''Think Cole Escola likely knocking off Denzel, Kieran, and Clooney for the Tony''
If the past Tony precedents mean anything, Kieran Culkin will be competing in Featured Actor for ''Glengarry Glen Ross,'' even though he's billed above the title. In 1986, Joe Mantegna won the Featured Actor Tony for the role of Richard Roma. In the 2005 revival, Liev Schreiber was above the title, but he competed in Featured Actor and also won for playing Roma.

Based on what? Not the critics’ reviews or the grosses, which have been great and higher than Sunset.
I’m here now at Gypsy and Audra is giving a wonderful performance in a wrong production of Gypsy
I would give it to Nicole
Audra will win because the Tonys adore Audra. Not saying Audra isn't great or isn't desrving, but the Tony voters worship her AND she's playing the diva role of all diva roles, breaking a half-century plus tradition of racial boundaries for this role in the process. No way she doesn't walk away with this.

Audra certainly has won more Tonys than any other performer, but she's also lost them, too. She's had a 60% win rate (10 noms, 6 wins- and she didn't even get nominated for her last outing with George C. Wolfe, Shuffle Along).

I can't believe this is even a question. Nicole for the win.

So, they...don't love her? This isn't a performance that makes history? Um...okay.

Isn't a 60% win rate, like, incredibly high and unusual? If she were just appearing in another musical, even getting raves the equivalent of what she's getting here, I could see her losing to Nicole. But these raves, this role, the cultural importance of the casting, all combined? In a year Trump regained the presidency?
The award is hers.
I could be wrong but I imagine the tony voters would be the kind of grumpy people who have seen all the roses and think her voice is miscast - the kind of early criticism that was on here during previews although now people seem to love it (I always thought the voice worked personally). Until we start getting those tony voter polls etc. and Ben Brantley, Jesse green et al. Start commenting I personally feel could see it going either way.
Id also like it to remain close because it makes the Tonys more interesting. It’s a bit boring year after year if everything is so predictable.

Loving her doesn't mean always rewarding her, which is what you seem to have been implying.
Frankly, I just think it's way too soon to be arguing definitively about who will win. It's the end of January.

This feels like a race that'll be a photo finish.
When GYPSY opened, most folks in the industry I know admired her but thought she was miscast. But it's hard to argue with those grosses, and they have a way of settling the matter.

Nicole gave one of the most memorable performances of a female lead I have ever seen. She is amazing- and I think she will be rewarded based on merit.
For the performances I have seen—Shen, Hilty/Simard, and Scherzinger—I can say that these women were firing on all cylinders when I watched them.
Unfortunately, McDonald’s vocals were lacking, especially in the big numbers, which pulled me out of the world of the musical.
If I were a voter, my vote would go to Shen.

The Gold Derby Tony prediction center is active, for those who participate.
Given it's early on, some of the odds are weirdly skewed - Andrea Martin at the top of Featured Actress for McNeal? The Hills of California at the top of Score?
