Unconfirmed by production, but Sasson Gabai (who originated the role of Tewfiq in the film) is apparently saying that he’ll be playing the role over the summer. Hmm.

That would make me return for a second time. He was simply fantastic in the film.

I think they'll still have them.
Has there ever been a case where the actor who did the film went on to do the stage adaptation? Would be very interesting to see that.

I don't know if this counts but the original actor who voiced Jafar in the cartoon Aladdin originated the role on Broadway

I love this play, and have seen it twice. I thought Shaloub was wonderful but not critical to the work's success. It is such an ensemble piece and all of the performers seem so suited to their parts. I will definitely see it again, with or without Shaloub.

Shalhoub was unbelievable and I hope he returns to the role, because the sympathy he generates is unmatched. But Gabai was brilliant in the film and it would be insanely cool to have him do this on Broadway. Kinda wish they got him for Shalhoub's break.
Any reports on Dariush Kashani, the new Tewfiq?

Totally forgot about that! But yeah that counts!

Lila Kedrova won an Oscar for playing Madame Hortense in Zorba the Greek and a Tony for the same role in the revival of Zorba.
^ And of course, the same revival had Anthony Quinn back playing Zorba onstage, after getting an Oscar nom for his performance in the film role.
Updated On: 3/4/18 at 09:16 AMI was in New York earlier this week and I have been putting off my review untill I arived back home. All I can say is wow. I decided to buy tickets to just see what all the hype was about. This production is amazing. This was just so good. The song “Answer me” made me tear up because of how beautiful it really was. The sets have not alot going on but I liked that because of it. This has to win best musical. What a amazing night in the theatre. Go see this if you havnt already!
Finally got to see this last week before Tony left.
A spellbinding well-crafted 90 min. musical with one of the most intoxicating scores by David Yazbek and impeccably staged by David Cromer.
Cast and musicians are perfect...the majestic Tony Shalhoub, the seductive Ari'el Stachel and the willowy Katrina Lenk is Mesmerizing!
All are TONY worthy. It will win Best Musical coupled with Katrina's most likely well deserved win!
My Favorite Musical this Season!
Really would appreciate any reports re: Kashani! Anyone seen?

Idk if someone has already mentioned this, but are there any featured actresses in the show who look good for a nomination? Or is it all just Katrina Lenk?

The supporting female roles aren't particularly meaty; I would be very surprised if any of them garnered a nomination.

I saw the show on Sunday. Not having seen Shaloub, I'm not in a position to make comparisons, but I was very moved by Kashani's performance. Initially, I read his Tewfiq's discomfiture as stiffness, but as we got to know him it all seemed part and parcel of a satisfying and subtly-drawn characterization. He had only been in the show for a few days, but there was no lack of magic in his scenes with the extraordinary Katrina Lenk.

I am going tonight! I have also seen Tony, so I will be able to compare it and post a review :)

I saw Kashani 3 days ago, and I thought he was wonderful. I enjoyed Shaloub's Tewfiq too, so I wouldn't make an argument for one being better. Kashani's Tewfiq started more aloof, but certainly not in a bad way. The pain of his son and wife's deaths seemed to be more raw for Kashani, which makes his goodnight to Haled especially moving. Kashani also appeared a touch younger, so the attraction between Dina and Tewfiq was also something different (in a good way).
