Also, Lin Manuel Miranda is not some Moses who led Broadway to equality. There were a lot of people who came before him y'know.
"

To further clarify for those who are confused:

The Booth Theatre is not named after John Wilkes Booth, who killed a Lincoln. It is named after Edwin Booth, who saved a Lincoln. (Namely, the president's son.)

Can we at least redeem this thread by turning into a discussion of Edwin Booth? Apparently he was the greatest Hamlet of the century and performed the role more times than any other actor. Lincoln was a particularly big fan of Edwin.

Edwin and John Wilkes were kind of the Alec Baldwin and one of the other crappy Baldwin brothers of their day. Edwin was a favorite of the culturally elite whereas JW was doing pirate shows and moderate low-brow garbage. Although JW never performed at the theater I used to work at, Edwin did own the the theater from 1862-1865. Interesting that he never let his brother perform on that stage.

I'd love to see a good movie or series about the Booths.

From Wikipedia: "Booth did not know the identity of the man whose life he had saved until some months later".

What are the odds!!! Amazing thread guys I'm learning a lot, after getting a good laugh out of the OP. XD

Better off starting a new thread for that. Most people interested in that would be smart enough not to click in to this mess.

Oh goodie. Another fake woke teenager who doesn't know what they're talking/pretending to be "woke" about. Like we don't have enough of those in this community.

I remember hearing about Edwin Booth in Sarah Vowell's book Assassination Vacation and when she mentioned to her British friend that Booth was said to have been the greatest Shakespearean actor of that century, he replied "In America maybe..."

Under the "reasons for signing" on the petition page....

"lincoln freed the slaves. LIN freed us all. i'll never be satisfied until this happens."

Good god... delete this board. Delete your account. Delete your petition. Thank you!

And this is what the op wrote for the petition, so important that basic rules of writing need not apply:

booth was a bad man who killed Lincoln who freed the slaves. There should not be a theater named for him. like the confederate statues we should rename Booth Theater after Lin Manuel Miranda who is a much better idol/inspiration we should all aspire to be. lin Manuel Miranda bought equality to Broadway and that is who we should be honoring.

And wouldn't you think, just maybe, the op would FIX her egregious error so as not to lead others astray?

If we're not having fun, then why are we doing it? These are DISCUSSION boards, not mutual admiration boards. Discussion only occurs when we are willing to hear what others are thinking, regardless of whether it is alignment to our own thoughts.

Dear OP, I hope you have the humility to read these responses and improve your school project.

If not, I am crossing my fingers you fail miserably.

For the record, LMM hasn't freed me from anything.

OP, you may want to consider two works, one a film, the other a play.

The film is PRINCE OF PLAYERS (1955) about the life of Edwin Booth, starring Richard Burton (if you don't know who he was, consider him the Edwin Booth of the 20th century) and written by Moss Hart (if you don't know who he was, look him up). John Wilkes Booth is played in the film by John Derek (he had a wife named Bo). The movie may teach you a great deal about Edwin Booth, including his struggles to not be hated for his brother's having assassinated the president.

The other is a play that not to o ong ago, and very appropriately, played the Booth Theatre, Jon Robin Baitz's OTHER DESERT CITIES. it concerns another show business family, this one fictional, with political scars similar to that of the Booths. The Wyeths have their own fateful issues concerning their past and the kind of guilt in politically motivated violence by association with a family member that distinguished the Booths.

Roxy would have used this thread to rant about Hamilton ticket prices and the time his wife got yelled at in the bathroom for saying she didn’t want to see the show.

From WHAT?!?

While I greatly admire his accomplishments, I'm here to tell you that I also managed to survive several decades without him.
"

But some of us weren't privileged to live during that time. He was only 4 when I was born, but it still proves that I have never lived in the world without him, so that makes him even more important and better.

In all honesty, I hope this assignment is a joke. I know if I had put together something as unthoughtless as this, I would definitely get an F.

Well, there are theatres named for Brooks Atkinson and Walter Kerr and they killed lots of careers.

"All this time I thought it was named for the 20th century’s most beloved and iconic actress, Shirley Booth."

Not Booth Tarkington (writer), or Hubert Cecil Booth (inventor of the vacuum cleaner)?
