This isn't really accurate, in practice. That rule exists to prevent replacements and understudies from being eligible, it doesn't exist for situations like this. The committee would just make an official ruling to make an exception (which there's precedent for) - and they wouldn't even bat an eye to do so, as long as the voters/nominators get a chance to see the actor. The ruling would, in effect, be a mere formality. A quick "Yes. Next item on the agenda."

Basically every critic hated this with a passion it seems? That really sucks considering the talent involved. Interesting.

Neely O’Hara didn’t do Act 2 on opening night of “Tell Me, Darling ”. She was replaced by her understudy, I think. Or maybe a swing?

Well, Broadway doesn’t go for booze and dope.

i agree with you. I watched it this past weekend and was amazed by these actors! I'll admit though that I didn't know anything about the personal lives of Basquiat and Warhol before seeing this play.

Just a few months ago Jason Forbach went on for Brian D'Arcy James on Into the Woods' opening night...and I have no doubt James is the one who'll be eligible for Tony consideration.

I imagine the new opening night will be a somber occasion, with the rotten reviews already published.

3 stars from TimeOut, which interestingly finds Bettany and Warhol stronger than Pope and Basquiat, unlike many other reviews.
Paul Bettany and Jeremy Pope play Andy Warhol and Jean-Michel Basquiat in a sketchy biodrama.

I know they extended this by a week, but at this point, do they even try to reschedule the opening?
A Broadway transfer from the UK, that’s going to be made into a film next year, is basically hated by the critics. That first preview must have been a flash in the pan, because it was a captivating evening (at least for me and the ten other people around me, as we discussed at intermission). What a bummer.
Interesting miscalculation in many ways. Since we're talking about transfers from the UK, the David Hare play with Fiennes would've been logical for B'way, and this production, clearly, would've been better served by a smaller house Off-Broadway. Yet with about $200,000 last week, including subscribers, the reviews will make this a hard(er) sell. I feel bad for everyone involved. But that's true of many shows, for which January will be rough terrain indeed.
It seems curious that they made the decision to extend the show before the reviews came out. With the critical consensus seemingly middling to poor, what was the motivation for the extension?
Also, I just looked at tickets for the last week and much of the center orchestra is priced at $300, which seems a bold move for a relatively poorly-reviewed straight play.
Both shows today are cancelled.

TDF just informed me that my tickets for Friday evening have been refunded...
They probably don't return until December 16 at this point.

Just announced they’ll be back Monday December 26th
Oof, I'm supposed to see it on Tuesday - but my main reason for going is the main 2 actors. If either one of them is out, I'll probably switch dates. Any word at all on which actor it is? I'm assuming the actor in question won't be able to return until 10 days after testing positive, meaning the understudy will probably go on for those first few performances back.
I'm honestly shocked by the reviews. I was at a recent press performance and had a great time! I do admit that Act 1 is basically devoid of any dramatic tension, so it's really just about having fun with the actors until Act 2 (where the real meat of the story is. Second half is much better and more compelling than the first). Really loved Act 2 and what it brought out of these 2 talented performers.
Is it perfect? No. But it's hardly deserving of these reviews, which are some of the harshest of the season thus far. I feel like I watched something totally different from the critics.
JoeW4, they haven't announced which actor it was. But as I looked through my Playbill I noticed that Paul Bettany doesn't have an understudy, nor does Eric Jenson. Which is super bizarre. Pope and Rodriguez have one...but why only cover half your cast? So I would assume its Bettany and/or Jensen who are ill. If it was only Pope or Rodriguez then one would think they could rush on an understudy to save some of these performances.
Doesn’t AEA require all roles on Broadway be understudied unless it’s a big star? Maybe because MTC is a non-profit they don’t have to?
Surprised at how bad some of these reviews are. It may not be a great play, but its many great moments outshone its contrived ones. Pope and Bettany are both marvelous.

Every production works it differently, but it's not unheard of for a show to not rehearse understudies until the preview period is over and the show is open. I have heard of shows not contracting covers until after the show was open.

With reviews like this, the production may close soon despite the extension.
