Who's paying for this? I haven't seen/heard anything about any producers attached to this (though I imagine if Gaga came out and publicly said she wanted to do Funny Girl on Broadway the money wold materialize very quickly).
This continues to seem like wishful thinking on Rosie's part, possibly to use this as some sort of comeback vehicle.
I had Rachel Shukert on my Barbra podcast 'Hello, Gorgeous' and we talked about a Funny Girl revival and I brought up Jessie Mueller because she's always been my first choice. But Rachel said no because she isn't Jewish and thinks that's essential for whoever plays the role in terms of identity of the character and story. After considering that, I think she's may be right.
I'd go for a George C. Wolfe directed Funny Girl with Jessie Mueller, Bobby Cannavale, and Rosie O'Donnell, produced by Scott Rudin. Set by Santo Loquasto and costumes by Catherine Zuber and new orchestrations by Larry Hochman.
I use to think "YASSSSS" to Mueller, but now that I think about, is she funny? I know she'd be great, but would she really make this a must-see kind of thing? Not sure. But with Gaga's Vegas residency happening, I don't see her doing Broadway for awhile. Seems odd to agree to do a Vegas residency when you've got a hot movie coming out and have so many projects probably being presented to you.
Oh no, monetarily, yes, makes sense, but looking at the Vegas people... Seems like she's settling.. Especially since this movie was on the horizon, etc.
Keep in mind thst Gaga suffers from chronic pain. Touring has become too much for her, it seems. Vegas makes sense if she wants to continue performing her music without the strain of touring the world. The residency is two years but has long breaks between shows. She will have time to promote a new album or even film a movie.
Let's cast her in every new production then we won't have to ever dream cast again--and pray that that Rosie person is barred from every stage door/radio and TV station for ever!
I know I’m in the minority here, but I hope Gaga stays far, far away from Broadway at least in any of the revivals mentioned so far. I don’t see her as Eva Persin or Fanny Brice or Elphaba (the Wicked movie) or Ursula (the live tv The Little Mermaid). Like Madonna (who I dearly love), she does best when she is playing versions of herself. Of course, as a former Gaga fan who just started not feeling like her music spoke to me about five years ago, I haven’t even managed to get to a theater to see A Star is Born. (Of course, until Oscar season hits, I rarely go to the movies as I travel so much for work that if I wait a few months I can watch almost any movie for free on my flight). So maybe the movie will change my mind about Broadway Gaga or at least Gaga in a revival. I doubt it though. If she does come to Broadway, I think it’d be better if it was in a new musical written especially for her. But with her health issues, I doubt she’ll ever do it.
Looking forward to seeing the movie. In November 2019, I will be in Las Vegas to run the "Rock N Roll Strip at Night" Half Marathon. I have a ticket to see Gaga's Park Theater residency show while I'm there, and REALLY looking forward to it. Gonna be a great weekend. And should she do Broadway, this 71-year-old guy will fly cross-country to see her. I mean, after all, she's LADY GAGA !!
Sonia Friedman recently filed "Sadie, Sadie NY Limited Partnership," referencing the song from the show, so it seems like she is still definitely working on this.
I believe the London production was also an entirely white creative and design team, and only one woman (I'll be charitable and include Isobel Lennart for two women out of the 15.) I hope there are some changes to the team to make it more diverse.
