my point was more about celia statement which comes now once she has a plum star trek gig on the table versus two years ago when we were having these conversations initially
this keeps getting worse. However, this isn't making the news unless you follow Broadway closely, so does this really effect this show?
A Chorus Line revival played its final Broadway performance on August 17, 2008. The tour played its final performance on August 21, 2011. A new non-equity tour started in October 2012 played its final performance on March 23, 2013. Another non-equity tour launched on January 20, 2018. The tour ended its US run in Kansas City and then toured throughout Japan August & September 2018.

Believe me, this WILL make the news. This whole saga is TMZ-worthy at the very least. However, that won't be the reason the show will announce a closing real soon. Ticket sales are probably bad for this show (among many others) because many ticket buyers are not ready to sit in crowded theaters again, not to mention international travel bans are in the way as well.
January closing, (as my man Charles Barkley would say) GUARANTEED.
This show has been a hot mess from the get go. It’s days are numbered. No one was even waiting for this thing to reopen except the stans, and now they are all mad and boycotting.
Put a fork in this.
"The sexual energy between the mother and son really concerns me!"-random woman behind me at Next to Normal
"I want to meet him after and bang him!"-random woman who exposed her breasts at Rock of Ages, referring to James Carpinello
So let's continue our speculation on what will take up residence at the Broadhurst in the spring. I suggested Sing Street, although a slightly smaller space might be needed for a show like that.

I would guess maybe Funny Girl, but I suspect they'll announce a theater before JLP announces closure.
As much as I despise this show, I don't think it's quite accurate to say that it's alienated its only audience. Pre-pandemic, the show was pulling in really solid numbers at the box office - and we've seen from shows like Lightning Thief, Be More Chill, etc. that a passionate young fan base of Broadway stans is NOT enough to gross 900k-1M+ for 4 months.
Lest we forget that there's a pretty big name attached to the show - Alanis Morissette - who has a solid audience among older millennials with nostalgia for the 90s. We have to assume that Alanis Morissette fans were pulling some weight at the box office week after week.
How much will those fans be aware of controversies like this? I can't personally say, as I don't know how much crossover there is between Alanis Morissette fans and Broadway fans. I'm sure there's some, but enough to totally tank the box office? I'm not so sure.
Not to mention, if it gets good press on the Tonys, that could boost sales - especially if they (and I hate that I have to type these words) win some of the significant awards like (dear lord)...best book....
Tonys, schmonys. The awards tomorrow will easily be the lowest-rated in history, so even if the cast gives their best ever performance, no one will really care. It also has no chance of beating “Moulin Rouge!” for the Best Mickey Mouse Musical prize.
^yeah, you're probably right (I hope so, anyway), but then there's still everything else I said in my post.
You may also be right that all of this controversy PLUS the post-pandemic slump may end up being the fatal combination. But I think it's more up in the air than you think, given what we can glean about the pre-pandemic audience.
This is one of a number of shows the reopening of which cannot be explained without reference to the substantial taxpayer money that has distorted the financial calculations. To be blunt, that money is not available to the producers without reopening, and reopening provides a significant cash flow to the producers, general managers, etc., who receive payments without regard to profit. When funds dry up, they will close. Will they limp to the holidays? I don't know. Will the "controversies" cause the demise? Unlikely. Hot mess is one way to describe it. Train wreck would be another.
FWIW I agree that the Tonys will be even less of a blip on the radar screen than usual such that the likelihood of a Tony bounce seems very remote. I do have one question. There is a reference to the young demographic for shows like BMC and TLT. Is that really in play here? I would not have thought so, but I confess I have not paid much attention to this show since I walked out of the theatre the night I saw it.
Honestly, I couldn’t care less what happens to this show. What i DO worry about though, is any of this backlash rubbing off on Alanis. And even though she’s not involved in the production like that, I don’t put it past any of the diehard fans/critics to try and put some of the blame on her.

I was the one who mentioned those other shows, and if you note the context in which I said that, my point was that the show's box office numbers were NOT being fueled primarily by that young demographic, because the grosses were too high for that to be the case.
But if your question is: "DOES this show have a base of passionate young fans?" Yes, it does. Or rather, it did before these controversies.
but if it does, i can't conceive of someone who wanted to see The Alanis Morrissette Show reading that an actor alleges she wasn't treated kindly by her stage manager years ago and saying "nevermind! i won't support a show where someone was once mean to someone else!"
i'm all for incentivizing kind and respectful behavior backstage at theaters just as i think the fry girl at Burger King and the nurse at Cornell and the banker at Chase should be spared from what is alleged to have occurred here. thinking that the fact this isn't the case will turn people away from buying tickets to this show is to live in a fantasy universe
I'm confused by "all this controversy" wasn't it just one ensemble member? Like, I get it. I've had terrible bosses. But this doesn't seem to be in any way shape or form a "cancel" moment.
And, I don't like this show (terrible book, terrible design, terrible direction), but facts are facts, and it was doing VERY well before the pandemic.
@JBroadway I did note the context; I was just questioning if she had that demo in her fan base to begin with. My Alanis consciousness kinda ended before they would have been born lol

It's currently on NBC News, NY Daily News, The Daily Beast, and Yahoo (although technically Yahoo is a reprint of Deadline's story). What are y'all counting as mainstream press?
@RippedMan - this controversy is coming right off the heels of another controversy centering round a character's gender identity. That's what's meant by "all this controversy"
@Hogan - I don't actually know if Morissette herself has a lot of teenage fans. But the musical had and/or has a passionate young fanbase. They likely weren't born when Morisette was at the height of her fame, but they seemed to respond to the show itself.
I saw the show and don't understand any controversy around the character's gender identity? Why does everything have to be so spelled out all the time? This show has a lot of issues, but that's not one of them.
Whether you understand the controversy or not... there was one. And now there's another one. Certainly you can say the controversies are dumb or don't have merit... I don't think saying the show didn't have back to back controversies is a claim you can successfully make.

Adding Vulture, Playbill, People, etc. So, it clearly has. Hopefully you can admit you were completely wrong.

Have you looking into what the controversy was actually about, or are you just going based off your memory of seeing the show? Might be worth doing the former before you reach a conclusion, especially because this particular controversy specifically had to do with previous versions of the show and how it changed over time.
If you have actually looked into it, my apologies - but based on your wording it seemed like you hadn't.
