Wow. This was the week I was waiting to see before saying some shows had turned the tide, but now that all the holiday tourists have gone and been back home and the numbers are holding up - it’s looking much better for some of these shows, I think.

13 out of 23 shows still grossed over $1 million despite it being the dead of winter which typically foreshadows any possible future closures. Some Like It Hot took a nosedive though which isn't good.

A Chorus Line revival played its final Broadway performance on August 17, 2008. The tour played its final performance on August 21, 2011. A new non-equity tour started in October 2012 played its final performance on March 23, 2013. Another non-equity tour launched on January 20, 2018. The tour ended its US run in Kansas City and then toured throughout Japan August & September 2018.

That's really not bad overall for most shows despite expected drops from last week. I wonder if the overall thinner selection of shows is helping them stay afloat during these winter weeks.

Is that a Jinkx Monsoon bump for Chicago?

It was her first full week in CHICAGO, so I definitely think the bump is due to her, especially since there isn’t any other star casting right now and this week began Broadway 2-for-1 week.

I think she’s going to be a great moneymaker for the show. I’ve known people who flew across the country or are planning to just to see her.

They should rename it Broadway Month instead of Broadway Week, since it's Jan 17-Feb 12. (Not complaining –– if it gets butts in seats during the doldrums of winter, that's fine by me.)

Good week, only a couple of moderate drops.

Loving the Jinkx Monsoon and Aaron Tveit bumps!

Grab your torches, head back to camp. Goodnight.

I agree with Jordan. This was definitely the first week without any tourists and while shows saw drops, their grosses were relatively in line with that they've been doing since Christmas.

Kimberly Akimbo while down and once again hovering around its break even, its gross sales are up 5% to Christmas week and gross ticket sales are up 27%. I have to assume Stone wouldn't set prices so low that it isn't at least breaking even playing to  93% capacity. Clearly the show is finding its audience, the question is are they willing to pay to see it at a high enough price point that the show makes money.

Some Like It Hot, is selling 33% better per performance in gross sales then it was during the week of Christmas, and 44% higher capacity. Its also relatively flat to what it did 2 weeks ago. The outlook for Some Like It Hot is definitely more gloomy then Kimberly Akimbo, as its still under 80% capacity, but its still selling significantly better than it did in 2022.

Also it should be noted Jinkx Monsoon's first week in Chicago outsold Pamela Anderson's by $10K and 500 tickets, so if this even slightly continues I would expect a lot more stunt casting from Drag race...

But lastly if we take into account Broadway Week began last week, so excluding shows that didn't play 8 performances last week or closed last week, there were about 1.3K more tickets sold this week definitely makes the picture much brighter.

A BEAUTIFUL NOISE continues to impress. Weekends are sold-out and they have the 5th highest average ticket price.

Also amazing that Phantom of the Opera was the highest grossing show last week with $2,227,185. Only show to gross 2 million last week.

I am thinking the same thing. Even older shows like Hadestown are in better shape than they were before the holiday season. A bunch of January closings leads to more ticket sales for everyone else.

Do they also do the grosses for off-Broadway shows anywhere? That'd be interesting to see!

I remain flummoxed by everything 2nd Stage does beyond the onstage quality of their shows. They have a major star (Common), and the show is filling most of its seats in a tiny house, but at a low average price. Subscribers cannot be entirely to blame. Something is very off in their business model.

The obvious cause is a personality problem at the top of the company's leadership, who has caused transient personnel issues with Exec Directors and Associate Artistic Directors and Artistic Producers. Advertising (the worst creative on Broadway), pricing, and perhaps producing practices must be rethought...I don't really see how their Board can view this as okay when stars like Chris Evans and Common and Straight White Men continually undergross in 2nd Stage shows at the (Helen) Hayes.

MTC should be doing better, too, but that's old news.

I think the weather the past month has much to do with the successful Broadway's box offices. It's been a warmer than usual January in the northeast, with little precipitation (mostly rain, not snow) which has enticed people to leave their homes / apartments at night and on weekends and 'do something' fun to escape the winter blahs. The 'something' these people seem to be doing  has been to see a Broadway production, and enjoy themselves. (What money they are saving on heating costs at home is probably being used for dinner and a theater ticket).

IF Janaury was blustery, below freezing, and snow storm after snow storm, theatergoers would be huddled in their homes / apartments by a cozy fire and watching Netflix - not bundling up to go out and brave the elements. The Broadway box offices would've taken a hit.

Just my opinion.

It's a nonprofit. Isn't it a good thing that they're letting people see stars in quality material and productions at far less than the usual Broadway price?

No, because Off-Broadway isn't overseen in the way Broadway is - there is an Off-Broadway League, but shows have to pay to join it, as opposed to just...being in it by default. (Adding that I don't know if Broadway shows have to pay dues, but Broadway shows are in the League whether by default or via mandate.) The OBL is also very small in terms of staff. It's a handful of people.

Off-Broadway is really a horse of a different color - we talk about Broadway shows being separate entities, but Off-Broadway shows are...estranged entities. lol

I used to freelance for the OBL/Lortels doing social media and trying to wrangle info about the dozens upon dozens of Off-Broadway shows that change so often was a monumental task.

Exactly. My impression is that they are breaking even on these projects, and otherwise trying to get as many people to see theater as they can. Shouldn't we be applauding this?

Just amazing that Funny Girl is commanding the highest average ticket price, and that with Julie Benko's performance reducing the average price (I base this on the fact that her performances are always at TKTS and don't sell out (holiday week-ends are a different beast.  Those producers should be very thankful, etc., because it is still a crummy production, enriched because of LM's performance.

I am also amazed by Chicago's uptick, since I have never heard of Jinx Monsoon (obviously, a lot of people have) and she is in a (meaty but) supporting role.  Good for her (and Chicago).

Very true! Does anyone know the last time Phantom topped the grosses?

I know Lion King normally grosses higher than Phantom so I looked at 1997 grosses and noticed week ending 12/28/97 Phantom topped the grosses at $875k and Lion King had $873k. I’m not sure if that was the last time Phantom topped the grosses but that’s my educated guess. Regardless, kudos to Phantom this past week!

She’s won drag race twice and is the most recent All Stars winner. Excited for her but not sure other Drag Race girls would have the same effect besides maybe one or two.

100%!!! I do think their marketing could be better, but going after them for creating affordable ways to see quality theatre is just dumb.

I'm happy for Jinkx, but I doubt we'll see too many more Drag Stars in Chicago. Jinkx is selling well, but her entire brand as a queen is musical theatre/cabaret/theatrics. This is a moment people have been anticipating. I doubt you could throw another random queen into the show and expect the same results. I.e: see Peppermint in Head Over Heels.

In terms of profitability? Absolutely. In terms of talent? I think there are a slew of Ru Girls that could easily do the part. I'd love to see Monet X Change do it. She's got the vocals and attitude. And she's been on the show 3 times, so she's got the fan base, I think.
