I actually liked the "crumpled ticket" logo better than the original logo that had an outline of the ship done with little lights and the word TITANIC written with various large and small letters to fit in the ship. It just looked bad.
Although I like it because I know the show and the story behind why they used the picture...a lot of people who see my poster of LaChiusa's The Wild Party hate it. They say the face is scary and it looks like the eyes are following them around the room LOL.

I'm sorry to have to report that, IMO, my beloved Sweeney Todd has the worst poster in town! Did the artist(s) even SEE the production?! Blue? Why BLUE! Tell me!! There's not a stitch of blue anywhere on that stage that I can see - even Tobias' pj's look steel gray to me.
Home runs could easily have been hit by using the excellent black, white, and red color themes displayed throughout. (White Stripes, anyone??)
For a show that is so iconically designed, how could a poster like that be let out onto the public? It does not indicate at all, IMO, the harmonious, luscious lighting, costume, and scenic successes nestled and pulsing within the theater walls.
I know Fidelity Investments is sponsoring the show, but must they make its posters and ads look like bank circulars?
(don't get me started on the website... they had/have a chance to pull in A LOT more viewers if they'd update it - make it fun, modern and fresh - duh!)
Wow - been waiting to vent about that one for a while! Thanks Broadwayworld.com!
The problem with the new Rent poster is that it's almost Art Deco. It looks too much like 1940's Hollywood.
If anyone ever tells you that you put too much Parmesan cheese on your pasta, stop talking to them. You don't need that kind of negativity in your life.
I believe that the ugliest posters ever for a Broadway show are:
the Broadway version of "Chess" (How Trevor Nunn could replace that terrific one from the concept album with this, I'll never know. This looks like the cover of a very bad spy novel. And one that was published by a "vanity" press, at that!)
and
"A Doll's Life" (Supposedly, the New York Times refused to print the original poster that featured a topless doll. But this one looks like it was doodled on napkin at lunch.)
And both of these were done by reputable poster artists. The "Chess" was done by the same people who did "Cats" and the original "Chess" and "Les Mis" etc. And "Doll's Life" was done by Fraver, who did the original "Sweeney Todd" and "Deathtrap"! You can view both of them at the Triton Gallery website.

"Life keeps happening everyday, Say Yes" - 70, Girls, 70
"Life is what you do while you're waiting to die" - Zorba
I thought the poster for Little Women was lame. Just useless.

"They're singing, "Happy Birthday"
You just wanna lay down and cry
Not just another birthday, it's 30/90
Why can't you stay 29
Hell, you still feel like you're 22
Turn 30 in 1990
Bang! You're dead, what can you do?"

It's not really bad, but the poster for "The Drowsy Chaperone" confused the HELL out of me when I saw in it L.A. I just couldn't tell if it was, like, serious, or if all the pictures of the cast would really be on the playbill, or what. I'm just not a fan.
I hate the new RENT one, and I really don't care for the Assassins revival one. It looks like they put no thought into it and just made something up quickly.

I guess I'm a sucker for the simple posters with a very recognizable logo (Lion King, Cats, Wicked) ...for this reason, I really really liked Little Women's poster (blushes..). I know it was kind of cheesy, buy I thought it was pretty clever and simple. shrugs..
I wouldn't be surprised if the RENT Now campaign didn't have some strange subliminal message. The colors are all 70's and blend together. Not to mention there are so many images on the poster you never know what hidden messages could be on that poster. So maybe it has teens across America chanting "RENT now. RENT now. RENT now."
I don't remember if I posted in here or not but I have to agree that the Rent poster is flippin hideous. As much as I love that show, I can't stand that poster. It looks like Barney threw up all over it.
Well, I'll aruge the other side. I really like the new RENT poster. I think speaks to the new generation of teens. It is the sort of "style" that is circulating right now, just look at some of the new CD covers of some of the new punk/emo/poprock artists. It might not work for some of ya'll, but as a teenager, I'm really drawn to it. Although, its hard to beat the original. But I applaud them for trying to keep it contemporary.
Oh lord, the world will come to an end when RENT is categorized as punk/pop rock/ and emo music.
I was in the city and saw one of the RENT now posters and a bunch of kids my age or a couple years older (15-1 were making fun of it commenting on how ugly it was. So I don't think it's appealing to anybody...just like the DVD cover. bleck.
