It's good the the acting categories are at 5-6 nominees after de-gendering them. Every other category in awards are de-gendered with similar nominations.
Actors should receive no more, or less, than any other contributor to a show, male or female, or in number of possible nominations. If it's about equality, it's going in the right direction to give equality to the awards, in general.
The Tonys should do the same.
"
I would disagree for one main reason—almosteveryshow has one lighting designer, one sound designer, etc., but most have multiple cast members. There are maybe thirty people eligible for scenic design on Broadway this year but over a hundred people who could be nominated for performance. From a numbersstandpoint, I think actors need more potential nominations."
I would also add that if the Tonys were to degender acting categories just like the Outer Critics Circle Awards, there’d be a number of worthy performances that would’ve gotten nominated under normal circumstances snubbed.
My biggest takeaway is the lack of Hell's Kitchen in major categories. The reviews had me thinking it may be the frontrunner for Best Musical, but now I'm back to thinking it's a two-way race between Suffs and Illinoise - or at best a three-way race. It's such an odd year!

I wouldn’t count The Outsiders out. People love the fresh, young energy it’s bringing to Broadway.
I feel like it has to be said every year, but none of these awards are good precursors for how the Tonys will shake out. You can discern some trends but all of these awards are so idiosyncratic in what they cover and are such a small sample size they’re really not reliable as prediction tools beyond already obvious contenders.

So happy to see HLL remembered for both OCC and Drama League - hopefully Tony nominators will too!

I thought Justin Guarini and Jennifer Simard were both incredible in Once Upon... Unfortunately they submitted Guarini under lead actor at the Tonys which all but killed any sliver of a chance he had.

Ugh, what a dumb call. That's really too bad."
It does not really matter, as neither one was going to get a Tony nomination in supporting categories. There is too much competition. The fact that they got Outer Critics Circle nominations is pretty irrelevant, considering the nominations in many categories.

I think we both know that. The first thing I wrote was "While conceding it's meaningless for the Tonys..." and MayAudraBlessYou2 said he might have had, at best, a sliver of a chance in supporting. But competition aside, a remote chance in a category someone does belong in will almost always be better than their chances in a category where their placement is much more of a stretch. (Also, Simard did not get an Outer Critics Circle nomination. MayAudra was just expressing appreciation for her performance, not her awards chances.)

Outstanding Featured Performer in a Broadway Musical
Kara Young is incredibly strong for Featured Actress. It will definitely be between her and Sarah Pidgeon, but I'm talking to a lot of people leaning towards Young, and they still vividly recall her performance.
Also of note...I think Jeremy Strong fans will be disappointed on Tony night. Leslie Odom Jr. could also pull out a win and has been an extremely popular choice in these early awards. In an all gender category, the women are reigning though. I'm told Lange, Paulson, and McAdams are ALL getting more votes than any nominated man. Odom is the most popular male choice, but Strong is much further down ballot.
What you’re saying doesn’t really add up since all the non Broadway acting awards had male winners, though with a woman and non-binary actor tying for two. Same with Odom being higher than Strong on the all gendered ballot since he wasn’t even nominated here, nor was Strong at the Drama Desk. So the only category they’re sharing is the all male Tony’s lineup.
Edit: And the Drama League Award, but that’s really not equivalent to the smaller Tony lineups and voting amounts to rewarding the veteran Broadway star more often than the Tonys. It’s really not the kind of award you should rely on for Tony predix.
I know Odom isn't nominated here. I'm considering all the smaller theater awards. I've been talking to folks with Drama Desk, OCC, Dorian, and Drama League. They all have de-gendered categories for acting, and while their ultimate slate of nominees differs (DL is obviously not a direct comparison and doesnt quite fit here given their acting prize) it has been quite interesting hearing similar trends that emerge. One of those trends is that when lead actor and actress in a play are combined, this year the women are garnering far more support. No matter the lineup, the man with the most votes is usually down in 4th place. This is just a unique quirk of that particular category this year.
None of these awards are true precursors for The Tonys in the way that things like the guild awards are precursors for the Oscars. But it still piques my interest when a trend like this emerges across multiple voting bodies.
Based on this, I just think perhaps Lead Actress in a Play is more competitive and closer than previously thought for the Tony Award, since many folks predict Paulson easily walks away with the thing. And many discounted Odom since Purlie is long closed, but I suggest he has a real shot as there is passion for that show.
Leslie Odom Jr's real problem is that he's a recent winner. 8 years is not that long, especially for a show that's still as popular as Hamilton.
Jeremy Strong's reviews have been universally acclaimed and he has the benefit of just leaving one of the most critically acclaimed shows ever made. It worked out for Bryan Cranston after Breaking Bad.

Odom is very much disliked in the Broadway community (including by many who are Tony voters). I can't see them wanting to reward him for his behavior. This one is Strong's to lose.
