Got a BFA in Musical Theatre from one of the "name" schools. Wasn't all its cracked up to be.
I agree with Somewhere in a Tree, don't get stuck in a vacuum. These conservatory programs are set up like boot camp. Minor in something. Get out, make some friends other than theatre people.
Currently preparing to audition for graduate schools, or I might just move to New York. We'll see.
I work as an assistant to an attorney who specializes in copyright law.
BA - Drama Lit, MS - Elementary/Early Childhood Education/Supervision. Never considered "show biz" as a real job for myself, just studied it for interest. Lifelong theater goer...
Genes have been passed on though..my daughter is a musician, currently working on Broadway.
I'm currently about to start my final (i.e. graduate) year in a 5-year BS/MS program in Health Services Administration with minors in Public Health, Music, and Business.
I'm planning to either get a job in my field after graduation, or working in entertainment PR or theatre administration. I may try to go back to school in a few years and get a Master's in PR, Media Management, or something more business-y (accounting, finance, management, or marketing)
Every living soul has got a voice - you've got to give it room and let it sing.
I majored in HISTORY at UCLA but never used that in my post graduate life...I have been: .... a gay porn actor and gay magazine cover man is in there too...lol
Wait wait wait. No one's going to comment on this? broadwaybabywannabe2: this is my favorite credit of yours. I won't ask for your portfolio, but is that you in your avatar?
I have a BFA in Theater Directing with a minor in Dance.
I work for a small not profit store front black box theater company directing usually 2-3 shows in their season. I also teach dance (jazz, tap, musical theater, modern and contemporary) for a competition dance team. I also direct and choreograph High School musicals for local schools in the burbs.
My survival job: I sell high end real estate, which allows me to make good money, yet still do what I love to do. Sometimes I wonder how I'd do if I put all my time in real estate....
I plan to apply to grad school for MFA Directing in the next 2 years or so. I just start studying the GRE and get to the math section and freak out.
Basically, I work non stop and don't really have a social life anymore. But at least I get to do what I love! I just wish I could make my living just directing where I can put all my time and energy in my shows without my brain focusing on all my other jobs.
I have a BFA in Musical Theater from a 'name' school as well.
13 years later, I've been in independent school admissions for almost nine years with four of those being a communications director. With the right people to work with and a strong force of will, you can do anything. Now I work in the admissions office of a school for the arts, where I coordinate theater department admissions. I make dreams come true, it's pretty great.
I'm an MD, currently more than halfway through my internal and emergency medicine residency. For fun, I manage Matthew Morrison's website, but that's just because he's a friend and a really nice and decent guy.
"Mr Sondheim, look: I made a hat, where there never was a hat, it's a Latin hat at that!"
I have a B.A. in Biochemistry. A minor in philosophy, with honors in classical philosophy and the social sciences. Hey - the way I see it? Do it all.
I work in an environmental lab, as an analyst in the GC/MS department. Theater is just a hobby. But SUCH a hobby - and a love - and really, when you live a hop, skip, and a jump from NYC, there is no good excuse not to go.
BA in History from UCBerkeley JD from Hastings (where I wrote/produced the student "revue") Coached Berkeley's Speech and Debate Team (including one national champion in Poetry Interpretation) Practicing lawyer since then specializing in insurance policy issues.
But, I'm from a family who has always loved theatre (some of whom - not me - peformed) and later in life have started directing a few community theatre shows, whose success is based on the people around me.
Bachelor of Commerce (major: marketing; minors: English and psychology).
Worked in the marketing department of a law firm – updating content on the firm’s website and social media. Presently on long-term disability leave. Previously did a variety of short term and contract jobs, including advertising copywriter, corporate concierge, production artist for a retail advertising flyer, customer service for a shopping mall, a hotel and a business improvement district, and English-language teacher in Japan.
My only theatrical claim to fame is having once volunteered as a stagehand for a benefit performance (3 performances, actually) of Little Shop of Horrors.
Coach Bob knew it all along: you've got to get obsessed and stay obsessed. You have to keep passing the open windows. (John Irving, The Hotel New Hampshire)
I'm currently majoring in rhetoric communication with minors in theatre and english. I was originally a theatre major until I realized it was making me hate theatre.
I also do a bunch of volunteer work (I work at an HIV testing center, do fundraising for a local performing arts non profit, and do social media and networking for a women's shelter). But mainly I am a writer and studying to get into graduate school.
In my final year for a dual BA in political science and English, plus a minor in Italian. In the process of applying for MFA programs for dramatic writing.
I currently work as a floor manager at my local touring venue and as a private piano teacher, and have recently begun volunteering with a literacy-advocacy nonprofit.
Bachelor of Music in Music Management and Voice (Hartt School of Music). Worked in non-profit theater for years in fundraising/special events. Now in a different industry. Also not singing as much as I would like to be /should be.
BA in Political Science and English Lit, then a JD, and now I work in immigration law. I worked box office and as a stagehand throughout college and law school, but now I'm strictly an audience member.
Also, seconding all the advice about taking diverse classes in college. I took classes in 13 departments and still wish I could have done more.
Goodness me,never even HEARD of any of these majors nor had the opportunity to study for them. I come from outback country and was only taught the 3Rs---theater/languages didn't exist at my schools. An inbuilt love of performing[Mother is a pianist]somehow gave me the courage, with parental support, at a later age[17] to take dancing/singing lessons. I supported myself at doing just that for the next 13 years until I decided that the travelling and uncertainty[and my body],needed a change. I succcessfully went into the next stage of my life/career but all that I learnt during my theatre years were essential for what was to follow. I am now very happily retired-39 years later.
After a garden variety BA, I worked in the family business. I left them to join the not for profit world. I've been a Development Director at a top 10 Orchestra, a national health organization, and now an international proving ground for young musicians.
But to be honest, my key pursuits are entertaining at home and at a wonderful country place. Gardening has become more important than donor prospects, and a killer cocktail party gives me more happiness than a seven figure gift.
Well, I'm at the point where Im starting to make some future carrer decisions. I wanted to be an actor, and I still do, but Im having second thoughts. Now I think I want to be a film director, but I only want to do certain projects. I would like to do films based on stage shows, because I think I have an eye for imagining and envisioning. Also...im considering screenwritting. I also am considering being a stage director (which I think would. Be pretty cool, and I think I have an eye for envisionibg onstage as well).
