If you’re seeing Sherie tonight, I’m curious to know if she has her own playbill with her above the title or if it’s just an understudy slip.

Inception, do you still have that Queen of Versailles ticket you didn’t use?  I’d love to have it

It doesn’t belong to you, Flash, and in case you didn’t notice, he said he wouldn’t give it to you and I don’t blame him.

I love the show and would love to see it again.  Why not help me out so I can save some cash? It’s Thanksgiving after all

Sherie Rene Scott is a bonafide Broadway star. Tonight felt like she finally got her moment to shine as the true leading lady she is, if only for a night.

I can’t wait to tell you more.

I'm definitely curious to hear if her performance changed the overall tone of the piece in any way.

Just looking at the curtain call footage reveals a different take. She has a distinctive carriage, suggests a different navigation of the space, and unlike the show's star, has always manifest an effortless sophistication, in every role. I will be curious to hear how it played. I was 8th row center and never ceased to see Chenoweth as Jackie rather than Jackie. I'm guessing that Scott disappears more readily and fully. Which likely helps the show's cohesion. But it's mere speculation. .

Okay, full disclosure on a few things: I hadn't seen the show before tonight, I have never seen the documentary (I'd never even heard of it!), and Sherie Rene Scott is in my top two favorite musical theatre performers of all time. I was totally ready to hate this show (I thought Redwood was a flaming pile of dog mess) but I wouldn't miss Sherie on Broadway for anything. With that being said...

I... actually kind of liked this show.

That is to say, I had a damn blast. It was a who's who of Broadway tonight, and boy, was there a palpable amount of love in the theatre. An usher commented to me that there were more famous people there tonight than on opening night. It was moving to see Brooke Shields (our president!) out supporting her dear friend.

When Sherie took the stage, you would have thought David Bowie was playing Madison Square Garden. The applause, cheers, and squeals were deafening and Sherie had to pause for at least a minute before the audience could compose itself. She is 58 years old, and my goodness. That woman has never looked better. And she sounds as good as she ever has, which is incredibly effing good.

The show took off and I was so thrilled to watch Sherie own that stage. This was musical theatre heaven. She is on stage for 90% of the show, and she makes it look totally effortless. She seemed so at ease on that stage, and she finally got to just belt a big, Broadway score for three hours. I was so excited for her to take on Pepa in Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown (one of my favorite films), and couldn't believe when I saw the show that Pepa, the clear lead in the classic Spanish film, had been totally written into the background. The supporting characters had all the good songs and moments and poor Sherie was left to clean up the mess in a very thankless role.

Here, she finally takes center stage in a true leading role on Broadway, something she has deserved for far too long. She is using every color in her glorious box of crayons. She belted her face off, she sang tender ballads, her undeniable vulnerability was juxtaposed against her trademark sarcasm and humor, and the audience was eating out of the palm of her hand. My god, that voice! She sounded pitch perfect and looked absolutely at ease, was in total control, and she impressed the hell out of me. The night flew by far too quickly.

I've read a lot about people thinking this show is tone-deaf and that it was the wrong time to bring it to Broadway. While I haven't seen Kristin, it feels easy to imagine exactly how she would play this role. Her "aren't I just adorable?" shtick just can't work here, and I plan to return to see her in the role so I can fairly make such a claim. Sherie has always been the girl who gets it in a totally different way, and that's probably why she's a (albeit niche) gay icon. She feels like someone who is always looking in from the outside. She has an irreverence and an incredibly ironic wit. Her portrayal felt like it was soaked in satire, and yet imbedded with total truth and honesty. She painted an incredibly complex portrait of a woman wrapped up in pain, ambition, and senselessness who at the same time simply wants to be loved, make a home with a family, and feel seen.

The score was uneven (please cut that foul cowboy western number!) but it was sung so beautifully by Sherie and the actress who played her daughter. The show isn't very good, probably, but I was so wrapped up in the fun that I didn't even care. The set was absolutely hideous until the true coup de thé·â·tre at the end, which is a real stunner. They spent money on that and it shows. Pretty ironic that the show is closing as such a massive flop.

If Sherie opened the show she'd be the current frontrunner for the Tony. Again, I can't say until I've seen both women in the role, but I strongly infer that if Sherie was a "star" like Chenoweth, she would have opened to very different reviews and very different word of mouth. It feels unjust that she only gets to do the role three times.

Her curtain call was one for the books.

Unfortunately, money is the only thing that matters on Broadway these days, and decisions based on that mindset still produced a big, fat flop.

Oh, the irony.

Thanks so much for that write-up, Totally. So glad Sherie got her moment.

And I’m right with you on the Nina White hype train — she was adorable in KIMBERLY AKIMBO.

Was there this evening after seeing the show in Boston and during previews and tonight truly felt like the best the show will ever be.

While I think Kristin plays Jackie as aspirational and overly sympathetic, not wanting the audience to dislike her, Sherie attacks the role with a level of bite and wit that paints in stark relief just how many questionable things this woman did for her own obsession with wealth and fame.

Sherie is, to put it in plain terms, an absolute star. She enters and the entire room shifts towards her specific, odd energy. She is so utterly herself and brings so much life to every role she plays, and this is not different. She has the charm to bring the audience in, and the edge to leave you questioning if you're meant to be rooting for her at all. She looks like a million bucks and moves with such ease and confidence, you would not have known it was her first performance in this massive role.

Vocally, there were a couple of missteps where she is clearly still trying to figure out how to place the notes, but they were few and far between. Otherwise, what an absolute treat to hear her voice on this score, there was an effortlessness to the way she sang it that made the whole show feel a little looser and more free.

She has such a specific sense of humor and you truly never know what she is going to say or do next, or how she's going to deliver even the most obvious punchline. She had a bit when she was crossing her legs early on that had me in stitches. And then her final scene/song was a true breakdown, and the final beat as the curtain drops where she returns to performing for her audience was chilling.

I wish I could see her when she goes on next week, but more than anything I hope someone in the audience tonight was inspired to get Sherie the leading principal role that she deserves. One of the best to ever do it.

I have nothing new to add other than that I concur with everyone that Sherie was indeed a revelation in the role and made us see Jackie in a way that Kristin could never.

I think if you want to see the way they probably wanted the show to be/sound like, go to a Sherie show on 12/3.

Sherie made the role shine brighter - and she tries to make better sense of the mess.

The show is still painful - and they didn't ever know what they intended it to be, that's clear - better performer / fit or not.

Can we please get Sherie in a good show like Death Becomes Her ?

Do we think there’s a chance that Sherie might get some additional days before closing?  Perhaps matinees?

I was supposed to see this last night, but had a terrible cold and couldn't go. I did get a ticket for next Wednesday night, though, and I can't wait to see what Sherie does with the role. These reports have me even more excited!

Do we think this will maybe be an easy rush/lottery for  her second performance? I’d like to see the show now based on all of your glowing reviews of this queen (I’ve never seen Sherie onstage!)
