Possibly one of the worst Tony Awards shows I have seen in my life. Poor choices of performances for most shows, especially when Paradise Square looked like one of the best shows on Broadway. I had no idea what they were singing in the second half of ASL’s number. I am seeing it next week, I hope I can figure it out then. The MJ performance was repetitive and boring (I hated the show and the audience who was attending it when I saw it.) The host seemed ill at ease and I have no idea what the opening and closing number was. Say what you want and hate on him, but James Corden was at least entertaining and could sell an opening number. .

No. Coincidence or wishful thinking by the Tony producers when they were trying to create these "reunions" onstage. (Didn't Sutton Foster similarly present Gavin Creel's Tony to him?)
Can assure you the League/Wing do not have results in advance. The accountant who does the final tally is the only one with the results.
Company wins the night and I am overjoyed. Best show of the season IMO. Play or musical.
But I gotta say: from a TV perspective... Girl From the North Country and Paradise Square were the biggest successes. I was emotional from both. Thank you, black women!!
As for Ariana.... oof. Her charisma comes off as fake and I can't stand her use of accents. Please just talk. I digress.

Nobody needs to see an audience member WATCHING a performance. The odd cuts from one angle to another. Lordy! Please do not bring the same director back next year. It was very amateur hour. Simon Beale's speech was I thought the best. And let the In Memoriam be just that. It seemed secondary to Billy Porter's.....who I will say rocked the Bride of Frankenstein look...........performance with close ups! AGAIN with the closeups!"
The camera work is always so bad at the Tonys, and so is the audio. It's baffling. Tonight, besides the extreme closeups and the audience-level shots that blocked part of the view, there were also numerous shots with either other cameras in frame, or with shadows of wires/equipment on the faces of the presenters. Obviously it's live tv and things happen, but no other award show that I can think of has as many sloppy mistakes as the Tonys. The other thing that really jumped out to me is how much the camera work during the performances highlighted the size of the stage, and made some of the performances feel small and underwhelming. I know Radio City is huge, but there was a shot in the Six performance where the queens were relatively close together and the camera was behind them, but with a wide shot, so you saw the group of queens, a huge chunk of empty stage, and the dark barn of the house in the back of the shot. I just don't understand - especially since the performances are supposed to be selling tickets - how the camera work/audio is always so rough.
Ariana's schtick is certainly serving her well in show business, since she keeps booking jobs, but her public persona is so calculated that it makes me cringe, to the point where I easily believe the backstage horror stories I've read on here about her diva behavior.

This has been my feeling about DeBose for a while. She is a completely competent singer, and she can "sell" a song –– but I don't know that I'd ever want to hear an album or solo concert by her. But the same could be said of Chita and Hugh Jackman and other stars.

They don’t have the budget for the best people. This telecast is lucky they are still on a major network. Always the worst camera work. They are getting low hanging fruit in the production staff.

This has happened a ton in the past, where they try to pair up past co-stars with who they think will win. Sometimes it works (that same year as Gavin Creel, Patina Miller presented the Tony to Rachel Bay Jones). Other times it backfires (bringing out Sally Field to present Actor when Tom Hanks was the favorite, only to lose to Tracy Letts). But they try it quite often.
Erm. I feel bad saying this…but ASL just didn’t do it for me. I know not every show is for every person. And I respect the heck out of what they do. But…not my favorite. Congratulations to them for the win though!!!

Everyone wants a repeat of this Oscar moment from 1995: Steven Spielberg presents Best Director to his protege Robert Zemeckis by announcing "Alex, your father just won the Academy Award!" and then the start of RZ's speech is an ode to Spielberg.

Same here - seeing this week but my husband turned to me during that performance of ASL and said....seriously and then later - that won best musical over Six which he liked a lot. Glad you got a single ticket and that I'm not going! LOL

From the clicking around I did, you’d have to go back to RAISIN in 1974 for a Best Musical Tony-winner that had only one other win to it’s name.

Glenn Weiss directed tonight. Literally the best in the business.
I saw The Music Man Friday night and both Hugh and Sutton looked and sounded fantastic. That was NOT a representative performance of what I saw - other than the adorable kids - very weird…

He might have directed but he had crummy people working for him. Shoddy work. The production numbers were shot horribly.

I've done some research, and it appears that Two Gentlemen of Verona, like A Strange Loop, won only Best Musical and Best Book. I loved several shows this year, but I doubt any of them will have the staying power of the former show's competition. (Follies)
While I begrudgingly accept the fact that the 'technical' awards aren't given out during the main broadcast, why the hell was score not shown when book was? That's a huge success for SIX, and no one gets to see it. And they didn't even give us the 'what you missed during the ad breaks' recaps as a consolation prize.

I was thinking of going to see this but was very turned off by their number. Mare Winningham shouldn’t be singing Dylan. I get that it’s out of context but I don’t think that number helped the show sell tickets.
