So there's a rumor going around that Steve Carell and Sarah Paulson will return to Broadway this fall in a flashy revival of Edward Albee's THE GOAT, OR WHO IS SYLVIA? which is widely considered one of if not "the most disturbing American play ever written." Paulson has actually called this play one of her dream shows and dream roles multiple times. we don't know who is directing it, but I'm very curious to hear what some of you think about this play getting a Broadway revival
That would be brilliant.
Can confirm this is happening.
Carell and Paulson will be but two figures spearheading the next big wave of A-list celebs in Broadway plays, just to name a few: Willem Dafoe, Ryan Reynolds, Keke Palmer, and Keanu Reeves + Alex Winter. (Nicolas Cage and Angela Bassett are also being wooed for productions.)
And I didn't even mention who'll be leading some of the new / running musicals yet.

Do we know who is directing The Goat or Who is Sylvia?

Don't quote me on this, but I heard Lila Neugebauer (with Seaview signed on as lead producer).

Remember when this person was pretending to have inside information about different shows closing, shows that are currently still running?

To be fair, Cage was rumored in Broadway Briefing last May (same source that revealed John Proctor, Andrew Scott’s Vanya among others).
The Reynolds rumor was posted on the other board by a reputable poster. Winter and Reeves have been confirmed. I’ve also seen Dafoe rumored.
Seaview makes sense as their model has been short run revivals with celebs.
Editing to add - I did not see these on TikTok but not sure if they originated there. Shouty has gotten plenty wrong or reasons wrong.
I love that the two thread rumors you posted were literally pulled from SweatyBallsack’s TikTok page.
Is Steve Carell right for this?

Like it or not he often has the scoop; it's natural that people would want to discuss it.

Absolutely.
Honestly can’t think of two current actors who are more natural spiritual successors to Bill Pullman and Mercedes Ruehl for these roles than Steve Carrell and Sarah Paulson. If this is true, I’m sat.

This is going to be great. Carrie Coon would have been a slam dunk as well.

Nice casting. It'll be interesting to see how this play has aged.

As good a choice and arguably better, but I think Sarah's interest brought this production to fruition.
I genuinely wonder if there will be celebrity fatigue after this season...at least fatigue from paying what are sure to be exorbitant prices. With that said, I'd never miss a chance to see The Goat, especially with Paulson.
Celebrities have been cast in Broadway (and off) productions forever. It’s not about them being cast, it’s which ones and for what reasons. There are true stage vets - like Paulson - who also happen to have crossover celebrity and return to theatre often. Carrell, of course, only recently made his Broadway debut; but from a comedy perspective, he’s also a stageborne performer.
Then, there are the people who are famous for working in film or tv - or simply for being famous, period - who have no grasp of working in stage and their mere presence isn’t enough to create compelling live stage work. Julia Roberts is the most obvious that comes to mind, for me, simply for the fervor her mere appearance in Three Days of Rain caused and how disappointed even ardent fans were in her ability to perform live.
And, of course, the ones in between who show up on stage for the first time and show a knack for it you’re happy to find they had in them.
All this to say, celebrities will always be on the stage and people will usually pay to see them. If they’re good, great; if they’re bad, they usually don’t return enough to make a big enough stink about.
Solid casting choices for one of my favorite plays! I will say I’ve always wanted a revival of The Goat starring Mary Louise Parker as Stevie, but Paulson is a great choice.
To this day The Goat, or Who is Sylvia plus The Pillowman and Jackie Sibblies Drury’s We are Proud to Present… are my favorite productions, play or musical, that I’ve ever directed. I hope this rumor is true because I’d love to see a first rate production again. I saw it with Sally Field as Stevie on Broadway when I was in HS and still remember it vividly.
This. Is. My. Favorite. Play. This cast works for me and I'm containing a bit of hysteria here.
