Dreamgirls was my first Broadway show so I naturally have a soft spot for it, but I also saw Nine and I love all things Italian - - - and Fellini is one of my favorite directors so I was really torn when Nine won over Dreamgirls.
What? No mention of Contact -- the show with the weakest orchestra and orchestration, weakest song lyrics, and weakest book. Ooops, sorry, it didn't even have any of those things normally a big part of what makes a show a "winner".
OK, go into attack mode, Contact lovers. (By the way I LOVED Contact, a very clever and well done dance show). Just still scratching my head what made it a "Broadway musical" by the usual definitions.
I was the fifth post on this about Contact, and could NOT BELIEVE no one else had seconded
so thank you both for chiming in....i went to the show not knowing what it was except that it was
"the hottest musical on broadway"....i mean it was entertaining and nice to watch, but it was NOT a musical and the tony folks really screwed the pooch on this one!!!!!
2000s
contact over Aida which wasn't even nominated
the most galling thing is contact had NO SINGING-they danced to prerecorded music
Whether Contact is a "musical" or not, it is far from overrated. To me, it is a great theatrical event. (Well, I'm not crazy about the middle segment).
Whether you think another show should have won does not mean the winner is overrated. Even if you think Dreamgirls should have won over Nine or Matilda over Kinky Boots does not mean Nine nor Kinky Boots are "overrated". An "overrated" show is one that has recevied acclaim or accolades that you simply can't comprehend. So, Mr. Roxy will tell you that Book of Mormon is overrated. (and a few others may share Roxy's view). Some on here feel that way about Memphis - they just don't understand any love for that show. I don't understand the love for Big River, which, to me, was a terrible musical on its own merit. .
Anything based on a real event holds few surprises. Hell, one of the he few things I knew about Alexander Hamilton was the duel with Burr.
If we're not having fun, then why are we doing it?

I'm not looking at what they beat and if they deserved to win or not, that's sort of a different question in my mind. For example, I strongly believe Ragtime should have beaten The Lion King but I wouldn't call The Lion King overrated. I'm solely looking at the show from each decade I think is most overrated
1950s: Wonderful Town
1960s: Cabaret
1970s: None of the ones I know are overrated IMO, don't know much about some of the other winners
Realized I wasn't attending shows when a chorus line came out

I couldn't have been more underwhelmed when I left In the Heights. I thought it was a really good show, but it has one of the worst endings ever. It felt so unsatisfying to learn that Usnavi would just not be leaving. He spends the whole show wanting to visit the Dominican Republic, to see the land of his parents, to learn about the world outside of Washington Heights. But instead (in my opinion) he settles to just stay where he is. Yes things are different because Abuela is dead and he has lottery winnings, but that's not going to change much around him. I felt like I was taken from Point A to Point B to Point C back to Point A. I left exactly how I came in. That left a sour taste in my mouth, and the last impression is the one that sticks.
