Okay, so I'm a giant whore. As much as I am not in favor of this revival, they would still make money off of me if a recording came out. I'll confess my dirtiness to my Rabbi promptly.
The argument about AVENUE Q not having an off-Broadway Cast Album had zero validity. That production was a TRANSFER. This production of RENT is a NEW production.
That being said...I do not think a cast album of the off-Broadway cast would be profitable. There is already the OBCR plus the movie soudtrack. No need for a third...UNLESS it is completely reorchestrated to warrant preservation.
"The Spectacle has, indeed, an emotional attraction of its own, but, of all the parts, it is the least artistic, and connected least with the art of poetry. For the power of Tragedy, we may be sure, is felt even apart from representation and actors. Besides, the production of spectacular effects depends more on the art of the stage machinist than on that of the poet."

Im dying to hear this cast if anyone would be willing to send me the "recording" it would make my entire month...please...I really need it its like needing air or water...
P.S. Im in the ensemble of RENT at a theater in my town so Im currently obsessed with all things RENT.
Are the changes to orchestration, such as they are, what was rumored? (Replacing all piano lines with guitars, a more American Idiot type sound.) Or is it the same thing with minor variations at best?
If the changes are substantial enough that it's a very different sound for the show, yes, by all means make a recording. (As much as I hate RENT Remixed, I wish there was an official recording available for its very difference. Alternate versions for any purpose, such as chorale, concerts, etc., are always welcome from a show.) If it's a stock production of Rent with tiny cosmetic differences that happens to be running at New World Stages, then don't expect to see it on iTunes any time soon.

While I'm not an expert either on orchestration or on Rent, the differences between the new production and what I hear on the OBCR aren't radical. There is definitely still a piano line.

There is an officially recorded concept album, that was professionally done in a studio that is floating around online, it is all also on Youtube somewhere!!
For the record, I would love a recording of this, the OBCR is a bad quality recording, and the cast dont sound good, especially Menzel who sounds off and flat even after studio processing! And I have spent the last few years trying to blank everything that I can from the Movie from my mind... I've finally achieved that and I am not gonna tarnish my success by listening to it all again!
There are no videos...yet. If you want to hear them, buy a ticket and go! Not sure if a recording is in the works. They are selling the OBCR at the merchandise stand.
To be fair.. albeit a LITTLE nitpicky... there wasn't a whole lot of "studio processing" (which I'm guessing is your version of saying pitch correction) in music before 1997. So by that argument it could be said that they weren't going for a spot/pitch-on rendition. Maybe they were more trying to capture the "one-take-and-done" mentality. I have heard tales of a few OBC members that really don't like the way it sounds to begin with.
Now if you were referencing the movie soundtrack and pitch correction.. sweet hell, it's EVERYWHERE on that album.
All that being said, I too am on the bandwagon of a live cast recording of this production.
anything you do let it come from you and it will be new.
A live recording of this production would be ideal. I still feel as if Rent doesn't yet have a cast album that fully captures the show's energy. The original is too raw, and the film soundtrack is too produced.
As much as I want this to happen, I doubt an online petition will make a significant impact...
With the signatures that are racking up...I'll round it to 100 each person would only need to be willing to pay about 2k per recording for it to break even. I'm thinking this is a go.
Let's even say that each signature represents THREE definite buyers...they can sell them at $666 each to break even. Sounds doable.
If we're not having fun, then why are we doing it?
