"Emcee, the script follows the libretto and takes out all of the horrible diaglogue from draft one and yet is still Very Filmic, using great devices while songs are sung that i think Rent fans will love, and let me emphasize once again, nothing homophobic."
I don't want to belabor this issue too much longer because I can sense that you're a bit miffed that we disagree on the value of one screenplay as compared to another. But since this is a thread devoted to asking a person who works in the film and theater industries questions about work in which he is or has been involved, what would you say if I were to tell you that Steve Chbosky has also been reading this thread? I'm sure his feelings are just as his hurt by the way in which his dialogue is dismissed as "horrible" (sans explanation) as Rapp is by concerns over his age, the quality of Columbus's writing, etc.
As far as using "great devices while songs are sung" goes, I'm not understanding why you find that Columbus's devices so much more innovative than Chbosky's... care to explain via PM? You have to at least admit that several of those "great devices" were invented by Chbosky and that the "horrible" dialogue in Chbosky's screenplay is only moderately altered in several parts of Columbus's screenplay.
I sincerely apologize if you felt I was dismissive to your argument. You mistook my tone; I was (and remain) genuinely flabbergasted that you would find the material homophobic, and I asked you why you found it so. As I said, I disagree with your assessment, but I am interested in hearing what you have to say about the matter. I don't consider that dismissive, but I am sorry that it seemed that way to you.
I am not asking you not to take any exceptions to the work we're doing; but I am asking you to have some faith that we're not going to screw it up.
One thing that I'm struck by in reading the CB boards (I went there after posting here) is that it seems like there are people who have big problems with the show in the first place, and are hoping that the film will improve on those problems.
I'm also reminded by my initial reaction to the show itself when my agent first told me about my audition for the Studio production: I was highly skeptical that anything calling itself a "rock opera," let alone one featuring drag queens, HIV-positive S&M dancers, and documentary filmmakers could ever feel authentic and important, and yet, it worked. But believe me when I say that a big part of the reason why it worked was from the intensity and passion and integrity that Michael Greif and Tim Weil and the cast brought to the task of bringing Jonathan's vision to life. I think I've said so before, but in my meeting with Chris Columbus I was very very very impressed by the clarity of his purpose and by the intensity of his desire to make a film that would measure up to the experience that the show has brought to so very many people around the world.
Again, it all remains to be seen as to whether or not he and we will be successful at that, but I know we will bring our all to it.
I want to say again: *please* continue to dissent and discuss and express your thoughts. But please also understand that if I disagree I'm not dismissing your right to have your opinions or to express them.
There is a small group of elitists on the CB board, but most of us are decent. But it is true. If theres something to argue over, it gets argued. Sometimes, its an intelligent argument, I cant deny that. And sometimes, it's a bunch of bull. There is a curent thred that Evelyn - Wonka has been very animated in, and rarely can I find a point that makes sense.
She needs to realize that she is not talking to some other poster on the Broadway board needs to learn some respect to those who are older than her one and know what they hell they are doing. THEY are in the movie, and I think that they would understand their own characters they THEY created.
And what I would LOVE to know. If all of us over here on the Broadway Board are cry babies, why waste your time defending yourself?

It's true that many people there (and elsewhere ,really) think that there were problems with the show in the first place. While I haven't participated in that discussion, I can tell you that the biggest concern about the stage production is that it can be overwhelming for someone seeing it for the first time. Today4U, for instance, is such a fast-paced song that the story about killing Benny's dog goes right over a lot of spectators' heads. I was enamored by the show when I first saw it, but I'd be lying if I said that the first question I asked myself as I left the theater wasn't, "Who had HIV and who didn't?" (sometimes the most important lines were the ones that the orchestra muted)
EDIT: Come to think of it I did have a few follow up responses to criticisms of the stage production, but as for separate threads devoted to those criticisms... I don't remember contributing to them. I tend to be more concerned with works in progress than done deals.

Just my 2 cents, but I dont know if you can really compare this Rent project to Mrs.Doubtfire. They are different styles, different genres and very different in alot of ways. About the only thing they have in common is the director and I'm not sure you can assume his treatment of characters in this project from his choices in another...just my opinion though
"Commit a little mortal sin, its good for the soul"
I would personally like to say thank you to Anthony for taking time out of his busy schedule to keep us posted on the progress of the RENT movie. I'm very excited to see the original cast reprise the roles that they made famous. I know it's one thing I've always wanted to see. When I found out about this whole thing it seriously made my week, even more to know that the OBC was going to be in it. So everyone should think of Anthony posting here as a priveledge, as well as the making of the movie. And PLEASE stop whining about the OBC being in the movie because you think they are too old, they apparently can still pull it off if they're in the movie, dont you think? So thank you Anthony for everything you are doing!
Whiteboy Spice: "One thing that I'm struck by in reading the CB boards (I went there after posting here) is that it seems like there are people who have big problems with the show in the first place, and are hoping that the film will improve on those problems."
I politely digress. I feel it's actually the exact opposite on CB. People are so invested in the stage show that they don't want the film to lose the message. Many people are very open to the film. The only ones that seem to post in the Rent Movie forum are the ones that are concerned with the way Rent will transfer from stage to screen. They must remember that eveything's still changing, including the script.
The only real problems people usually have with the show itself are issues dealing with casting, which are prevalent with any show. I never got the feeling that people over at CB are hoping the film will improve upon anything. They just seem to be hesitantly hopeful about the way it will turn out. We all still love Rent very much and continue to support it whether on Broadway or on Tour.
EvelynNesbit1906 - I haven't read and don't plan on reading Columbus's script, but I take mild offense to the fact that you seem to be saying you have some sort of overdeveloped gaydar that can detect homophobia where others cannot. And that Anthony would overlook something like that because he's enthusiastic about getting to reprise the role he created on the big screen. Also, it comes off like you're saying if we're not gay we can't discuss it because we just wouldn't understand. Is it possible you're just reading too much into it?
Anthony, thanks. I hope that reading CB didn't bother you too much. No matter who's cast, they aren't going to be happy. I for one am thrilled about the OBC, but a lot of CBers have (unexplained) issues with them.
As for all the doubt- I'm very, very glad to hear that you, someone who's been involved since the beggining, is pleased with the adaption thus far. I don't think a lot of us mean to insult your judgement when we express our concerns, it's just that we are very attached to the show. It may turn out great, but none of us are going to assume so.
I don't care if Daphne is even 50 years old, she deserves to play Mimi in the Rent movie. Seriously folks, she IS MiMi. I know she's preggers and all, but she could get back in those pants by March. Come on!!! Just look at this pic of Adam and her (which wasn't THAT long ago, she could pull it off no problem). I think it's a sad state of affairs that she's not currently cast. I say we get a petition going. It's NOT right.

its too funny how change-of-the-subjects these threads get lol, not saying Im complainig however, its nice to see everyone's attitude on the subject, but I highly doubt that Anthony or any of the cast members of RENT would particpate in a homophobic film, but anyway...
I totally agree about Daphne!!!! I WANT HER IN THE MOVIE! lol I hope Rosario Dawson is good though, I heard shes not
oh darn there i go chanign subjects ok ill shut up now
"It's a great feeling of power to be naked in front of people. We're happy to watch actual incredible graphic violence and gore, but as soon as somebody's naked it seems like the public goes a bit bananas about the whole thing."
"I for one am thrilled about the OBC, but a lot of CBers have (unexplained) issues with them."
My eyes must be playing tricks on me. There seem to be dozens of posts on CB explaining that these are the issues with the casting:
1) Some posters are convinced that members of the OBC (particularly Adam Pascal, it seems) did not prove themselves as *actors* over the last eight years. 2) Others are concerned that the talents of these performers, who have generally only played leading roles on the stage, will not translate well to the screen. 3) Still more are worried that the break from casting people in their early to mid 20s will mitigate Rent's significance as a work about people facing death long, long before they've figured out what it means to live (or at least how to have stable careers).
The people on Compulsivebowlers are not making mindless criticisms of this film or anything else. I can't speak for myself, but the majority of other posts that I've read there are pretty damn thoughtful even if they disaffect those readers who think it's more important to consider that celebrities might be reading the board than to engage in honest discussion. (read: "How dare you say that Constantine spoke his lines in 'Another Day' instead of singing them! HE READS THIS BOARD and I'm sure he would be very offended by what you said!")

Paulie, I wanted to see Daphne in the film as much as anyone; I'm still disappointed about her absence. But Rosario was cast already, has signed a contract, and nothing can change that. So it's best to move on and accept the fact that Rosario is Mimi. I personally am loving this idea the more I think about it; if I can't have Daphne, I'll definitely settle for Rosario. Give her a chance. eta: P.S. I LOVE that picture of them, they're so cute!

Evelyn, I wasn't thanking Anthony cos I was hoping it would shut you up. Thats going a bit too far, and rhyming dialogue as long as their is music backing up the rhyming dialogue it should work. And the horrible dialogue i referred to emcee was the god awful cbgb's opening scene, the horrible dialogue in the pawn shop and the surprise party for Roger. Please PM me what you think is homophobic in Columbus' Rent script. I'm very curious to know and would love to get into an intellectual conversation about it, im gay, not that it should matter cos I think homophobia should be discussed by straight-bi-gay-lesbian or whatever you consider yourself to be, and im very involved in my community. Still haven't said why Coloumbus' script is homophobic, I asked you to PM it to me if you didnt want to get the thread involved, but so far all you've done is left long post with no one shred of evidence to back up your points. And your dislike of Out Tonight, is from the Chobsky script that made it to the Columbus script.

Over the course of the day today, I've read through La Vie Boheme, and I'm not seeing the homophobic area. Yes, it does seem that the Angel/Collins storyline is demoted (so far, Id imagine its going to get more important), but I don't see anything homophobic. Actually, I think that particular storyline is too much like the actual musical, I liked how Chbosky expanded on them somewhat.
From what I've read so far, its not that bad, but I will have to say that I like the Chbosky one better, overall. I think it has some potential
would someone care to send me this please? That would be great! or is there a link somewhere..?

Evelyn, Chobsky didn't "INVENT" the concept of showing scenes while music, vo, or songs are played over them. Its a device thats been used before and will be used again, cos it works. Chobsky's whole beginning of the screenplay was written terribly. I liked Another Day, Tango Maureen. Roger in a pawn shop give me a break, the guy can't leave the apt. All of his dialogue with Mimi in Chobsky's draft was poorly written especially in the pawn shop and wouldn't you rather have Mimi and Roger sing Goodbye Love instead of Mimi saying once to Roger "Goodbye Love" as he runs away.

Evelyn- I have yet to hear more than one answer as to why Adam is so goddamn awful. The one time I got a CBer to explain the animosity, she said he was 'stuck up'. It's a source of constant frustration for me when people won't back up their opinions. A lot of CB is that way, this is just an example. The rest of the things you argued don't match with what I've seen on the site, which is whining and the occasional reason for it.
And if they are so intelligent, why bother with broadwayworld at all? You didn't seem to mind slamming us on CB. http://www.compulsivebowlers.com/boards/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=6746&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=60
"Oh, I have no problem indulging myself in a little immaturity now and then with the crybabies over at Broadwayworld. But when I want to engage in serious conversation (criticism, really) about anything related to Rent, I come here. In her rather childish call for everyone to shut the **** up complaining about news related to this film, Mimirocks made it pretty damn clear that she can't handle life on this board -- no matter how long she's been here wasting space. Thus, I recommended that she go to Broadwayworld where she'll be more welcomed by... her kind."

Insomniak - whole heartedly agree. I am also insanely sick of hearing that the OBC is too old.
I am not reading the script because there is never such a thing as a finshed script until that movie is on my movie screen. And besides, I don't want to know. Rent is very important to me, and I want to see it well adapted, and If Anthony says it's a good adaptation, then I'm set.
