Good call not bringing in the Lyric opera house of chicago production in..you know the one with actors who could actually act and have sexual and emotional tension? Laura Osnes and Steve Pasquale would (should) have been in this.

Still mad that we never got to have that duo on Broadway!

No. Next question?
I think this production has an incredible cast, but the direction they were given hurt their performances. Jessie and Josh probably would've had more sexual, primal tension under better direction. Although, Steven Pasquale and Phillipa Soo would be extraordinary in Carousel together, especially considering the fact that they're a real life couple. The passion would be 100% real.
Just a production of unmet expectations.

^This. I figured it would last until New Years and then the theatre would sit out the reason of the season before a summer show (Moulin Rouge maybe) would have taken swung in. Now I don't know what could go in but I am sure that whomever it is, them wanting the theatre for this season was a factor in this. Otherwise, I was sure they would let it go through holiday season.
It would not have mattered if Laura and Stephen were in this doomed production, the direction would have killed it. Oh, and real life couples don't always translate well to the stage. That, and Pippa would not be a good Julie.
I hope everyone finds more work, this is very abrupt.

Grateful I got to see Joshua Henry's Soliloquy live- that alone was worth the price of admission
Very sad to see all the actors and dancers out of work, but this production needed to go. Misguided and barely directed. Excellent actors left out to dry.
One thing I am thrilled with is that it brought us a well deserved Tony for Mendez.
This could help MY FAIR LADY's (already great) sales going forward, since after September 16 that will be the only option for classic musical fans.
Phillipa would be a great Julie. Right voice, right look, right presence. However, I thought Jessie was perfect casting. It's unfortunate that she didn't have a stronger director.
Wow it is true that pretty soon, My Fair Lady will be the only classic musical on Broadway. It's really a tragedy that Dolly is closing.

This is not a "waiting in the wings" closing; it's a "don't throw good money after bad" closing.

I loved this production and cannot wait to see Joshua Henry in another show.
I'm heartbroken. The direction was flawed, but overall an incredibly beautiful show. I hope this cast finds work again very soon.
Just chiming in to say I was also one of the few who loved this production. I actually thought many of O'Brien's choices were very smart, and even fixed some of the inherent problems with the show.
I'm not here to have an argument about it. I just wanted to add my voice to the small group of yay-sayers.

Isn't this post kind of a paean to toxic inanity?

When I first read this thread, I thought the closing was August 16. My heart fluttered, because I plan on seeing this August 29. I know nothing about the show, so really won't know where they made cuts and changes. I'm just going in with an open mind with seeing a classic show revived and hoping that all of the original cast are in for my performance. That in it self will bring a smile to my face. Plus a decent rush seat.

I liked the show, particularly the cast who overcame questionable direction. Sad to see it close but not shocked. I wonder if Beautiful or Waitress could lure Jessie Mueller back for a closing run in a couple months

I’m guessing the Dreamgirls London transfer will announce their plans within the week to return to their original home!!
This was without a doubt the most amateur thing I have ever seen on a Broadway stage. I’m not surprised it’s closing. I look forward to seeing what the talented cast will do next.

Ameture really is the best word for the production.
It looked like a community theatre won some concert where they could produce Carousel and a Broadway Cast would come in play all the roles. The direction/set/lighting/costumes/concept all screamed community theatre.

I'm sad this is closing, simply of its importance in this day and age with the beautiful score contrasting the awful story. Can't really comment on the direction as I haven't seen any other productions, but I was in awe when I saw it.
I last saw this production on Saturday evening, July 14th. The front and rear mezzanines were quite empty. I knew then the run of this show was questionable.

This exactly.
This was our second favorite show of the 6 that we saw during our last NYC trip (in case you’re wondering, Angels in America was our favorite). Count me as one that loved this more than most here. Sad to see it go.
