Genuinely curious, how would requiring electricians to turn a switch off incur additional costs for the theatre owners? Don’t they already have a set salary?

Sorry to be morose - the loss of these legends is meaningful and I don’t mean to diminish it - but we're at the beginning of a couple of decades of many important theatre people passing on. Maybe it should be just one theatre that gets dimmed each time, and everyone can gather on the sidewalk(s) outside of it.
Petitioning and slamming the League to dim multiples each time won't be emotionally sustainable, and they sure will continue to resist the expense as it grows and grows in frequency.
And this is the sort of sh*t being posted in the comments for the petition (ironic that the guy's name is "Christian"!

This man loved theatre and said community probably more than his own life. This is f*cking disgusting and the theatre owners should be ashamed. F*ck every single one of you. Dim your f*cking lights. No one gives a damn if Union electricians are “so expensive” DIM THE LIGHTS FOR THIS MAN WHO WAS THE LIGHT OF OUR LIVES AND THE SUNSHINE THAT MADE THE THEATRE COMMUNITY SMILE‼️‼️

I'm all for limiting to a single theatre (ideally wherever they had their first or last Broadway appearance) if people are going to scream about a voluntary light-dimming by the entities that own those venues. I suspect the "one from each landlord" business stems from each owner wanting to have a stake in this, but confining it to the theatres where that person actually worked would also be an elegant solution (which, in the case of Creel, would be 7 houses because he worked at the Marquis twice).
As I said above: If you have a problem with this, channel it into advocacy and electing progressive officials and fighting for queer and trans rights.
As I also said above, there must be a publicized standardization of this practice based on pedigree and fact –– and with involvement of the House Electricians and all of the Broadway unions & guilds. Can't just coast on vibes or the loudness of social media. That Michael McGrath doesn't get a dimming but Adrian Bailey does illustrates the blatant need for a concrete system. (To speak only of performers and not of offstage personnel who had an equal or greater impact on our industry.)
"West End theatres to dim lights for Gavin Creel" by The Stage's Matthew Hemley - "The Society of London Theatre has confirmed to The Stage that the Adelphi, where Creel performed in Waitress, as well as the Prince of Wales, where he starred in The Book of Mormon, the Prince Edward - where he appeared in Mary Poppins - and the Gielgud, where he was part of Hair, will all dim their lights in his honour."
There has got to be some sort of permanent solution to this than the constant push and pull momentary honor and I feel like after this particular situation with all 3 of them pass concurrently and their "positions" in Broadway hierarchy being so vastly different that The Broadway League may actually move to a permanent solution that is not dimming lights.
Perhaps, if all theater owners agreed, there could be a quarterly dimming for any members of the Broadway community who had passed in the last 90 days, whether a performer or backstage worker. Those theaters with the electronic marquees could run the names/pix of these remembered, similar to the “In Memoriam” segments on award programs. This way, all contributors would be respectfully recognized, and the dimmings could be scheduled.
I don't know if everyone knew, but there is a recording of "She Loves Me" on Broadway HD. I started a free trial of it through my Amazon Prime account just to see Gavin in it. It was very bittersweet to see him.
