I think these are pretty fabulous choices. It'll be nice to see Kidman cut loose after the stellar, but heavy material she's been working on recently. Grande is playing Alyssa, which is a role that plays to her strengths. It's not like she's playing Emma.

This is so depressing. I'd have loved preserving the OBC on film! The fact that they went with names is their choice. That they chose such an uninspired group for this is unbelievably stupid.
I’m most upset about James Corden as Barry. Like, honestly? We have to watch Corden pretend to be gay, which is just going to be horrible. I wish Brooks Ashmanskas would’ve at least come over. He’s fantastic.
It does seem weird to me that since it's being developed by Ryan Murphy that he wouldn't cast a gay man to play a gay role. It shows a very gay-friendly and are generally cast accurately. With gay guys playing gay guys.
Wow what a star studded cast for a Netflix original. I’m hoping that Caitlin will continue as Emma since there was not an announcement for that role, but I doubt it.

Based on the Deadline announcement linked above, it appears that Ariana Grande and something called "Awkwafina" will be playing Alyssa and Emma. Blech. I'm glad I saw the Broadway production.

My initial instinct says that Corden lacks a certain pomposity that Barry needs in the earlier chunk of the show (a quality that Ashmanskas has perfected to great comedic effect over the years). Corden tends to read overly eager, desperate to please; whereas Barry has a world-weary, self-important "I'm better than this" attitude, at least at first. Streep hasn't done this kind of over-the-top in a bit (even in Mamma Mia, she's fairly emotionally grounded) and I almost wonder if she can pull off the steam-rolling vaingloriousness of DeeDee. Though, perhaps I should know better than to doubt Meryl.

Awkwafina is a rapper/actress who became famous after Crazy Rich Asians and Ocean's 8. It seems like she'll be playing the Josh Lamon publicist role who is a woman in this version. They're doing a casting search for an unknown for Emma.

Awkafina is a comedian/rapper is considered the next Tiffany Haddish. Shes been in Crazy Rich Asians and Ocean's 8. Grande is confirmed to be playing Alyssa. They are having a "nationwide" search for Emma, so Caitlin might still be in consideration.

All I want to know is whether she can hit and sustain that big money note like Beth Leavel. My guess is no.

I don’t get why some people are so upset about this casting (Twitter “stans” mostly.) Did people really think they would cast the OBC for this? I must admit I’ve only listened to The Prom once or twice, so i don’t have much of an opinion on the show as a whole, but come on. The show is not well-known outside of its fan base, and while it stars a bunch of well-known Broadway actors, none of those people are “names” outside of Broadway. I’m fine with this casting (save maybe for Corden, I’m a little burned out on him.) It will bring more people in to see the movie and expose the story to a larger audience.
God, the almighty and all-knowing, has misplaced a cup?
At first blush, I thought I was reading The Onion.
I just knew the OBC wouldn't be in the film version, but considering the major roles were written for the people who played them, it's still a bit disappointing.
I totally can't see the Ms. Sheldon character at all. I know Awkwafina is funny and all, but I think Ryan Murphy should have cast Billy Eichner as Sheldon.
I'm a little disappointed they aren't preserving the OBC because that's the version I was interested in seeing. Are they all agreeing to work for less than their usual salaries? Because I don't see how paying all those star salaries would be better than just paying the OBC. I guess it's a bunch of names that might do well if people are searching Netflix but I don't know how much they're pulling people into watching The Prom if they weren't interested to begin with.
