*sigh* Is this necessary?? Why not just release a proshot. A movie musical of a musical of a movie based on a book is just too much.

Why not both? I will say I am looking forward to the film version of Matilda, which is a musical based on a book that was also a very popular movie. But I’d also love if there was a pro-shot of the stage show… I’m also looking forward to the film version of Billy Elliot (if it actually gets made) and that is a musical based on a film that also has a pro-shot recording. So I don’t have a problem at all with having any musical being done as a film musical as long as investors and studios are willing to put up the money for us to continue getting movie musicals at all.

It’s just too much in my opinion.

I don't know why, but a movie adaptation of a musical adaptation of a movie is just one step too far. (I don't count Everybody's Talking About Jamie or other documentary starts.)
Hairspray and Sweeney Todd would like to have a word.
Don't care to see it? Cool! Problem solved.
Little Shop of Horrors (1986) and Hairspray (2007) are both movies based on musicals based on movies, and they turned out pretty well. However, both of those titles were originally cult classics and did not have the same notoriety or enduring success as Mean Girls. I think the weirdness comes from the original Mean Girls film being SO iconic that making another film version seems wrong. Not to mention that unlike Little Shop and Hairspray, Mean Girls wasn’t all that great on stage to begin with.
Where my mind is at... this will be the second movie musical adaptation of a Casey Nihcolaw-directed show.

I know it's a bit overly hyperbolic, but my initial reaction to this was that I'd rather stab my eyes out with a fork than see this. The show itself was already an awful interpretation of a modern classic. Does it need to be bastardized further?

It's already such a tight breezily paced 90 minute or so classic.
The show itself felt like overkill on that let alone this.
Exactly. This is like adapting something through a schoolyard game of telephone. Who ever asked for this?
I’m always pro-adaptation, but this one feels set up for failure. I enjoyed the musical, but it often felt like a tribute and/or companion piece to the 2004 film. I question whether it can stand alone.
Olivia Rodrigo has to be in their casting shortlist I assume?
Olivia Rodrigo is young and very in touch with her audience. Gen Z to the bone, who are hyper sensitive to "cringe" adaptations. They may offer it to her, but I bet you $50 she would absolutely not take it.

The score is just so bad.
Tina Fey has become quite a cash grabber over the years. Because that's all this, it seems.
Filming will begin in the spring.

Jaquel Spivey is now the only reason I will be checking out this movie.

I am happy about that casting and Renee!
Hopefully this is only the first of many film roles for Jaquel
Is the musical set in college?
JAQUEL!
Yay! I'm so happy for him!
