I've done some research, and it appears thatTwo Gentlemen of Verona, likeA Strange Loop, won only Best Musical and Best Book. I loved several shows this year, but I doubt any of them will have the staying power of the former show's competition. (Follies)"

Maybe in the theatre. On TV it just seemed chaotic.
The only performances that came across well on TV were Six, Billy Crystal, Bernadette Peters, the reunion number from Spring Awakening, & maybe MJ. Company should have only done part of that number & then segued into parts of other numbers.

I do wonder if/how this will tour? Touring houses had patron problems with Spring Awakening back in the day. Oklahoma also caused tons of complaints, walkouts, refund fights and subscription cancellations.
I loved ASL but I wonder if touring promoters will want it so soon after the Oklahoma issues. This would be a hot button show for audiences.

From the clicking around I did, you’d have to go back to RAISIN in 1974 for a Best Musical Tony-winner that had only one other win to it’s name."
Thanks so much! I also found Two Gentlemen of Verona. Yours is more recent.
Yes! I saw the show Thursday night and it was fantastic! I haven’t laughed that hard in a long time. I thought it was a wonderful show and Billy is a damn treasure.

I have to agree. She had some very strange mannerisms while performing. After reading so many comments praising her for the last few years, I was rather shocked at how strange & off putting her performance was.
My quick thoughts: - Typically (though not always) I think the Tony Awards are very well produced and the camera work is good. The camera work in particular this year was weak.
- I'm just mostly underwhelmed by the nominated shows this year so it wasn't a surprise that many performances were "meh" to me. I thought The Music Man was uninspired, Company fell flat, Six was fine. I liked Girl From the North Country and Paradise Square (though I thought the audience reaction was a little over the top in that one). Billy Crystal was fun for Mr. Saturday Night. A Strange Loop and MJ are not for me.
- I thought Ariana DeBose had a good energy throughout. I was mixed on her material and delivery of it but I thought she kept a sometimes flat Tony telecast from ever getting too flat.
- I liked the simple yet sweet tribute to Sondheim.

I mean, it's a limited run closing on Sunday, so, I don't think they're too worried about ticket sales (for Broadway, at least--if you meant for the tour, then, I guess we'll have to wait and see).

Lol. It's been open for 7 months and it's doing amazing in sales. Zero protests and everyone loves it including the Broadway community.
I haven’t seen the show so I have no opinion on it, but it’s definitely not loved by everyone."
Then don't see it, your problem it solved. It's always weird to me that people complain about a show they have never or will never see. Do actual research (not just Lifetime!) and don't crap on people's joy of the show.
Congrats to MJ, Company, A Strange Loop, and Paradise Square, what a night!
"
How was what I said remotely complaining or crapping on others’ joy? I pointed out that you’re off on saying everyone loves it, as the show’s clearly gotten its share of criticism in addition to love. Acknowledging a show’s been critiqued isn’t an attack on it.
And it’s weird to me that you felt the need to get all upset and confrontational over a simple correction.
We know ratings will be bad, but will be interesting to see HOW bad (all-time low or slightly up from last year?), and how much of an impact the Tonys will have on the box office for this specific group of winners.
The 7pm hour preshow felt like a good experiment to see if it drew any substantial number of viewers. (My guess is it didn't.) Which means we're probably back to a not-streamed first hour of creative arts awards next year.
Will also be interesting to see what impact this has on COVID within companies. I know they had to test before attending tonight, but there's a lot of humans AND a lot of afterparties.
This thread has convinced me that a certain poster is now using yet another screen name (one of MANY I see they’ve created over the years). Curious why they’ve switched it up again now, but I think they’re currently using two, simultaneously.

A lot of subscription based touring Broadway Series invented a "Swap-a-Show" option the year Spring Awakening first went out on tour. Before that there was no such thing (in general). Cleveland even sent out notices about Spring Awakening and its content and explained that's why they came up with the Swap option. Thankfully, more and more touring series picked up and now most of them offer it to subscribers each year - the ability to swap out of 1 show.

That's a huge success for SIX, and no one gets to see it. And they didn't even give us the 'what you missed during the ad breaks' recaps as a consolation prize."
Omg... you're right. How did I miss that. They usually do a recap of what won among the tech awards on the main broadcast but looks like they are so invested into paramount+ that they didn't want to give it away for free. Six was the ONLY one that got any kind of mention when then name dropped Toby as the first nonbinary winner in history and again right before book, but neither was a real formal acknowledgement. None for ANY of the Act One winners.

Definitely a case of "out of context" hurting. Her mannerisms make perfect sense in the show due to what her character is going through, but without the build up of that knowledge it seemed weird and out of place. A shame as I thought hers was one of the best performances I've seen on Broadway in a long time.

Yes, very unfortunate choices were made in truncating her song. It didn’t build. It abruptly went into the uptempo section. Also she is rather shrouded in darkness in the first part of the song which doesn’t work for TV. Mare is offering a masterclass on the stage at the Belasco. It didn’t translate sadly. I hope the live capture gets a distributor soon.
They were trying to give both Mare and Jeannette exposure and it didn’t work overall. They should have just gone with Jeanettes song. They could have done I Want You or Forever Young and it might have been more successful.

Gotta say, while I think it was a mostly underwhelming evening, I think it was a pretty consistent show. While none of the shows truly wowed me, I don’t think any other of their performances were weak. I thought the best of the night was Spring Awakening, followed by Bernadette’s tribute to Sondheim. I don’t mind the simple approach, I think Steve wouldn’t have wanted anything too over the top.
The hosts were alright. Darren and Julianne didn’t have enough time to do much, but they were solid and inoffensive in their little material. Ariana’s material wasn’t very strong, but she was giving it her all and is a charismatic performer. I disagree that she comes off as fake, but I do think she was leaning too much into shtick tonight.
We'll never know, but would love to see those final vote tallies –– not just how many people voted, but how many votes separated a winner from a loser. I bet things were CLOSE in a lot of categories.

This point intrigues me quite a bit- I feel like Six and MJ could have split votes and caused ASL to win, although I am not complaining as I absolutely believe ASL should've won over Six.Likewise, best Actress may have been due to a split as well.
