To the people trying to defend this audience member with, “She did have a mask on, it just wasn’t over her nose,” do you really think that makes any significant difference? As others have pointed out, wearing the mask improperly renders it useless. But also if a person is wearing a mask incorrectly, they are blatantly choosing not to follow the rules. We’ve been living with masks for over two years, there’s no excuse for not knowing how to wear one properly. And I can assure you there are a plethora of reminders from before you buy the ticket until you leave the theatre. Not to mention the thousand-plus other audience members around you doing it correctly. People who try to get away with pulling their masks down in the theatre think they’re slick and deserve to be called out and kicked out.

No, I live in a world where I understand the need to be vaxxed and boostered and that, if done, the mask doesn't remain a necessity. I also live in a world where you can make a point, even an urgent and serious one, without viciously lashing out at people--especially when you yourself aren't following the same protocol, but applicable even when you are.
"

None of this matters. The rules of the theater are you are to wear a mask at all times. If you don't like the rules, then don't go.
"

It absolutely does matter when it comes to the sort of dressing down the person got. Insane. Totally Patti. Sure her fans are overjoyed.

I’ve listened to three separate audios, and the defiant audience member, who had previously been warned to properly wear the mask says: “I’m a patron!”

That woman now has the story of a lifetime.

The woman decides to take it upon herself to retort “where are yours”, and if for some reason this woman was unaware of what happens when one crosses LuPone, she sure learned the hard way. I, for one, look forward to telling people “CHRIS HARPER PAYS MY SALARY” every chance I can."

Actually, that makes it worse. The audience member is right. No one onstage is wearing a mask. I'm sure the argument is that the actors are more than 6 feet from the audience. Guess what? That math works both ways.
"

I knew Patti's haters would find some way to complain about even this. The audience member agreed to wear a mask properly. The cast agreed to perform without one. Two separate standards that were previously agreed to. You are letting your admitted dislike of Lupone cloud your judgement.
"

Lol "Patti's haters...even this." I don't hate her. But she's known for outrageous behavior and overreaction (to the point that Steven Sondheim dressed her down in a letter because of a rude thing she'd wrote to him about another performer). If you love her, not just her talent, I guess it means you love this behavior. I admire her talent and hope she cops another Tony for her Joanne. But I think her behavior is way out of line and ignores the difference between a pre-vaxx, pre-booster world and the one we now live in.

Does it? She had COVID and had to be out of the show barely a few weeks ago, and it wasn't even during one of the "surge" periods in NYC, which we are in now (again). Performers are calling out sick literally every week in most if not all shows because they're testing positive. Hospitals in NYC are once again overwhelmed, and providers have been asked to pick up additional shifts. Not to mention, US hit 1mil mark of people who died of the virus on 3 days ago. Just because some/most of us have gotten tired and don't want to care about it anymore, it doesn't mean the Patti's behavior is not fully and completely justified in the specific context she was in. Also, the most viral clip does not include the part where she asked them very nicely before they escalated it by refusing very rudely.

You mean security. Ushers don't have the authority to ask anyone to leave.

The audience member isn't right for several reasons. The main one being the protocol in place at the theater is to have your mask on at all times unless actively eating or drinking.  The pre-show announcement even specifically says "...cover your nose and mouth. That's it"

The actors and anyone working at The Jacobs are tested 4-5 times a week to ensure that no one in the building is sick and/or bringing covid backstage.  Obviously testing is logistically impossible for audiences and so the mask rule is being enforced. It is not a ridiculous request and it's a simple practice to follow.  It's also out of consideration to the other audience members and Company employees.

Patti repeatedly asked the woman to lift her mask over her nose. The defiance is what led to the final outburst.  Patti and anyone working in theater should be pissed off. They lost their livelihood for 2 solid years. Theater is back but let's be honest still struggling. The least a "patron" or "patriot" can do is wear the mask properly to help keep shows open.

I'll put the disclaimer that I fully agree with Patti and support her actions, but I also recognize the meme that is a diva moment.

Patti probably ain't doing anymore talkbacks.

A Chorus Line revival played its final Broadway performance on August 17, 2008. The tour played its final performance on August 21, 2011. A new non-equity tour started in October 2012 played its final performance on March 23, 2013. Another non-equity tour launched on January 20, 2018. The tour ended its US run in Kansas City and then toured throughout Japan August & September 2018.

I understand Patti’s outrage, I sincerely do…but her response to the “mask offender” was too aggressive in the sense that she had all the power in this particular situation by “losing it” in the way that she did.

She had already scolded the offender, she should have ignored the additional rude comments made and let security do their job. It was inevitable they would be asked to leave.

She chose instead to unnecessarily hurl an expletive at the offender and escalated an already disagreeable situation.

She could have handled this better - but at this stage of the game I don’t think she cares how she comes off to others or what other people think.

"Opinions are very interesting because we all have different ones. You are entitled to your opinion, but that does not mean you should always give it to others, especially when your opinion is not necessarily grounded in truth, but in what you believe or want to believe."

I'm not disagreeing with the message or advocating for oneself.

It is her tone and behaviour is an inappropriate way to solve a problem. Why use the F-word like that? Unnecessary.

Consider what a non-celebrity on a panel would be treated if that was them. They would be escorted out.

Ask yourself - would you speak the same in this situation and feel you could get away with that behaviour?

But Patti lashing out to audiences seems like it's become entertainment.

She reacted in a genuine way. You can’t fault someone for having a gut reaction. Patti is Patti…she doesn’t pull punches, she doesn’t mince words. Under the exact same circumstances anyone could react any number of ways. She said what she said and felt what she felt and responded accordingly to her personal standards.
