I finally got to see Bernadette Peters this past Sunday, and so glad I did. What a natural for this role. You totally forget she's Bernadette Peters and honestly believe she's Dolly Levi. She struggled with her singing at times (especially "I Put My Hand In There"
where it sounded like she was trying to catch her breath at times, but by the end of Act 1, she was in full force - brought tears to my eyes when she sang 'Before The Parade Passes By'. At the end, when Horrace sings 'Hello Dolly' to her, you really believed they had fallen in love - there were tears and sniffles throughout the theater. What a memorable moment to treasure forever...so believable and tender. By the time of the final bows, you could feel the joy radiating from everyone in the cast (and Peters had tears in her eyes, as well).
As for the rest of the cast - Victor Garber was a pure delight. I think he was a little better than DHP. Gavin Creel - can he do anything wrong in this musical? My God, what a talent - so glad I caught his performance again. Same with Baldwin (and I liked the new Minnie better than the original one). As for Stemp, he was just magic, IMO.
So sad to see this show closing - if ever there was a musical which could make you forget the real world for a few hours, this is it....and boy do we need this today.
Thank you to everyone - especially you, qlobinal!!! - who recommended we all go to see Peters in the role (as I already saw Murphy, thanks to the advice here). Worth every penny.

Posted: 6/20/18 at 10:02amThe last two times I saw Bernadette (who I adore) in a show her singing was ragged in one or more songs. I hope she will get cast in plays if her voice continues to erode with age and time. Seeing Buckley in straight plays showcased her acting abilities, and I think Peters would excel even more.

Posted: 6/20/18 at 10:08amI saw it Saturday and thought she was in very bad vocal shape. She also lost it with laughter during the hat shop scene because she was cracking vocally so much . She is still charming and the audience loves her . The show is a little tired right now. Or maybe I just don’t need to see it again, BTW , Victor has grown so much in this role

I don't think Bernadette sounds any more ragged than Bette. Donna was able to sing the score with more ease than both of them because she's a full decade younger than both of them. I actually thought Bernadette sung the score wonderfully the night I saw it, but I think they should've raised the keys in a few songs because the current keys do not sit in Peters' sweet spot and are really at the bottom of her lower range, which would explain the cracking.
So sad to see this marvelous production go. It really should be running for years. Does anyone know why it's closing? Was it just to make room for Mockingbird?

I wasn’t comparing the two. She just really had a really rough time this past Saturday. You could tell she was frustrated with it as well.

I saw the show last Friday. There was definitely no cracking that night. Peters voice was strong and without the slight wobble Bette has these days. I did notice that both she and Bette take breaths in awkward places when they sing which chops up their phrasing sometimes.
Bernadette is hilarious and sexy. Loved Garber. I slightly prefer Bette but both are magnificent.

I too saw this show last Saturday night and Peters did crack a couple of times...this was my first time actually seeing Bernadette live in a musical...i have seen and heard almost every thing she has done either by CD or youtube...i Love Bernadette, but this role was not meant for her...she being more a classical Broadway singer...the mugging in the 2nd act was not good...right there i could see why Bette was so good in this role as she knows how to mug for the audience...i still enjoyed the performance of the rest of the cast...

I agree with both of the above statements. The show with Bernadette just never reached the same level of joy and exuberance as it did with Bette. I saw Bernadette twice, and I was pretty disappointed with her performance both times.

I haven’t heard of anyone being out tonight. The principals haven’t really missed, I know neither Bernadette or Victor have missed a show. And I haven’t heard any other principal missing in the past few months, besides when Gavin was out, but that was scheduled.
Have so much fun!!

Posted: 6/21/18 at 4:28pmSaw the show again last night and really had a great time. I thought Bernadette might’ve been sick but it sounds like she may have been not the strongest vocally at past shows. I saw her in her first month and now have seen her in her last month. Her voice wasn’t as good as the first time but her profmance is truly charming and she acts the role wonderfully. The show is just our delight and I was in a very close seat this time which really enhanced the experience. Really wish I could see Bette one last time. That last month is sure to be marvelous. Gavin and Kate are truly spectacular and I will make sure to see any project they are in. Charlie Stemp is wonderful. The new Minnie Fay has grown in the role, but Beanie still is my favorite. Go see this show if you haven’t. It may be the last time (or at least for a while) we get a grand production of this perfect show.

I get that was your experience...I'm curious how big a fan are you of Bette compared to Bernadette? I must admit, I had the opposite experience. While it was great watching Bette in the role and enjoying this production for the first time - in comparison to Bernadette's first week I thought Bette was rather boring in comparison. But clearly I am a much bigger fan of Bernadette than Bette in general.
Thank you LesWickedly for your thoughts - I was curious to know how the performance might have changed (or not) since earlier in the run. There is only a couple more weeks to go
!!

qolbinau; Besides Bernadette's vocal challenges lately; the makeup of the audience has changed. It is a packaged tourist crowd . The enthusiasm is just not the same. And with this musical production in particular; the audience has a huge part in the success of the evening. I love Bernadette by the way. And have seen it a few times with her. But this particular production was conceived for Bette. And for me ( and opinions are like you know what) .. neither of the two other Dolly's have made it as joyful as she has. Not to say I didn't love Donna or Bernadette in it. So grateful to have been able to see them all.

Saw the Tuesday matinee today and was just in awe. It was my second time and I loved it even more than my first visit. Bernadette is just such a gift and I was on the edge of my seat the entire time. Victor has definitely grown as Horace and Bernadette kept cracking him up-particularly during the downstage center dinner with the beets and dumplings, which was so charming and the audience ate it up.
Gavin and Charlie are an amazing duo and so mesmerizing. Gavin is in great voice and he really owns the stage like an old pro now and lives in the part, as before I definitely saw the "acting."
Amanda LaMotte was on for Minnie Faye and she absolutely killed it. She made so much more of the role than when I saw it with Molly Griggs and got quite a good buzz in the audience. Hopefully we see her in more roles soon.
This production is so special and I feel lucky to have gotten to see it with Bernadette twice.

I tried to watch but they had the Trump/May press conference which ran until around 9.40, then they showed a food segment and a contest on Kelly, then the schedule moved onto the next programme?
Do you think they will show the interviews tomorrow or did I miss it?

Posted: 7/13/18 at 11:03amI don’t follow the Kelly and Ryan Facebook page, but maybe they’ll post it there. Another idea might be You Tube. I know I was able to share Madonna’s last appearance on K & R with a fellow Madonna fan and friend who lives in Canada via You Tube clips.

I have to wonder: after this production closes and goes out on the road, dear Dollypop, where do you go from here? You gonna see it a few times on the road with Betty?
