Voice was fine. No glitches. Comedy was right on and she was slyly sexy. She made me cry a few times, not just from the script emotion, but because it was Bernadette up there doing this classic role - so well and entertainingly.
Enjoyed it much more than with Midler and Murphy. She creates a joy up there that transfers to the rest of the cast. The ensemble was tight and loose and funny and fierce. Even that interminable waiters gallop finally landed.
Stemp soared as did Baldwin. Creel not so much, but he did no harm. Garber cant beat Pierce, but he was also endearing.

I wonder how they will ‘celebrate’ Bernadette Peters in her final performance? That last show, that last curtain call, that last bow? I can only imagine the roaring, deafening applause and standing ovation from the audience, and it makes me joyous in my heart that I at least got to see her once.
As Dolly Levi she brought a huge smile to my face and made me laugh like I hadn’t in years. Someone mentioned in another thread her chasing the dumplings around the plate, which had me cracking up so hard it brought streams of tears to my eyes.
I can’t wait to see what they do! I expect the whole show to just be deafening applause, and she deserves every second! It is an amazing joy to watch her perform!

Bernadette Peters was, and is, simply amazing."
Im thinking we just watch the show without ever sitting. Just one loooonnng 2 and a half hour standing ovation.

Seeing it again on Sunday."
I have to wonder: after this production closes and goes out on the road, dear Dollypop, where doyou go from here? You gonna see it a few times on the road with Betty?"
I don't even want to think of it. Life without HELLO, DOLLY! is no life at all.
Welp. Call me a total Broadway nerve but I literally dreamt about being at the show today. For some reason I was in the theatre building but out of the room and kept fearing I would miss the 'big number.' So.. I just bit the bullet and splurged on plane tickets and a snagged an Orchestra Left seat Row E four seats in for $180. I've never seen Bernadette and it promises to be an incredible afternoon (also have tix to Bette and the production's last show). Already justifying it in my head (I don't have kids, etc. etc.). The anticipation of seeing her come down that staircase is enough for me!
Can't wait. Literally heading to the airport soon. For those who are also going... yahoo!!! :)
"You can't overrate Bernadette Peters. She is such a genius. There's a moment in "Too Many Mornings" and Bernadette doing 'I wore green the last time' - It's a voice that is just already given up - it is so sorrowful. Tragic. You can see from that moment the show is going to be headed into such dark territory and it hinges on this tiny throwaway moment of the voice." - Ben Brantley (2022)
"Bernadette's whole, stunning performance [as Rose in Gypsy] galvanized the actors capable of letting loose with her. Bernadette's Rose did take its rightful place, but too late, and unseen by too many who should have seen it" Arthur Laurents (2009)
"Sondheim's own favorite star performances? [Bernadette] Peters in ''Sunday in the Park,'' Lansbury in ''Sweeney Todd'' and ''obviously, Ethel was thrilling in 'Gypsy.'' Nytimes, 2000
Not many seats left(less than 20). Hopefully she gets a sellout & SRO is sold.
A Chorus Line revival played its final Broadway performance on August 17, 2008. The tour played its final performance on August 21, 2011. A new non-equity tour started in October 2012 played its final performance on March 23, 2013. Another non-equity tour launched on January 20, 2018. The tour ended its US run in Kansas City and then toured throughout Japan August & September 2018.
Maybe it’s currently watching Love, Simon on my work flight to Chicago, but I’m emotional thinking about those lucky enough to see Bernadette’s final performance today.
My flight to NYC got cancelled. Won’t make show. Devastated but would find some joy knowing ticket didn’t go to waste. If you’re in NYC and can make it to Shubert by 3, DM me and you can have my ticket for free (yes, free!). I’ll call box office and let them know your name. It’s a will call ticket. I live out of town and can’t exchange.
It really did feel special. Up in the cheap seats, there were several standing ovations. Three in the title song alone (entrance, inexplicable but sincere mid-number, and at the actual end of the song). Bernadette did get Victor to break during dinner with some well-timed adlibbing. All in all, a terrific afternoon. Besides the electrified audience, the only nod to it being her last performance was a big bouquet of flowers handed off near the end of the curtain call.
Today made me even more excited for the sheer electricity that will bring down the house at the final performance. The balcony was definitely filled with people who love this production and it was magic just to be there. I thought this was Bernadette’s best performance out of the 4 times I’ve seen her. Before the Parade Passes By was my personal highlight of the day. I do wish there had been more to acknowledge them at curtain call, but as mentioned above ever moment today felt special.
