Lupone has zero f*cks to give about Andrew Lloyd Webber and any/all of this works.

The problem with this is that it is not true. Her premise is that audiences are fixed and non-fungible. But they are not. With a lower nut, the show may well be viable in reliance on the same busloads on which it relied pre-closing announcement. Cf. Chicago. Will the return be good enough for the new model they adopt? TBD. Will I want to see it? Probably not.

She does have a point.

It took the show closing for me to go see it because I had zero interest since, while beautiful, is a very crappy show.

Let it die and bring it back after ALW kicks it so we can maybe get some revisions and a new vision that doesn’t have him meddling

I do think the interest in Phantom will significantly wane between now and the time it "re"opens; the closing gave it a level of New Yorker interest that it hadn't had in 25 years, when most of its audience had been international & domestic tourists. This was its big moment. As with some other shows that have tried to return quickly, it might not ultimately have the staying power.

Of course, an artful and radically different approach could help it. But that's not what ALW or Cameron would ever dream of giving us in their lifetime.

As someone who didn't like PHANTOM, I agree with Patti, but as someone who has a deep and lon-lived love affair with another show, I understand the feelings of devotees of PHANTOM  and what they are going through right now. Seriously, it''s like you've lost your best friend and you're grieving. In this case it's best just to keep your mouth shut.

Given that ALW has just lost his son, why do you think it appropriate to make this nasty comment about the eventual passing of ALW himself?

"

At no point did I say I wished him dead -  I’m acknowledging the fact that there will likely not be any chance for some major creative overhauling for a very long time (after he passes), and so they should wait until then to bring it back

Patti is allowed to have her opinions and it's always fun to hear snark. Lord knows she went through it with Sunset Boulevard, so I'm not surprised she'd speak frankly about how little she cares for Phantom or ALW.

...but she's wrong. Sure, plenty of people have seen it, but plenty of people haven't. Heck people in NY still haven't seen it because they thought "it would always be there!" We've all heard that refrain from folks these last few days.

And people rewatch classic movies all the time don't they? Or discover them for the first time? So, how is that different from going to see Phantom, even though it opened 35 years ago?

Patti starred in Gypsy, which has been performed so many times any self-respecting theatre geek knows the score inside out and backwards. So? Are people not supposed to enjoy it anymore?

I think at the end of the day, Patti has her own ideas about how Broadway should work. Didn't she speak about "term limits"? Yeah.
