Though, I must admit, John Travolta, not the most flattering in drag. But, that's not costuming, he just has a really unique face.
"You just can't win. Ever. Look at the bright side, at least you are not stuck in First Wives Club: The Musical. That would really suck. "

He's definitely old enough to be Nikki's mother, but he looks too young. Almost like an older cousin as opposed to her mother. The only qualm I have is the hair seems too thick. In the original film and on stage, Edna's hair was stringy. It makes the transformation that much more dramatic. But that's just a minor issue and won't really detract me.

Ha! That's the funniest one of all. Marc, I am surprised you didn't think of that one.
Does anyone else think that Betty Boop would be a DIVINE Edna, if Hairspray was ever done in animated form? I mean if Harvey, Bruce or Lenny weren't available?
am i the only one who really thinks travolta looks terrible? after seeing the hilarious Divine and the even funnier Harvey in this role, Travolta looks dumb... and actually kind of creepy.
i dont like it. but the girl who plays Tracy looks really great.
Don't hurt me, but shouldn't his fingers be fatter?
"The gods who nurse this universe think little of mortals' cares. They sit in crowds on exclusive clouds and laugh at our love affairs. I might have had a real romance if they'd given me a chance. I loved him, but he didn't love me. I wanted him, but he didn't want me. Then the gods had a spree and indulged in another whim. Now he loves me, but I don't love him." - Cole Porter
Let me preface this by saying that I have no invested interest in Hairspray whatsoever. I've never seen the original film, I've never seen the Broadway show, only heard bits and pieces of the cast recording, and seen certain live performances (the Tonys, the Today Show, and Chester Gregory on Broadway on Broadway 2 or 3 years ago).
That being said, I think what's been seen of the production and whatnot of the movie so far looks fabulous. With each picture that gets out, with each piece of casting news, with each piece of news from Marc, I get more and more excited for this movie to come out. I have nothing to compare any of it too, which is probably why its so easy for me to be so gung ho about everything. But really - it looks great. I can't wait for it!
The cast is loaded with fabulous ACTORS and singers, an amazing production team, and the material is hysterical. Casting always changes for film versions of musicals, now matter how amazing the originals were. Julie didn't do My Fair Lady, Chita didn't do West Side Story, and so on and so forth. The list is endless.
Anyone who doesn't think this film is going to be fan-****ing-tastic is out of their mind! Go sniff some more hairspray! Updated On: 9/8/06 at 03:21 PM
I'm excited to see what he can do with the part, and think he may surprise us! best12--I know exactly what you mean. He was hilarious on SNL. I have a soft spot for Travolta, what can I say? I also think Michelle Pfeiffer seems perfect.
