While the responses in this thread have been largely positive I've noticed that the number of responses from those who have seen it are fewer for this first week than they were for, say, Some like It Hot, Shucked, New York, New York etc. which got me to wonder about the composition of the audience."
That’s a good observation. I know several friends are waiting to see it in July/August when Lea Salonga is performing."
That IS a keen observation. I'd like to here responses to this too.
So my husband and I are the kid of people who don't enjoy dancing in public - are we going to feel super out of place if/when we see this? Is there even standing/dancing in the mezz or are the folks up there just watching like a typical broadway show?

Well you definitely cant be downstairs on the dance floor but re the mezz, they make this as difficult as possible, encouraging you to get up and dance 2-3 times. I find that sorta "come on! join this forced enthusiasm immediately on our say so!" totally insufferable. That said, you dont have to... and in the mezz theres no one to force you.
As for the makeup of the audience, you actually get to "meet" some audience members from the dance floor via video and last night it was a v diverse mix, I thought? Where I was sitting in mezz, we were sandwiched between some enthusiastic Bway-fan tourists and some enthusiastic excited Filipino Americans. I did see some obviously-not-from-NY and obviously-didnt-expect-this folks in the mezz who seemed completely bewildered to be there.
The audience demographic to me was extremely traditional, and like Pipinghot I was very happy to notice a larger presence of Filipino & AAPI audience members.
I do know they emailed people who bought Tdf for this weekend and asked if it was ok to stand on the floor, so I think they’re trying to make it feel more hip.
Since the show is opening so close to the Tonys and has no big star or cast members with huge fan followings, I’m not surprised of the quiet welcome. That, plus the initial high ticket price that I imagine will be reduced shortly.

I always get the impression that most TDF members are older. I think they underestimated how many people want to take part or stand through a show. They should have made those tickets cheaper, or reach out to younger audiences at schools etc with discounts for those tickets. Of course that requires students to be available, so they sorta screwed the pooch by opening in the Summer when all the Unis are out.
This should have been something like Six where everyone is clamoring for tickets . Somewhere the marketing has failed.
Caught this yesterday afternoon through TDF (standing locations). The show is truly spectacular and something incredibly special that needs to be seen to be fully understood and appreciated. However, the uphill battle this show is going to face is that it's impossible to really describe the show which is going to make the marketing team's job very difficult. How do you sell a show like this? It's a brand new musical with no star.
While I wasn't initially thrilled with the idea of standing on a dance floor for 90 minutes, I have to say that it was actually a REALLY cool experience. The crowd control was absolutely excellent yesterday - I do NOT envy the people in the pink jumpsuits that have to usher the crowd around. They did a great job of keeping things and the crowd moving along without ever being aggressive or distracting, though.
I knew nothing about the history this show covers going in. It covers a lot, and there are many intense moments. I didn't find the show to glorify Imelda Marcos in any way - I think it really did a great job of showing just how terrible her and her husband were. It's definitely a harsher portrayal of a female politician than Evita was in my opinion.
The show is a technical marvel that is a feast for the senses. Alex Timbers has really outdone himself here. There are so many BEAUTIFUL moments that are just jaw-dropping. The transformation of the Broadway Theatre is truly quite remarkable. The entire cast is great - while the show is only 90 minutes, I can't imagine the amount of stamina required to perform in a show of this nature.
I really loved this, and I want nothing more than for this to be a big fat hit, but it has a tough road ahead between marketing the show and the summer opening. I really wish it the absolute best, though. This is the kind of show that SHOULD be on Broadway.

This sounds lovely and looks gorgeous. I think the fact that more shows are moving towards Sunday night shows and eliminating the Wednesday matinee is a good move for this show. I think the 6:30/5:30 pm shows will be extremely popular.
Lots of comparisons here between Evita Peron and Imelda Marcos and I understand that this is also a comparison between musicals. But Evita Peron was on the United States' enemies list whereas Imelda Marcos was a client of the United States and did its bidding in all things military and economic.
It's not like the Marcos' atrocities came out of their own Greek tragedy hubris. The atrocities were ways of keeping their people in line with the aims of the United States.
I noticed on the website that there is an Imelda Marcos alternate. Does anyone have any idea on when the alternate will perform? Is it a Moulin Rouge deal where the alternate performs once a week? Is it a SIX type deal where it’s a bit of a funkier contract? Has the alternate performed yet?

I’m excited about the 1pm performance of a :90 show as it leaves time for me to work in a 3pm and (hopefully) evening show as well. Try to squeeze in as many as possible on three night trips.
Set and sound fantastic. Seemed a bit cringey -cheese factor at times. The understudy playing Imelda was maybe having a bad night but seemed nervous and pitchy, and just seemed miscast. It's the main role and needed a stronger performance. Otherwise it's fun and does a good job telling the real life story. Don't go with high expectations
I disagree. I went tonight and the people on the floor were being directed around the moving stage constantly and looked like sheep. I didn't get the sense they were having more fun. I was happy to sit and watch
Jaygee was a disappointment. Never seemed to fill this role and was the weakest performance in the show I saw. Maybe she was nervous, because was pitchy and just wasn't strong enough to portray such a big persona
Surprising to hear about Jaygee as she's been playing this part for a decade, including as the full-time lead after Ruthie left. Maybe just an off night?
I received an email from TDF that the Wednesday, July 5th matinee is cancelled and that I would be refunded. On the other board people are discussing exchanging their tickets and having to pay a higher price for the section they were originally in. My question, which hasn’t been addressed is- why was it cancelled? Anybody know? I’m just curious. No reason was given by TDF. Thanks.
Yikes, just yesterday, i was about to drop a load of cash to that very performance thru tdf! (Hotel, train, etc.)
That being said, I've nothing about why.
If we're not having fun, then why are we doing it?
These are DISCUSSION boards, not mutual admiration boards. Discussion only occurs when we are willing to hear what others are thinking, regardless of whether it is alignment to our own thoughts.

I've seen Ruthie and Jaygee perform Imelda back at Public Theater and both were amazing. I wasn't there last night but am definitely coming back if they have scheduled performance for Jaygee to perform as the Imelda alternate.
I was there last night having seen the show at the public and not in any other iteration since, and boy its filling the theater beautifully even in the mid/rear mezz.
That said Jaygee I have to say was not up the challenge. I'm guessing she had no notice before going on, but nearly every note she really seemed to struggle with. I am going back in a few weeks and hope to see Arielle tackle the part, but right now, boy did I miss Ruthie!
