I was wondering why people were leaving the theatre early. I work on 42nd and got out at around the same time, like 10:40. Assumed they just tightened up the show. Overheard people murmuring about something happening, but nothing else. No ambulances were there yet.

I don't remember, but were people screaming for Little Mermaid to be shut down when that actor fell from the ship rigging and seriously injured himself, or is it just because it's Spiderman that nobody is allowed to be hurt. Yes, I know that this show has had more than a few injuries already, but, according to the PSM in the recent Variety article, Fosse, Starlight Express, and Cats had more by this point in their own runs up to opening.
so i guess damiano and spiderman fell together and spiderman landed on top of her? this sounds truly awful. best wishes to a quick recovery to both of them

I don't understand how or why this show has been so unsafe. Circuses have been doing aerial tricks for years. What is Julie Taymor's issue? There's breaking new ground and then there's this. Enough is enough.
We've spoken to a couple of audience members now:

No official word yet from the production, who we've reached out to as well.

I do recall some anger on the board regarding that. But didn't that accident happen during a rehearsal with no audience and we found out much later when the actor sued Disney? I think the difference is that this latest accident happened in front of an audience. It's more "immediate".
From the sounds of it, my guess is that he fell past her down into the pit and she saw the whole thing up close. That would explain the screams and the sobs.
This injury could completely cripple the production. There is definitely a lawsuit to be had here, on top of even more bad press.
This is really getting out of hand. I really wanted to see this show, but I rather it close now without me seeing it, then hear someone else get injured. I don't understand their problem. Was 3 not too many injuries?
what the heck happened during "Fosse" previews that people got injured??
Sounds promising: (from BWW article)
"I was in the audience and i'm an NY EMT. Although i am not involved with the care of the patient they didn't use a back-board and collar so they don't suspect spinal injury. The ambulance stayed on site longer then expected leading to believe the injury isn't critical."
Wait, so I get that it happened when MJ is suppose to be falling off of the bridge but did both the man playing Spider-Man and Jennifer Damiano fall?

Are they waiting for someone to get killed before they close this show?
Life is precious people!
What happened to the Little Mermaid guy? He got paid a TON right?
"Kad, I find your use of the word "cripple" a little unsettling."
I didn't even think about the unfortunate implications of that after I posted it.

I don't see how they could know that, since the actors in question were below the stage when they were treated.
Well, someone else posted that they saw someone being loaded into the ambulance still wearing his Spider-Man costume. So, it is possible that this EMT saw them loading him in as well.

^Where has it been said they were below the stage?
Adamgreer,
Im guessing that at this point, this EMT guy saw them taking the actor out of the theater... and if it was a more serious injury, with the risk of a spinal injury, they would have used the neck and back things (whatever they are called)
I believe it's been said that they fell into the pit...there's a bit in the second act where MJ falls off the Brooklyn Bridge and Spidey follows her down and I'd assume that's where this happened.
It's going to be ALL speculation until at least the morning.

I've read many places that they both ended up in the pit. At least that's what I got out of it.
Isn't speculation one of the things we do best here at BWW?
Only confirmation in tonight's Spider-Man accident is that it was a 31 year old male actor.
