I was scrolling through my phone when the news popped up and I just froze. For a few moments I couldn't process what I was reading. I'm just numb. GC was such a wonderful performer whose very presence on the stage was a privilege to behold. I first saw him in "Millie" and last in "ITW." One of the nicer things about being older is seeing young actors just starting out blossom into established performers. It's devastating to read of GC's passing because he was robbed of giving us so much more to love. RIP.

Gavin Creel was an artist who had just transitioned from reliable player to genuine star, and I was so ready to hear his work as a composer and performer blossom. I was lucky enough to see him in four of his roles over the years (Hair, She Loves Me, Book of Mormon and Into the Woods) and each time he just shone on stage. His work in Into the Woods was an unforgettable act of scene-stealing, the kind of once-in-a-lifetime role reinvention that you don't know is possible until you see it done so well. F*ck cancer, and let's lift up the community today. This guy was such a light."
I wish he had won another Tony that year. The fact that he wasn’t nominated felt shameful at the time, and even worse now. He had the voice of an angel, but he never coasted by on it. There was so much more to Gavin, as proven by his pure comedic genius in that part. He just seemed destined to get better and better at his craft as he aged. I can’t think of the last time a Broadway actor’s passing has left me sobbing like this. F*CK cancer.
"You can't overrate Bernadette Peters. She is such a genius. There's a moment in "Too Many Mornings" and Bernadette doing 'I wore green the last time' - It's a voice that is just already given up - it is so sorrowful. Tragic. You can see from that moment the show is going to be headed into such dark territory and it hinges on this tiny throwaway moment of the voice." - Ben Brantley (2022)
"Bernadette's whole, stunning performance [as Rose in Gypsy] galvanized the actors capable of letting loose with her. Bernadette's Rose did take its rightful place, but too late, and unseen by too many who should have seen it" Arthur Laurents (2009)
"Sondheim's own favorite star performances? [Bernadette] Peters in ''Sunday in the Park,'' Lansbury in ''Sweeney Todd'' and ''obviously, Ethel was thrilling in 'Gypsy.'' Nytimes, 2000
I saw him so many times on Broadway from Millie on. I am heartsick and I think for only the second time in my life I am crying that a celebrity that I did not know has passed away.
I am in total shock. What an absolute tragedy and huge loss for the Broadway community and for audiences who will no longer get to enjoy his immense talent. I feel so incredibly grateful that I was able to see Gavin in She Loves Me, Hello Dolly, and Into the Woods. Being in the same room with that glorious voice always gave me chills and his presence was so warm, bright, and infectious. A true Broadway star.
Tell whatever music service you use to "Play Gavin Creel". Apple Music has served up a nice mix of his many cast album appearances and solo album work. Also -- BroadwayHD has "She Loves Me" available to stream (or did last I looked.)
I was never fortunate enough to meet Gavin Creel, just a fan.
My daughter and I saw him three times in Hello, Dolly! and once in She Loves Me.
I agree with the person who said, after Gavin won the Tony for Dolly, that the hairdresser for that show should get an award for styling his front curl. Yeah, it was that cute and sexy.
I didn't have the good fortune to see him perform in person. But over the past several years, I've watched many videos that featured Mr. Creel. And this morning, I watched several more (especially from Dolly). A real talent to be missed.
Oh, this one hurts. Gavin was an inspiration. I am so sad for his friends, his family, and the stages he should have graced for years to come. Rest in peace, Gavin.
As someone who's a big fan for the show HAIR, his performance as Claude in the revival shook me. Utterly bewildered that he's gone. Way, way too young.
A Chorus Line revival played its final Broadway performance on August 17, 2008. The tour played its final performance on August 21, 2011. A new non-equity tour started in October 2012 played its final performance on March 23, 2013. Another non-equity tour launched on January 20, 2018. The tour ended its US run in Kansas City and then toured throughout Japan August & September 2018.
He seemed genuinely happy to be on the stage at every performance I was fortunate to see. There wasn’t a moment he appeared bored or otherwise engaged. I hope he truly felt the joy he brought to the community he so clearly loved.
I’m devastated to see this news. I had the chance to meet him and chat for a while after a performance of Dolly and he was just so incredibly kind. His performances were always just so joyous and charming. He will definitely be missed.
This is so sad. So much life to live and so many more great performances to give. In addition to being a brilliant performer, he truly seemed like one of Broadway's nicest individuals.
