something about their swings/understudies or tell a story, and then played a pre-recorded feature on air.

Yeah it was shoehorned in. Even if it wasn’t, it came off as an afterthought/damage control. The way Kate Shindle positioned it in her statement, you’d have thought there’d have been a full production number.

I’m in this camp. This morning I’m wondering if the Tonys need a host at all?

I’ll never be over that."
I guess we will have to wait until the 2040 revival of Caroline, Or Change helmed by Cynthia Erivo for someone to actually win for this absolutely brilliant role. Sharon was robbed!!!!!!!
I agree. Does the Tony Awards need a host? Get a solid director to keep things moving and it can be done without a host doing their schtick. The Oscars have done it successfully. Ariana’s “I’m one of y’all” routine is getting exhausted and the writers of last night’s show need to shot. The embarrassing material they had her say, sing and do for her hosting schtick was beyond horrible. The “coming out into the audience” bit. Really?! I felt horrible for Sam Rockwell, who was a good sport.

We’re still saying people should be shot? Really? In jest or not, read the room.

Remember, Glenn Weiss (who directs the Tonys) IS the director & co-producer of the Oscars. And he had some fine hostless years at the Tonys.
I am of the belief that awards shows need a host. Even if they don’t do a ton beyond introducing the evening and covering up for any mishaps. DeBose seemed especially “involved” this year (prob because she wanted to be). It’s also an attempted way to unify the evening and have a spokesperson to do a round of press leading up to the show.
Understudies/swings had more than enough recognition tonight.
The sound quality is a constant, colossal problem with the Tonys. It has frequently been muddy and this year seemed worse than in the past. I don’t know what the solution is but it’s a problem.
I do wonder how all the inclusivity talk at the top of the show played out to the limited casual viewers who watched. Stuff like that can generally come across as terribly cloying and “look how diverse we are!”

I said the same thing last night. And can’t the presenters at least PRETEND to be neutral as they start to present the award?

Well Joaquina’s performance definitely helped with ticket sales-I just looked on Telecharge and tomorrows performance is very well sold. Not sold out, but very good!!
Tomorrow’s performance of strange loop is sold out!

I loved Danielle's reaction. It actually made me cry a little bit. Despite the fact that I was 100% thinking Sharon was gonna win, I thought that was a beautiful moment for the ladies

Sales for tomorrow aren't really indicative of anything at all. Most people can't pick up their lives and come to New York City to see a show this week.
