I'm enjoying the show though as many others have noted, it would be better if they were honest about the fact that most of these women are working Broadway performers. I don't know that its fair to judge the caliber of talent based on the edits we're seeing. Most of these performers are way better than they were portrayed. But the pitch problems--dear lord. I was watching and my sister-in-law came into the room and said, "What's that sound???" Hopefully Seth can work his magic with a quickness because the pitch issues were tragic.
Based on her youtube performance, I can't believe they cut Libby when some of the other girls they kept couldn't A. stay on pitch and B. hold the last note
You can see all of their performances (including the 5 cut) at:
Oh man, I thought this was painful to watch from the very beginning. Talk about big-headed girls... I can't believe some of the things they said about themselves.
I think age is a big factor though. To be completely honest, some of these girls are too young to be playing Elle 8 times a week. It also has to be believable that she is going to law school and some of the girls are and look too young.
Some of the girls they chose sang the songs in the wrong key, like Bailey for example. And others the last note was just horrid.
I don't think I'll be watching this show on tv. Maybe I'll see it online, but it was painful.
And yes, Seth was awesome. Interesting choice of judges though. I'm sitting here watching the full auditions because they didn't show them as well as I would have liked. No one is quite impressing me yet though...
Two thoughts: (1) After seeing this show I feel even worse for Becky Gulsvig (who is AMAZING!) Yeah I know she got the tour but it's not the same. Originally, she was supposed to be the Elle standby and it got changed to u/s. Then they took away the part that she earned and arguably gave it to one of these girls? Screwed twice by one show! (2) Seriously is this really the best they could find?? I mean come on...
i loved celina and emma. going to watch it because of the legally blonde cast members which i hope includes chico or boo. most of them were tired in one day of work....they have to do the show 8 times a week. why did jerry decide to do the show?, anyways he had becky, or annaleigh to replace laura and the show will be in good hands. i agree not impressed by the last note in so much better by alot of them. paul loving one of the girls hair but he is so incredible.
Pretty much agree with a lot of the other postings here. The girls.. and the show... are a bit full of themselves.
1. Jerry Mitchell.. a 'legendary' director? Umm.. yeah right. I think 'legendary' would require directing more than ONE Broadway show.
2. Haylie Duff a triple threat? Again.. ummm.. yeah right. How does she get to be the big 'Broadway mentor' anyway? Half of these girls could probably outsing HER. And did anyone else want to scream at their television when they kept saying she 'STARRED in HAIRSPRAY?!' The part of Amber Von Tussle is one of that show's primary characters, but I definitely wouldn't say it's a STARRING ROLE. That's an insult to Hairspray and everything it stands for.
3. "So Much Better" the most powerful ballad/song that's the toughest to sing on Broadway? Umm.. yeah right. Demanding? Yes. The "most" anything? I don't think so.
Does anyone know if Legally Blonde has even recouped yet?
I predict that it will come down to Bailey, Lauren, and Rhiannon. Not saying i like them more, just my prediction.
Don't know how I really feel about any of the girls (they're all kind of meh) but most of the best singers just aren't right for the role. Those three have the quality for the role and at least one of them, as of now, can really sing the song.
to be honest, i'm surprised these girls aren't better singers. They're all very strained in their tone and almost consistently flat. With all the professional experience a lot of these girls have had, especially the one Emma Zaks, i wonder if they were told to suck on purpose?
Welcome to the theater girls- you will be surrounded by homosexuals who really want to play your part, and would perform it better than you-like the chorus boy/judge. Your hometown folks will be shocked when you change from small town conservative gals to fag hags. You will also pick up many Yiddish expressions and they will say-"huh?" Jerry Mitchell is the new Tim Gunn of reality TV- very sweet as he is in real life- surprised he didn't say "make it work" to them before he exited. The lyricist is the new Kathleen Marshall- no charisma, glamour-couldn't someone have combed her hair.....yes it was 37 Arts- bankrupt- and the show will close a few weeks after she starts. Totally phony show- but I am hooked.
It probably makes for better television, but it seems like the audition was reversed. After determining who can do basic choreography, I'd want to find out who my singers were. I think it would be easier to train the next Elle to dance, than to sing "the most difficult song on Broadway" (cough cough). Even Mitchell says, as he leaves because he can't stand it, that he expects the best dancers won't sing and the best singers can't dance. To me, the cut from 50 to 15 was wrong from a casting point of view. Unless, each of the 50 got to do their 16 bars, and we just didn't see it.
And yes, Rachel should have made the top 10.
Lastly, perhaps the final 10 weren't cast so much as Elle, but were cast for the television show. There was a casting director as a judge, after all, and after Mitchell says he's going to pick the next Elle, he tells his casting director "you know what I want" and leaves. Casting for television could explain some of the choices for who made the Top 10 and why Rachel did not.
Guys, I'm serious: Stop. Force yourself to just....stop.
You lose 1 IQ point for every minute you watch this drivel. Stop now! REPENT!!!!

I hated how they sugar coated Haylie's short stint on Broadway. Did she even go through the rigorous audition process? She's not a Broadway Star; she's just your average celebrity (if you would even say that) who got cast because of her name and because she was in the right place at the right time. Broadway STARS are people like Patti LuPone, Sutton Foster, Kelli O'Hara, Bernadette Peters, Harvey Fierstein, and Norbert Leo Butz, to randomly name a few.

Kelli O'Hara, Sutton Foster, and Patti LuPone don't sell to the MTV audience. Of course they're going to sugar coat everything - that's what the writers do. Haylie Duff is also a producer on the show.
In terms of all the introductions, there are 2 they got right. Jerry Mitchell is a legend - he's worked his way up through the biz and has deserved every award he's received - and Bernie Telsey is the biggest casting director in the biz.
What they "judges" have to keep in mind is how, beyond how good or bad the contestants sing or dance, is how old they read from the stage. If the young ones read too young opposite Christian Borle (who I assume is sticking with the show?), it'll look more like "To Catch a Predator" than "Legally Blonde."
Did anyone else notice Haylie Duff's Executive Producer credit? That might explain the frequent, often forced references to her Broadway debut. Nothing like self-promotion, even for such a talented triple threat as Ms. Duff, who singlehandedly carried that clunker of a show Hairspray. *cough*
All you folks are doing is giving yourself reasons to not buy into this corporate bullsh*t. SO WHY ARE YOU??

I missed the show last night because I went out, but from watching the videos on the website, I liked Autumn and... that's about it.

I chose, and my world was shaken- So what? The choice may have been mistaken,
The choosing was not...

seth is obnoxious. everytime he opened his mouth he tried to spit out "witty" quips, but it was always a clunker.
if anyone has seen the video of becky gulsvig performing so much better at some concert thing when legally blonde was closed from the strike, he was obnoxious and failed at being funny there, too.
