Congratulations to Jasmine! I saw her years ago in Becoming Nancy and then later as Gretchen in Mean Girls. She’s truly radiant and a major talent.

Maybe you’d be happy if they just put one of those enormous plush theme park heads on her. Then she could look identical to the Betty you so fondly remember.

Jerry Mitchell, the only person who can cast his husband in everything and no one bats on eye

Define "everything"? Jerry Mitchell has directed or choreographed fifteen Broadway shows and his husband hasn't been in a single one of them. In fact, Ricky has never worked on Broadway (though was in the tour & off-Bway production of KINKY BOOTS).

Michael Grandage and Casey Nicholaw always use their spouses as designers. Jeanine Tesori employed her husband as a Music Director. Sonia Friedman's currently producing a show directed by her sister and has produced shows written by her partner. Blanchett worked with her husband. Danny & Lucy DeVito are working together. Georgia Stitt often plays piano for her husband's shows. It's no coincidence that Maggie Lakis has been cast in both of Rob McClure's recent tours.

Nobody's batting an eye at any of these things. You seem to be trying to create something out of nothing.

Who cares and does it really matter? He did the Kinky Boots tour and Off Broadway fand Hairspray Live for Jerry that's all. Boop then I guess Devil Wears Prada when it lands on Broadway. lol

In literature, Stephen King, wife/editor Tabitha King and son Joe Hill always have their fingers in each other’s work. And it’s an odd cast of reverse nepotism: the more the extended King family is involved in the patriarch’s work, the better it usually turns out (especially since Tabitha helps King focus his climaxes and endings into satisfying narratives).

Something tells me if Ben platt casted Noah Galvin

in a show the board would be up in arms

At least, for me, it doesn’t feel weird because he’s just an ensemble member. If Ben Platt cast (note: casted is not a word) his husband in a leading role for something he was directing, again, wouldn’t be weird to me given the circumstances.

To me it’s only annoying if the parents are footing the bill and forcing someone down our throats (Like Funny Girl)

Where on earth does this rumor about BF's parents "footing the bill" for FUNNY GIRL come from? That show had 40 co-producers above the title, and two of Broadway's most seasoned producers (Sonia Friedman & Scott Landis) leading it. If her parents did invest in that $16.5M musical, that's fine and they're legally allowed to do so, but it was no more than a passive investment. There's no bankrolling happening.

As for Platt and his husband: They cast themselves in THEATER CAMP, alongside some other talented friends. They were both great in it, as was the rest of that ensemble, and it grossed about as much as some recent Best Picture nominees and is now widely available to stream.

If anyone has problems with the aforementioned people being cast in projects, there are in-network professionals available to talk you through your problems.

I know it didn’t outright happen but she didn’t get cast on her merits and if she did, then shame on all of them because they still made their money back. And same with the Apatow girl. Oof.

Few people know who Jerry Mitchell’s husband is. There are far more brazen examples of nepotism in  the entertainment industry (do we really think any of Meryl Streep’s daughters would have their careers were it not for their mother?).

And we don’t know the circumstances behind Feldstein’s casting, but it seems to me the most simple explanation is the most likely: there was a gross overestimation of her star power and ability to carry that show, for which the people who made that decision were never really held to account and they were willing to throw her under the bus for.

Nepo baby discourse is so boring.  Who should have been cast in this role?  You?

Maybe someone who has been working their ass off to make it in the business that hasn’t gotten a credit to their name yet instead of someone who just slept and married the director

Dude’s in the ensemble, not playing Betty Boop. Did he snipe you while you were trying to flirt with Mitchell or something?

Really fun performance, very Jerry Mitchell. I'm getting serious Some Like It Hot vibes so maybe for the best for the Boop team that that will be closing on Broadway in the meantime.
