Janelle Monae?"
God, I hope not. I can’t afford to be at every show which I’d have to be if that happened

Whaaaa who on earth. Certainly not one of the A List rappers like Megan, Nicki, Doja, or Cardi. Who could this be that would be an actual draw?

Monáe is from Kansas City and their record studio is based in Atlanta, so as much as I am manifesting Monáe's stage debut, this doesn't seem it
I've heard it's Estelle a British rapper/singer who does a voice on Stephen Universe. I've also heard the show is in fact closing with Groban's contract and the Lunt has a booked tenant for the spring so I've no idea what to believe.

I thought of Estelle, but aside from her voiceover work in animation, she really doesn’t have any solid acting credits. I don’t think they’d hire someone without a decent acting resume for this particular production. I think they’d cast a seasoned Broadway performer who doesn’t have a strong following outside the theatre before they’d cast Estelle. I don’t think she’d do anything for the box office.

Ramin is a lyric baritone, so he could maybe hit those lows, but not as good as a lower, heartier baritone like Groban. Although I did hear him hit a really nice low F in an instagram video, so who knows.
On Las Culturistas, one of the boys claims to have heard that Nicki Minaj is in negotiations. (A hilarious episode with the authors of DICKS THE MUSICAL where they lovingly refer to Sara Bareilles as an “old alto.&rdquo
Also, total grain of salt/this is probably not true/total hearsay, but I've heard they do hope to extend and an offer is out to Jake Gyllenhaal to replace Groban.
While I’ve heard the jake gyllenhal rumor swirling. I’ve heard more talk (by people closer to the decision making) that the show closes at the end of grobans contract in January and the Lunt is already lined up with its next tenant.
Chatting with a friend about this and she thinks Harry Connick could do it and generate some revenue. I thought he was a decent Warbucks but disliked him in The Sting. I don’t see him as Sweeney. I’d rather Cheyenne but he’s not big enough to compete with Groban revenue.
Aaron Tveit is learning the show (won't tell you how I know that). He has been very vocal about wanting to play Sweeney since..really since 2013. But especially this year that Sweeney is actually running. He also has Tommy Kail connections. He's also a big enough name to extend the show's run or keep it going, and he's a good friend to Annaleigh Ashford. Otherwise I've also heard the Gyllenhaal rumor. I really hope it's not closing:/
Aaron Tveit is a super-talented guy, but I do not see him in this role at all. If they are going to go with a Broadway dude with some TV/film exposure, Raul Esparza would be more appropriate and bring in just as many (or as few) ticket sales.

His Christian & John Wilkes Booth make ME see him in the role at least. And vocally I think it would fit, which many might disagree with me on since he's known for a very light lyric tenor. But recently his voice has darkened and it sits lower, and is much fuller than before. He also sounds more classical. So I can both see it and hear it. Even though he would still definitely have the highest, lightest voice of every Sweeneys ever, even if his voice is darker now. He's a versatile actor and vocalist. And he certainly has grown into his Sondheim. He got rave reviews for both Booth and Bobby. I agree that Raúl would make a great Sweeney too! I'm hoping they extend and just let a bunch of Broadway vets live out their Sweeney dream. Which probably won't happen, but hey, one can dream. I would also love to see Jason Danieley as Sweeney!!!
The key to actually selling tickets is a star bigger than Groban (or at least one appealing to a different demographic). Tveit + Ashford aren't that in the slightest.
Unless Jeffrey Seller just wants to blow some HAMILTON profits on it and burn money every week with, like, Josh Henry & Bonnie Milligan, which I'd gladly see.
If we're not having fun, then why are we doing it?
These are DISCUSSION boards, not mutual admiration boards. Discussion only occurs when we are willing to hear what others are thinking, regardless of whether it is alignment to our own thoughts.
looks like we got our wish, since he just announced the show is not closing in January. They must have found a replacement. Makes sense since the show is selling out still. Money wasted if it closed. its more about the music and Sondheim than the star.
